Say Au Revoir to Pick 5
Ok. We are going to lose pick 5. Well, let me be more specific. We are going to deal away pick 5.
Now having said it, let me explain the logic.
I am not saying we are giving up pick 5 for Carlisle. That is not a good deal for the club. The club has said it isn't going to happen and I believe them.
But....it would make perfect sense to give up pick 5 for say picks 9 and 13. That's the rumour doing the rounds. The Crows have both those picks.
The Crows really want to recruit Aaron Francis who would most likely be available to them IF they had pick 5.
So we give Adelaide pick 5. They give us picks 9 and 13. We give 13 to the Bombers and get Carlisle and we still have a top 10 pick in the draft.
It would be a great win for the Saints if we can pull this off. I am sure they are trying to get Essendon to see it this way. Let's hope they succeed.
We can then use a second round pick for Freeman and we will have done a really good trading job.
Thoughts?

Re: Say Au Revoir to Pick 5
I would like Carlisle but we don't need him as there will be 2-3 years of free agency KPD players available for us before we enter our premiership window. I would like Francis at Seaford. I believe the above deal of 9 and 13 or something similar (maybe Gold coasts picks after there trades) will occur but I think we play hard ball as we should be prepared to not get Carlisle.
Question. If Carlisle wasn't available this trade period what would we do this trade period?
Would we go for three picks in the top 25 or so?
Keep the picks we have?
Whatever we would of done is fine by me. Play hardball with Carlisle as he is a loss we can afford

Re: Say Au Revoir to Pick 5
If we did this it would be amazing. But if you look at the points table then Adelaide will definitely want pick 24 as well.
If we can get Freeman for pick 42 - then it doesnt matter but that would mean kissing goodbye to Bailey Rice.
The alternative is we give the Pies next years 2nd rounder for Freeman.
That would mean
Pick 9 in draft, Carlisle, Freeman, Rice
Id be pleased with that. Every chance of getting a gun at 9.

Surely we'll lose it one way or another.jaxons wrote:We haven't lost pick 5 yet trust me.
Any chance of changing Aish's preference to come to us?
5 for 17 & Aish. Then 17 for Carlisle?

We are not that keen on Aish, prefer Mav's brother

Makes sense this one. Freo are desperate for McCarthy and will use pick 5 to get him.Old Mate wrote:I heard the same from a friend of the family.jaxons wrote:Old Mate wrote:Surely we'll lose it one way or another.jaxons wrote:We haven't lost pick 5 yet trust me.

Weller, Carlisle, Freeman, Rice, pick 60 on a smokie + Sinclair. Good result.

I would say we just keep pick 5 for the best (and earliest) available draft pick.
As ex-president Peter Summers said:

A lot was said by some that the high picks were not that important...the same are now rubbing their hands together figuring ways to spend our number 5.kosifantutti wrote:I don't think anyone ever said that but don't let the facts get in the way.Teflon wrote:Im torn......The Fireman wrote:so it would be safe to say that high picks are very valuable ?

Re: Say Au Revoir to Pick 5
As long as pick 5 guarantees us a champion in the making, then we hold on to it tightly, otherwise it would be nice to keep 5, but it could be pick 13 who becomes a future AFL legend..who knows..seems to be a lot of crystal balls being polished up out there. We need to get players ASAP who can get the club back in finals ASAP and get us a premiership ASAP, and I'm sure that is what's driving Richo.

Dear Tankers,
Had we properly tanked the whole season and won consecutive spoons we would have pick 1 and neither Freeman or Carlisle would want to come to the Saints.
Problem solved for you!

Well that also clearly isn't true. I said it doesn't guarantee anything and there is nothing happening yet to suggest it does. I also wanted to win as many games as possible knowing we didn't have the ability to win too many games. If you are going to say things like that which aren't true I may as well say you wanted us to lose every game after this topic came up later in the season. There is as much truth in that if not more.

Aaron Francis a Saint @ Pick 5 ?
Damienc just being devils' advocate for a sec. If the Crows really rate A.Francis and expect him to go @ #5 then St.Kilda may draft him on the day if he's still there with a pick 5.
I've heard he's not the midfield speedster the recruiters may be targeting but could be too good to go past with his other ratings.
Magnif the crows may not bother with chasing pick 5 in this scenario even if they do covet Francis.
Anyway Pick 5 could very conceivably & likely be worth much more than a pick 4 or 5 slots later.
Our pick 5 will continue to draw increasing interest I would suggest. Carlisle may be disappointed by his former club not willing to budge on their demands for a 1st. rd. pick to back up their already banked Pick 4.
Carlisle could be forced into the psd, have to say he'll be taken care of there anyway - both blues & Saints interested.
The dissappointment of clubs with compensation picks continues with the Lions expressing their irritation over what Leuenberger might draw this morning. Even essendon may have to join the disgruntled soon.

Re: Say Au Revoir to Pick 5
From what I hear Saints first draft target will last to pick 9.
#5 may get us 9 & 13 or 8 & 16.
#16 should get Carlisle (who chose Saints over Carlton partly because of our 2015 performance) 24 will get Freeman ( chose Saints over Collingwood) 42 gets Rice ( chose us over Carlton).
Three players chose us as a destination club.
Would not have happened if the non thinking Tankers got there way.
Thank god our club isn't as narrow minded and doesn't subscribe to a loser culture.

Exactly. Also I don't think Seaford seems to be an issue either. Maybe our real issue before this year is players thought we were a crap side but this year gave them hope that we are on the way up.
