2000: Matthew Carr, Sam Cranage, Joe McLaren, David Sierakowski, Steven Sziller, Darryl Wakelin, Shane Wakelin
1999:
1998: Matthew Lappin, Nicky Winmar
1997: Jamie Shanahan, Joel Smith

How many of them did good at the new club?

Thought this was worth a closer look.
Shanahan was a solid player for Melbourne and pbly would have been really handy for us
Smith was decent for Hawthorn but was never the player he was pre-Injury

Lappin was a decent player for Carlton but fell away badly as they slid... Winmar well, he had a filler year with the dogs didn't he

Sammy Cranage and McLaren didn't amount to anything post us
Sierakowski pbly would have been a better had he stayed with us (very underrated here) but still was not on the park compared to Gehrig
Sziller was solid without being spectacular
The Wakelins both went on to have decent careers... We gave up Darryl for Hamil which was a decent return but clearly we screwed up bad letting Shane go.
Losing Matty Carr was a mistake. He wanted to go home IIRC and Callaghan was a decent get pre-injury but we lost out bad overall

Begley, Ackland and Knobel were no big losses

Everite was decent but never reached the heights he once did...

Guerra turned out pretty decent after he reformed so that was a bit of a loss

Clarke left us to get injured again... Ball and Maguire were pretty solid for players we let go for nothing

Patterson, Heyne, McQualter all stayed on the list longer then they should have

Hutchins... Well we quickly disregarded whatever the recruiters saw in him at our own peril

Walsh was unlucky with injury but wouldn't have made it anyway

Lynch has done well after we starved him of opportunity

Dawson was a bad loss for nothing and has been serviceable for Freo

Cripps is highly contentious but personally i think is a bit overrated

Goddard, Dal, and McEvoy in my opinion aren't playing much better than they were with us and when you weigh up what we got for them... I think we've ok

Gwilt was finished before he left...

Jury is out on Stanley but round 1 goes to to Hugh Goddard

All things considered... I think our record stacks up pretty well over time.

We've been compensated pretty well for the majority of talent that we lost including Lynch and Cripps

The only ones that have really hurt us is those we threw away for nothing... Wakelin, Ball, Guerra, Dawson, Maguire

Referring to his cousin as his brother ( Carlton's Patrick Cripps) his brother Ashley plays Perth amatures

Joel Smith was outstanding at Hawthorn in 2001-2003 across HB

Top 3 in the B&F and perhaps AA

Played around 150 at the Hawks

Fair call... I guess the memories dulling a little around that era.

IIRC Hawthorn were quite average around that time?

I guess you can add that to the list of players we gave away for free that did quite well

It seems that we judge the players we trade away better than those we flick

You left out Barry Hall who also didn't end up doing too bad either.

Also Jayson Daniels didn't do too bad for Sydney before returning back to us

True but we got Nick Dal Santo out of that deal + two other players so I think we came out on top.

And IIRC he quit. We wanted to keep him

Sadly we are a club with a history of stupid decisions and weak leadership, and I suggest right up to the sacking of Watters which smacked again of weak leadership at the top. I just hope Richo at least has the strength to stamp himself on decision making

I think Watters was a no brainer.

In more ways than one.

The issue is a lot more complex than us writing off people. Taylor Duryea was a pick 69. Now he looks like a pick 5.
The Hawks are better at talent identification AND creating a culture of excellence. This is why I find things like a 'no dickheads' policy moronic. Remember that was supposedly a Sydney idea, never a Hawks one. The Hawks dont cast judgments on 18yos. Remember they drafted Dayle Garlett and people bagged them? Remember when Caro lost her rag over Luke Hodge having a few beers? Who is laughing now? The do gooders? No. Alan Jeans said 'choir boys dont win premierships'. This is why I am very very suspicious of this crap about recruiting 'character'' the Saints have been pushing out recently. Who is to judge an 18yo by their character? This is garbage. The Hawks back themselves to SHAPE character, not draft it. BIG difference. Ok Dayle was too far gone and they couldnt save him but how many have they shaped and saved overall? Id say HUNDREDS.

I have no idea if appointing SW smacked on weak leadership but from what we have heard since and the fact no one has gone near SW since he has gone you would suggest it was very strong leadership to get rid of him. maybe some other clubs would have said he has a contract so we will keep him one more year but we were strong knowing what he was doing to our great club and apart from Dermie the media were pretty positive of the move because they also knew what was going on inside the club.
