Only Essendon thought that.

Hope I am wrong but it looks like we have
- failed to secure a top 10 draft pick
- picked up a guy whose claim to fame is speed but hasn't played for two years because of chronic hamstrings
- now picked up a dud who takes speed, paid way too much for him and he has already trashed our reputation
- probably lost $m's in lost sponsorship revenue.

Yes it has been a memorable draft!

Don't understand the negativity here.

It may be one of our best trade periods. 2 top 10 picks, 14 pick, and a 20's or so pick at a discount.

Carlisle is top 10 in form - and it is good that the video came out whilst he was an Essendon player - the club would have been aware he had some issues, and now this has come out
before he comes to Saints the club and he are under no illusions - he has to toe the line and has something to prove, and the club will be right onto him. We needed a kpd and he fills that need, and
could be a star for years.

Freeman was a top 10, his hammies are apparently good now, pies certainly did not want to lose him, brings midfield pace.

Pick 14 - still plenty of potential guns.

Rice - a good maybe very good player for a good price.

Risks are always involved, but may well end up much better than using 5, 24 etc in draft.

Don't really understand how anyone can judge whether a trade period has been a good or bad one without any of the players actually playing a match for the club yet.

Drafting is a weight of numbers game so pick 14 really isn't worth much. You want to have a good draft, you need to take a pick inside 10 and multiple inside 30. At this point we may as well trade 14 away as well.

That's a good draft though. Surely its trading and drafting combined. We got a previous pick 10 for maybe a pick 30 and got a very good player for about a pick 9 after this points crap. Obviously we only get Rice and one other in the drafting period. And if we have a pick 9 its Ok but a pick 14 is not good. We may get the same player at pick 14 that we could have got at 9.

Is Freeman really part of this years trade when we used next years pick to get him?
Surely it cant count to how well we did this year. Or will we say next year how well we did because we also got Freeman

One way to look at it is have we improved our list?
Only time will tell but on face value the inclusion of Carlisle, Freeman, Rice and whoever we pick at 14, should be better than the four players we delisted.

I think we have done very well.
I wanted Carlisle in PSD but realistically was no chance.
If he is not suspended then by round 4 we will love him.
Freeman trade seems about right.
Quick mid and KPD what's the problem. Stop your whining

It would have been a very positive draft without the Carlisle saga - now I feel let down by the whole process!

For people think we did badly:

Have high picks does not guarantee you success.. if that's the case, Carlton, Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast and GWS would be top 4 every year.

Draft picks to be perfectly honest is a punt on potential. High picks just have higher percentage of making it, but still not guaranteed.
If there is a chance to get certainty over potential. You will pick certainty every time unless the potential is so high you couldn't ignore it.

Carlisle is a certainty.. a top young KP player for around pick 15 worth..... pick 5 + pick 24 - pick 14 (ok the video saga proves that he's immature, also says a lot of bombers and their environment)

Freeman is a top 10 talent if fit (this is a slight risk there, but we only paid a future round two, around pick 30 for him)

And rice could be a top 20 talent..

All in all.. a good trade period.. Yes, having lachie weller would have been better.. but not to be..

Cheer up everyone!!!
