I just hope after 2035 when the MCG contract ends that the Grand Final will always be played at the MCG
There are no other stadiums as big - you can't count Mike Fitzpatrick Stadium in Sydney as it's a dump.
One thing I love about being an MCC member is having the ability to go the granny every year. I also love the whinging from others that aren't members about our right!

We have been to Waverley twice. First was Ansett Cup in 1996 against Carlton...We flogged them. Unfortunately a lot of people went on the ground and buggered up the presentation. There were fireworks and a big Ansett plane on the oval (not a real one) lol. Stephen Kernahan was soundly beaten that night The second time we went ..not sure of the year we beat Haws by 8 points. J Dunstall nearly won it off his own boot in the second half. I liked Waverley but i never went there mid-winter.
I lived fairly close to VFL Park when I was younger and have some great memories of it. I remember listening to the KISS concert from home, watching the fire works each year for the night grand final, watching the Saints train when it was our home ground, fishing in the dam in the car park and watching the Waverley Reds play baseball there.
Got my first real job there selling pies, got promoted to the bays selling chips & drinks then hit the jackpot and got a job selling Records - made a killing on 4 hours work with an all access pass to ground.
Good memories but jeez it was cold.
We drove two hours each way to Waverley (not including traffic time) every weekend for most of the 90s. It was a terrible ground. Freezing, poor view from most of the place, impossible to get to and from.
My fondest memories of it are 97 of course, though I don't remember a huge number of cracking games, mostly comfortable wins.

I also got my first job there selling records, and after 3/4 time, we replaced the record cap with a herald cap and sold the herald as the crowd were leaving. You're right, from memory it was very good money, especially finals time. Would've been early 70s.
I didn't mind Waverley. Only problem was that you felt too far from the action on the second level. Imagine if they'd built the third level? You would have needed a telescope to see what was happening on the other side of the ground.

Loved Waverley being a local...still have a kick there from time to time...
96 Ansett Cup...sad I still have it on VHS...TRIANIDIS!!! Worse was the next week in round one we had a big crowd for night granny and no one turned up for round one...lost anyways against North if memory serves me correct...I remember going up to cheer early and the loud roar from the previous week was gone...
There's a nice short little doco on Waverley on YouTube...Some guy snuck in and walked around...they left it vacant for a while and young hoodlums broke in and trashed the coaches boxes, TV areas and rooms etc.
loved Waverley ..took all day to get there and home (forget public transport)...froze my arse off..if you sat at the fence you couldn't see the other side of the grd. You could get stuck in the carpark and watch your superannuation mature, miserable structure...apart from that what a ripper of a place.
After the game we always went up to the Social Club for the raffle and player of the week.
Not only was it an entertaining hour but by the time we left the queue to exit had "almost" disappeared!

The trick with the carpark was to park not far away from the freeway exit. You had to walk 5 minutes to/from your car but it made for a quick exit at freeway speed

That and noting the number on the nearest pole. One friend parked out there once and forgot to note the number. He had to wait till most of the cars had left before he could find his. Of course, initially there were no numbered poles and there were plenty of people wandering around trying to find their cars after the match.
It was a great concept, especially when the AFL had for many years come up against a brick wall with the MCC. The move to Waverley no doubt provided bargaining power when John Cain eventually made the right call. Had the Bolte government actually made good on their promise to build a rail line to Rowville (the Libs seem to bring out this promise every few years only to conveniently forget about it if elected), then who knows what might have happened.

I must apologise, but I firmly believe that the members of the competing teams should be given priority for the Grand Final, all of them. It is a disgrace that only a piddly 30 or 40% of tickets go to the competing members. It means die hard supporters don't get the opportunity to go and that diminishes the atmosphere of the Grand Final. I think it should be a case of bad luck for MCC & AFL members and particularly the Corporates and other hangers on. The Grand Final means the most to the teams' supporters.

Saw David Bowie there towards the end of 1983. Wikipedia says November 12.
Stage was set facing the Kenneth Luke Stand, so the audio bounced back off the stand
creating an interesting reverb effect. David tried his hardest but it's hard to get the
crowd going when it's a chilly Melbourne evening, the dew is descending, and the sound
is muddy. Would have preferred Brett Bowey.
