In support of these Carlisle rumours:
• Money gets him to the stable and rapidly improving Saints.
• Boyhood support of the team gets him to the very impressive Bulldogs.
What the hell gets him to Carlton???

But maybe Carlton's had another whip around and found even more money to chuck at him. And maybe that's enough to top our "untoppable" offer. And maybe that's enough to sway him to join a team that is currently a rabble.
And if that's the case then maybe I really don't want him, despite the obvious benefits he could bring to the Saints.

Pick #5 MID or Structural K.P.D. ?
Con I tend to agree with your take on where the Saints should focus on most,
the priority needs to be:
1. Clearance players
2. Midfielders who can kick and give our fwds a chance.
This approach implies we hold firm on Pick 5 and give ourselves a chance of adding some more silk to our midfield.
Yes Carlisle would be nice to have down back with Hughie (post Dempster & Fish)but closing the door on who may walk through it to play in the red, black & white fills me with dread.
I have some confidence that the recruiters will get it right @ #5.
If it was a midfielder coming in I believe it would improve the odds for the Freeman strategy succeeding' meaning you would conservatively expect that one of them (Freeman or a Pick 5 MID) would 'make it' & genuinely improve our midfield. Maybe this is a gambling approach in some ways but Carlisle @ $3. Million may also make great sense in terms of adding skill and structure.
What a conundrum

A generous offer from a big Melb club with the expectation of playing in front of bigger crowds.Dr Spaceman wrote:Everything is a rumour at this stage. But rumours need some sort of basis, some justification.stjay wrote:Rumour is: Carlisle to Carlton 5yr deal $600k p.a

But if a generous offer from a big (unstable & bottoming out) Melb club with the expectation of playing in front of bigger crowds (if they ever get their act together) is enough to sway him from a generous offer from a (not quite as) big (but stable & on the way up) Melb club with the expectation of playing in front of bigger crowds (as they rise up the ladder), then like I said elsewhere, I don't really care if we get him or not
Re: 2015 - Draft & Trade Thread
I'm a little jack of the whole situation myself and feel as though we've been used as leverage but despite being in the cellar Carlscum average attendance was over 50% higher than ours this season.Dr Spaceman wrote:Yep, well that's obviously the theory behind that rumour then.stjay wrote:A generous offer from a big Melb club with the expectation of playing in front of bigger crowds.Dr Spaceman wrote:Everything is a rumour at this stage. That may be a little different next year, ours may go up and theirs may go down, but it is still a huge difference.

I really dont think Carlisle is looking at attendance figures
I think he 'may' want the status attached to a so called 'bigger club' and if thats the case Im with Dr - he aint our man
Im starting to think he aint our man if pick 5 is at all entertained anyway as he really hasnt done a whole lot yet over a longer period.
Lets be honest - he's no Zac Dawson (ok im kidding..)
Put up or shut up jake ought to be the mantra.

Re: 2015 - Draft & Trade Thread
Unfortunately we have won 1 flag in a 150 years. No matter how promising we look that is a fact. We have a low membership base, low attendances and a habit of self destructing. This is how the football world sees us. It's fantastic to see how the club is being run atm from our perspective, but the public are just waiting for us to fall over again. It's what we do, according to non Saints. We lack respect.
Don't be surprised players may want to play for a big time Melbourne club like Carlton. They have history behind them, regardless of how shyte they currently are. It's just how it is. We are on the right track, but we have been on the right track before.
Maybe getting a big name over the line this off season will get players thinking about us as an exciting destination.

Have to agree with you and the good doctor, Teflon. Don't get me wrong, I think we need someone of his size and ability. Two years ago I was asked by a bombers' supporter who I would pick from Essendon's list if I could have anyone and I asked him the same question about the saints. Predictably, he picked Roo and I picked Carlisle. At that time I thought Jake was going to be elite. To say he's been disappointing since would be an understatement. If he and his manager are playing games with us to gain some leverage in contract negotiations, then I'd be hesitant to spend too much on him. If he doesn't really want to come to the saints, especially given the rumoured amounts we are said to have offered, then maybe we'd be better off pursuing someone who does.Teflon wrote:I really dont think Carlisle is looking at attendance figures

I still like the idea of moving on from Carlisle.
Sending Freo our pick 5 and getting Weller + pick 16 in return. Then use 16 on a kid and 23 on Freeman.

Re: 2015 - Draft & Trade Thread
Wonder if any of the club's insiders have any knowledge as to whether the club has any real interest in trading for Lachie Weller?
Either this year or at the end of next year?
We know the fans are keen; but is the club?

Carlisle’s destination still uncertain
Essendon key position player Jake Carlisle is yet to nominate a preferred club after requesting to be traded out of the Bombers, but St Kilda is leading the charge for his services.
“No movement at the moment, he’s still away,” said SEN draft expert Brett Anderson.
“My understanding is that St Kilda is still in the box seat and that their terms and offer is the best on the table that he is looking for at the moment.
“There’s a bit of talk about the Bulldogs being in the mix over the weekend, but I can’t see how that works – Carlton is the other side.”

Carlton Cant really be going for Carlisle can they?
CARLTON recruiting chief Stephen Silvagni is preparing a raid on up to four opportunity-starved Greater Western Sydney players.
The Blues have strong interest in exciting wingman Liam Sumner (No.10 draft pick), defender Lachie Plowman (No.3), goalsneak Jed Lamb (No.21) and former rookie-listed ruckman Andrew Phillips.
The mooted deal could be a four-for-one swap, with the Giants handing over a group of players in return for a late first-round or second-round draft pick from Carlton.
etc etc etc
The departures of Chris Yarran (Richmond) and Lachie Henderson (Geelong) could also net the Blues’ second-round picks, which could be passed on to the Giants in exchange for their quartet.
