Suns to look for mature recruits, says Eade
This interested me especially with Bennell on the table. Who do we have in the 22-27 year old bracket we can trade to them for HB? Pick 5-7 and a mature player will get it done. Would they take just pick 5?

This comment adds another element to the trade but the only player that they would have half an interest in would be Gilbert or Roberton and pick 5.
After last night game we serious lack class on the outside. We should really try and get him IMO.

Re: Suns to look for mature recruits, says Eade
Well Id really really really love to have the GCs pick 3.
Would Armo + pick 5 for pick 3 and Bennell get it done?
Then we could go after Callum Mills. Pick 3 would get us Mills. The Swans could not match that. So wed end up with Mills and Bennell and still keep our pick in the 20s. Ill spew if the Swans end up with both Mills and Heeney.
Mills is going to be an absolute gun. Bookmark it. This is what we need to do get serious in talent in the door. With Mills, Bennell, McCartin, Goddard and Billings running around for the next 10 years. Oh boy oh boy. Youd need to be in a seatbelt 24/7.
It would also mean backing Seb Ross to step up as our number one clearance man. Personally I think he can do it. Seb is actually ahead of Armo at the same age across the board, and including the all important clearances.

If you swap Steven with Armo then I'm sold. Steven undoes all his good work by turning it over. Worse than CJ.

Would GC go for it? I personally think Armo is at his peak right now. Its now or never. To get a pick 3 (Mills) in exchange for a 27yo would be a big win for us.ROLS-LEE wrote:Con Gorozidis wrote:Well Id really really really love to have the GCs pick 3.

I also reckon Seb Ross can fill Armos shoes and become our number 1 clearance player:
See their same-age stats for yourself:

People are going to cry and say dont get rid of your good players - but i just dont believe we are going to be any good unless we are more aggressive. I know the media is being very kind to us and talking us up - but in reality we still rely on Dempster, Roo and Joey too much for my liking. We need some serious A grade kids in the door. Armo wont be around next time we are contending anyway. No way are we going to be contending in 2018. I think rather than being scared of doing a Melbourne - we need to look towards the Pies rebuild. They have been brave. Getting rid of Thomas, Dawes, Lumumba and Shaw were master strokes. Rather than fearing failure - we need to be bold and dare to succeed. And to do that we need A grade talent. Ending up with Pick 7 or 8 this year after all the AFL horse trading, concessions etc is not going to get us there.
Re: Suns to look for mature recruits, says Eade
The majority of their list will be 22-27 next year, including: O'Meara, Swallow, Lynch, Prestia, Bennell, Day, Hallahan, Tape, Gorringe, McKenzie, Matera, Nicholls, Shaw, Russell, May, Thompson, Hall, Dixon, Smith.
Not sure they need more in that bracket if they're comfortable with who they have. So the only way I can interpret that statement is that they're not comfortable. He thinks the current guys aren't going to get it done and a bunch of them are going to go out to get new blood in. Bennell might head that list but maybe a few others could presumably be moved as well.
But as the OP says, we've got no-one to trade. Armo and Geary are surely too old for them. The only possible currency in the 22-27 bracket could be Steven, Bruce, Roberton, Newnes, Webster, maybe Savage or Hickey. Not sure we want to give away any of them for a price GC would be willing to pay.
Steven is the obvious one. He'll probably be the reigning B&F winner so he'd have to cost a good player and a good pick. Bennell+23 for Steven feels too low. Bennell+4 for Steven+24? We'd have to take that (assuming Bennell is solid) because a good young player + two top ten picks is a very strong platform to build from.
But it won't happen.

Re: Suns to look for mature recruits, says Eade
Con Not sure that Collingwood were any braver than we already have been. We let go Goddard, Dal, Ben & Rhys. That easily matches who they traded out.
We effectively cashed in most our chips before they did, in fact Ill suggest we were the forerunners in some pretty brave recruiting, they simply followed the lead.
Sadly they have more chips at their Casino , while were pretty well cashed out , and looking at their result this year and allowing for their better list before recruiting, I'm not sure they are anything super special. Again they will get a pick just behind us so it's not that easy.
Our recruiting department has been nothing short of outstanding lately, also made some very brave decisions. I'll back them in to get it right again

Silly comment. Actually ridicules comment. Anyway on topic we wouldn't get an upgrade for getting rid of a 29 year old for a 22 year old with huge upside.

