Wasn't he at Sandy for over half the season, behind a 22yo who was averaging 8ppg.
I watched a lot of those games, he was played as a second ruck at Sandy, behind an American... Coming off the bench before he was eventually tried as a fwd... Not sure he played many good ones in the VFL
No Hickey was not "behind" Holmes.
The club was trying to improve Hickey as a key forward (as we assume they want him to be a ruck forward) and to teach Holmes how to be a ruck as with Holmes it is a ruck or nothing.
Where players play at Sandi is about their development and not on a ranking system, or even what is best for Sandi.
Personally I would have been giving Hickey some games as No 1 Ruck to see how he went., both at Sandi and in the StKilda.
Flying the World in comfort thanks to FF Points....
Are you suggesting SR the coach was wrong to not play Hickey?? I think AR knows which of the two are most valuable.
These two (actually 4) would battle it out at training every week. Longer is clearly a better ruck contest and stoppage player.
Just because people want Hickey to be a good player doesn't make him a good player. Statistically he is just not effective enough as a ruckman
And
He did not play fwd at Sandy in the first 6 rounds
Mitch Brown, McCartin, Pierce, White and Membrey did
Played forward and Hickey and Holmes rotated off the pine.
When Hickey was moved fwd
Pierce and Holmes rucked and Brown went Wing/back
Hickey is not worth a top 20 pick.
If we get that, take it and run for the hills

I didn't think Stanley was worth what we got but when you're s club in desperate need of a mobile ruck (Dogs), it's amazing what'll be given up....

Does this mean the band is officially back together?
Richmond rule out Bennell !!!
Makes you wonder what transpired there him choco and Dusty hanging out then Richmond pull the pin ... Maybe they used Dusty to test him and he failed ???
Looks like Freo will get him for a pack of twisties now.... I still reckon he is worth the risk

We got pick 13 as compensation for Brendon Goddard
We gave up pick 13 for Hickey but improved pick 37 to 25 (Spencer White) and pick 57 to pick 47 (Trent Dennis Lane)
Both White and Trent Lane proved to be duds so we are left with Hickey for picks 13, 37 & 57.
Hickey needs to be worth a top 10 pick or we stuffed up yet again.
We also gave up pick 12 for Tom Lee plus pick 24 (Nathan Wright) and pick 43 (Josh Saunders)
That means becomes pick 12 for Tom Lee, Nathan Wright & Josh Saunders

When we win our next premiership our midfielders will look up and see McCartin leading from the goal square a la Tony Lockett AND a 2 metre Giant moving into the goal square.
If McCartin gets free they will pass to McCartin who will convert a la Tony Lockett, OR otherwise they will go to the Giant in the goal square.
That Giant will also be our relief ruckman.
I reckon we need that to be Hickey or someone of similar size who can pluck the ball out of the air and kick it accurately between the big sticks.

Yeah so that means we stuffed up.
"Now the ball is loose, it gives St. Kilda a rough chance. Black. Good handpass. Voss. Schwarze now, the defender, can run and from a long way".....
Hickey is contracted and the club is happy to keep him
but....
two or three clubs have been sniffing about and if we get the right deal AND if Hickey wants to move, a deal may be done where we receive a late first rounder.
This is the most report scenario where we get Carlisle and keep #5. We use the Hickey dp on Carlisle.
So in the wasup we get
Carlisle
Freeman
#5
#23
Rice - for late dp
Sinclair - upgrade late dp
Maybe Young for 3rd rounder
Lose
Hickey.
If this was the wash up would anybody really be critical?
bigred wrote:just reading on twitter about how our first rounder NEXT year may come into play for Carlisle.
Richo hinted at this in an interview recently. I suppose we expect to do better next year and it won't be such a good pick. Or maybe we get something back rather than a straight swap.
The 3 for 1 trades look bad in hindsight but at the time we had a terribly imbalanced list and salary cap issues.
If you feel like a laugh of to the real footy website and read the trade article by Matt Murnane.
He should give up sports journalism as he is a muppet.
Saying if not Billings then who do we trade for. Freeman, yes we would consider giving up the number 3 pick in the draft for the number 10 who has not managed to play.
Muppet.

So he did do some pre season
Ross, Murdoch, McKenzie, Ray, Siposs, Markworth
Had no pre season
He missed the preseason and was in Germany getting calf semen or something stuck into his knee. I saw him at the jumper presentation and he was just starting the running and they had him on a modified program. If he did a practice match it would have been to build up match fitness because he was def not fully fit.

Yes, I would be. Hickey could become a Peter Everitt type ruck-cum-forward. Players like that are very important if you ever want to win a GF. I want us to keep Billy Longer too.
