Got to be honest, i didn't look at a lot of the game - more background noise at times. i can't get enthused playing the eagles in Perth because i know we, like most other sides, will get screwed by biased umpiring. It's too frustrating because the afl is aware of it, the statistics are way beyond chance, and it's continuing to happen. the only comment they've made is that the umpires call what they see. in the case of wa umps this is patently false - they call based on their own bias - as proven by the wa umpires ratio of free kicks to perth teams as opposed to interstate teams, this includes when umpiring wa teams in melbourne. i don't doubt it is an unconscious bias, but the effect is the same. add to this the crowd pressure and the advantage is cruelling. simply do not allow them to umpire wa teams. and on top of it admit there is a problem and make umpires aware that the afl are concerned about a team dominating free kick ratios beyond mere chance over such an extended period of time and coaching and personnel - in other words make them aware that they must not be unduly influenced by the crowd and their own perceptions of teams. heck, employ psychologists to make them more resilient - at least appear to do something and put the seed into their heads!

What can we do since the afl basically greenlighted screwing us i don't know. The AFL is a rare sport where coaches and commentators do not publicly lambast poor umpiring. if it's poor let the teams complain, and let the media raise it. instead the whole thing is covered up by the industry. umps are protected far more than they should be - why aren't they as accountable as any player or coach? it's seriously had me rethinking my emotional involvement with the game. so instead i try to avoid games where i know it will happen. unfortunately it happens in too many other games as well. in umpires mind we are an unfavoured son.

Sainter_Dad wrote:You are all wrong about the umpiring - Derek Humphrey Smith says the review of the game indicated that the WCE only got three unwarranted frees and St Kilda got one - and that a review of all the game indicated, that even with hindsight and plenty of time, the free kick count should have been 22 - 7. So that means that WCE got 3 that they should not have and missed 2 - we got one that we should not have got and missed out on 2 for the entire game.

This is not under the pressure of the game - this is in the cold hard light of day!

81 tackles - almost all of them - WCE disposed of the ball correctly - according to the umpires advisory committee.

Get used to it - NOTHING IS GOING TO CHANGE - If you play for St Kilda, or support them - go and buy shares in Vaseline!!!!
I have to disagree with this, this is not Humphrey Smith's assessment, he is only quoting the umpires department's assessment of their own performance, fair dinkum umpires assessing themselves, of course they are not going to come out and say we got 30 decisions wrong or we missed 25 frees, it's not the AFLs way to admit mistakes. It's like the old what's your decision, you would get the most blatant incorrect decision and somehow the umpires department would come up with some convoluted reason why the umpire was at least not wrong. My highlight, or should that be lowlight from the other night was in the second quarter, Naitanui grabbed the ball, ran 5 metres, was tackled correctly, he just dropped the ball to the ground, the call was play on, but because we had a forward press on the Eagles swept the ball from our 50m zone down to their 50 where they kicked an easy goal.

Apples - I said it was Humpty reporting on the Umpires review - Basically - the umpires reviewed the game - and said even if we had got them all right - and seen every angle - most of the decisions would still stand - including the non decisions - hence the suggestion that we all buy Vaseline shares.

Yes Sainter Dad, poor wording on my part, I was agreeing with you, I guess my point was not only piss poor umpiring but it was completely biased, I would have to go back to Victoria Park 1970 vrs Fagpies, Don Jolley, to witness a more one sided biased crap umpired game.

I used to quite like watching WC now find I hate them as the umpiring is so bias all the time - pointless any side playing them at home - afl needs to sort it out ---- on a side note seems Hawkes needed in the finals ??? They had 10 to 2 in the first qtr last night and gifted their first 2 goals to keep them in the match --- hope fully we get some love from the umps in the next few years - because IMO the umps are having a massive impact on results

As a neutral watching this game I have found the umpiring bizarre.

It is almost inconveivable that the umpires can be so badly biased without something else happening.

Really the AFL need to check bank accounts. It happen for WCE all too often to be a co-incidence

At best you might conclude the shocking display by the umps tonight has been because they were totally and utterly intimidated by the crowd factor.

At worst they have been briefed to suit the AFL agenda of getting an interstate premier.

Dean Margetts should do well in the Eagles B&F.

The problem with that is Freo got duded last night and a poster has already said the Hawks were gifted frees.

It is quite clear that against the bottom sides they get a clear advantage at home. When there are only an average of 34 total free kicks given (WCE v bottom 10) and they are receiving nearly 2/3 of them, I call that unfair
Note also that the average number of free kicks for the year is 18
The Eagles received above that number 13 times (frees for) and below a massive 15 times (frees against)

When they play away they run at pretty much 50/50
Get gifted games and goals because the umpires are obviously biased at their home.

It is really appalling and absolutely corrupts the integrity of the game.

North were completely shafted tonight.

Margetts should never umpire again

Razor Ray was dumped because he was so biased they could't use him. Now he gets finals. Stupid game these days. Not much appeal to me if we don't play and I only follow this sport out of tradition now, its putrid and lacks integrity.

Frees 24 18. Didnt effect the result but i have never seen the Eagles lose a free count, even when they were down the bottom.

I stopped watching the game after the 'shepherding' free kick against Goldstein in the marking contest.
Given by the non-officiating umpire some 30-40 meters behind the contest.
I find it amazing that their eyesight is so good they can see imaginary infringements from that distance but not see blatant infringements in front of their faces.

Do I think they are cheats?
No, I just think they get 'sucked in' by the crowd over there.
BUT, that doesn't explain why the equally feral and loud Dockers crowd doesn't seem to be able to influence the umpires in a similar manner.

Maybe not. I certainly wont be going on and on about things now. 2 maybe 3 posts to say my point and then I'm out of it. Well hopefully for everyone I keep to that promise. And I get rid of that ridicules post count.

Margetts is a clear cheat and last night he didn't let his side down. Interesting his sister works for West Coast.

Stevic is a Hawkes fan and has got them up in three prelim finals in a row.