Pick 3 is worth 2234 draft points and with a 25% discount becomes 1676 they have to find.
Going off their current picks:
Pick 14 = 1161
Pick 32 = 584
Pick 50 = 273
Pick 68 = 59
As you can see their 1st and 2nd pick almost gets the job done. They'll get Mills even if a team bid on him at pick 1 (won't happen).

Don't trade Armo, he has 4 years of good footy in him and he is heart and soul a Sainter and probably our B&F....finally has stepped up to the A grade level and we're thinking of moving him on?
No way.

Re: Suns to look for mature recruits, says Eade
Steven does turn the ball over but he is a lot more of an asset than Armo. Armo is an inside beast but he is just a player on the outside. Jacks acceleration is what makes him unique and with out him we would be a seriously worse side. His run gets us going a lot of the time. Fyfe and Dangerfield turn the ball over too but they have team mates who can pressure the ball when it does go awry. In short I think Armo is more dispensable. I would do something like Gilbert and our first pick for Bennell. I wouldn't be keen to trade out one of our key players.ROLS-LEE wrote:Con Gorozidis wrote:Well Id really really really love to have the GCs pick 3.

Re: Suns to look for mature recruits, says Eade
Lets put it this way. GWS just had a season with 11 wins. 70% more wins than us. They have a younger side than us. Ave 2015 Age 23.6 v 24.4. Yet they will still pull much better talent from this years draft. Hopper is top 5 talent and Kennedy is top 10 talent. At this stage it seems they havent lost anyone. There is talk they will lose Treloar, but if they do they will get a lot in return.
How do people see us catching up to GWS? I'll state it again.
1. They are already better than us.
2. They are about to get better draft talent than us (Hopper, Kennedy)
3. We still have Riewoldt, Dempster, Montagna, Fisher in our best 22. All at the end of their careers.
I just dont think we can tread water thinking things will just work out and fall into place they wont. We need to be aggressive and we need A grade young talent. We are not going to get it with this years draft picks (unless we fluke it). So either we get it now somehow or we then have to finish bottom again next year. That is the choice we face imo. I think the reality for us is not as rosy as the media is making out. They have a vested interest in talking up the game and the lower clubs. They need to keep people watching. But we should look at facts, not what 'Darce' says.

The SWans will have Heeney and Mills. The GWS Hopper + all their other guns.

Its funny that the media don't talk up Carlton or Brisbane. We are being talked up because we had a much better year than expected and not because the media feel they have to. And what you are suggesting doesn't improve the list by much anyway. There is no point in losing our best or second best player. That will not improve the side. We should have done that when we were up the top but its no good doing that down the bottom.

And the media were talking up Brisbane big time in 2014.
Carlton clearly have the worst list in the AFL. Hard to argue that one.
Doesnt change my point - we still need more young A grade talent and it is very very difficult to get it with the current system.
Things wont just tall into place for us. But it really is very challenging.

Yep so they did that because they feel obligated too. I don't think so otherwise why all the negative crap in the media this year. Anyway forget that stuff and tell us your plan to improve. We have no choice but to do what we are doing. There is no quick fix. It will take us longer than GWS. They are at a different stage anyway.

3 years ago, the GCS were going to win the flag next year. 2016 onwards was their 10 year dominance with GWS apparently.
Now Eade is looking to top up with mature ager's in a side that finished bottom 4.
They are stuffed.
They will not become the dominant force all the 'experts' agreed upon, and they may well be the new Bears from the early 90's once Gary gives it away. A culture less club in a cesspool of a city.
We need to make sure we pick the eyes out of their list, starting this off season with Bennell.
Now for GWS to hit a hurdle and join their franchise mates at the bottom of the ladder. It can certainly still happen, irrespective of how much of a leg up they're given.
