Postitives and Negatives v Cats

positives: all our older players who played today worth another year, players with a few years under the belt like Savage, Webster, Newnes, Steven all improving, recent signings like Bruce, Goddard, Membrey, Hickey, Weller all showing great promise and the game plan keeps us in most games. And the coach seems to be the man.

Negatives: kicking

Positive: a team that has beaten us by near or over 100 points the last 2 years and with plenty to play for...and we drew with probably our weakest team on paper running out on the paddock. That says to me, that despite plenty of lumping players into the 'not afl standard', we have actually developed some nice solid 'afl standard' depth, and there is plenty to look forward to.
Negative: we didn't pull the win off and give those cocky cats that have been dissing us ever since we fell off the pace the finger...next year I hope!!

Newnes is surprising me, his disposal has improved markedly.
Just goes to show how valuable that 50 - 100 game mark is.

I like Jimmy a lot, he is the perfect modern mid size defender.

positives - forward line worked better with Roo on the wing. Bruce , Hickey , Membery seemed to have more space to work
- crowd - supporters got very noisy can only be a +ve
- Seb Ross seemed to more in the game in a tagging role on Selwood
- Websters short kicking
-Savages run - missed him


Negatives - set shots on goal of course
- Saunders Shents failed to make uch of an impact. Jury out on Brodie Murdoch - subs role sucks

I checked the stats, Duck Selwood got 21 touches at 58% efficiency
Ross got 22 at nearly 80% or so? So he beat Selwood and nullified his impact.
The funny thing is, he got a lot of uncontested possies, did he get them when we had possession, and he made great position to receive? If so, that's excellent.
I don't know about Dunstan, I can't really remember his input to be honest. Some are saying he's slow, others saying he's a tough inside mid.
There was one play where he got free within range of goals, but went onto his right foot? Or did I get that wrong?

So many things to love!

I just wanted to mention that last kick by Murdoch was a beauty! With only seconds left, the penetration caught Geelong off guard enabling a spillage that almost won us the game. Murdoch could have gone for the chip it to someone safer but instead used his strength (long penetrating kicking) and gave us an opportunity to get a score.

I would like to see him get a full game next week and maybe bring in Markworth (to plat a half) for Saunders to see if he has a chance to make it.

So much emerging talent! makes list management exciting and difficult.

Main positives for me:

Savage really has stepped up and can become an A grader, his tackling and defence is now up with his attacking assets, 55m kicks off one step
Hickey - clunking marks and kicking goals
Goddard - rising star this week ???
Weller- just tough, consistently hard at the vall and has been all year--- loves the Saints - you can just tell.

But has bizarre brain fades. I know the players are encouraged to take risks but some of things he does are just plain suicidal and inevitably lead to turn-overs. You sit there wondering what the hell he was thinking.

I like Jack, but sometimes he needs to cool it.

Ross was superb - to slaughter Sellwood and still get the ball and most importantly he looks really good under pressure with decision making/disposal
Webster continues to impress me
Goddard we got a steal
Savage was really impressive - been a while since we had that dash and a goal kicker from outside 50

Agree on Ray - I don't see the point and would like to see Acres somewhere
We need someone to play on the monsters down back
Get pick 5 somehow get a polished ball using mid and I'd be happy

Yeah, I can't knock his application, but he seems to get ahead of himself in a lot of plays and ends up butchering the ball especially by foot due to being unbalanced when he lets go of the ball. It has cost us on the scoreboard quite a few times this season, but he does more good than bad though.

I would have a guess and say he is encouraged to take the game on in all facets. He takes it on when running and he also would be told to take it on when kicking. He was rated in the best 3 by both coaches on the weekend even though he turned it over because he takes the game on. it would be a clear instruction. Occassionally that is going to be costly. When we have more players that can do this he wont be taking as many risks.

A bit late to this but:

Positives

Dempster, Armitage and Roberton out. Probably 3 of top 5 in best and fairest.

Hickey, I can't believe he was out of the team for so long.

Bruce attacking the ball with vigour. But that mark he dropped.

Savage and Newnes providing long accurate delivery to the forward line. I loved that Newnes backed himself to kick that goal in the last.

We scored almost 100 with Riewoldt spending no time up forward.

Holmes: I still didn't see where we took advantage from his dominance but showed a lot in his first game.

Minchington was missing for long periods of the game. But three goals. And that last one where he calmly out positioned and outmarked a triple premiership player.

Negatives

Saunders and Shenton had the chance to impress but didn't.
