HARLEY BENNELL
Reported by Damian Barrett, on the footy show that the Saints are strongly inquiring about Harley Bennell, would be a great pick up , but his attitude is a huge factor, if we were to get him hopefully not another Andrew Lovett!
Re: HARLEY BENNELL
In terms of a trade? I reckon at minimum a second rounder and a top 18 player. Someone like Webster, Dunstan, Sinclair, Ross - basically, not cheap.No77778 wrote:What would he cost does anyone know?

Re: HARLEY BENNELL
One of the big footy posters said we are looking at getting a big name player in. Perhaps could be the one who is high profile. It would be nice to have an indigenous player in our colours again. He's a gun but obviously need to make sure he's not troubled still.

Re: HARLEY BENNELL
Oh great. Comparing him to Lovett based on his race. Nice start.coopergrech wrote:Reported by Damian Barrett, on the footy show that the Saints are strongly inquiring about Harley Bennell, would be a great pick up , but his attitude is a huge factor, if we were to get him hopefully not another Andrew Lovett!
Why not compare him to Ben Cousins? I think Harley was caught doing lines of speed 3 years ago? Lovett left the club because of a sexual assault, not drugs or attitude. So fairly ordinary comparison.
Anyway - of course we should be interested. Jesus. He is ideal for us. 22 is a perfect age. If we cant create an environment to keep him in line then we dont deserve to win a flag. You dont win a flag with a team of choir boys (I think Alan Jeans said that).

Re: HARLEY BENNELL
Is this the Ben Cousins argument all over again?

This, my friend, is THE question!No77778 wrote:What would he cost does anyone know?
A fair bit you would think. I am not sure how we would get it done.
Re: HARLEY BENNELL
Cousins was what 30 years old when he joined Richmond and was suffering from serious drug addiction. Bennell is 22 years old and got snapped taking party drugs. The parallels do not run very deep whatsoever.Enrico_Misso wrote:Is this the Ben Cousins argument all over again?

(FWIW we probably would have snagged a flag if we picked up Cousins too.)

Re: HARLEY BENNELL
Except about ten years younger. Whole different argument if Ben was 22, and not 30, slow and injured like when he went to the Tiges.Enrico_Misso wrote:Is this the Ben Cousins argument all over again?

I also think Ben's problems were much much worse. Ben got away with way too much for too long and had success on field.
Id like to think Harley's issues have been nipped in the bud a lot sooner.
Comparing apples to oranges I think.

Re: HARLEY BENNELL
Cousins was old, slow and injured (his hammies were terrible) at that stage and also probably a drug addict.Teflon wrote:I too think we should've taken cousins but let's not go there again for gods sake
Just a ridiculous comparison imo.
If we cant get this kid on track - we dont deserve to win a flag. We arent going to win one if we play it safe on every single decision.
We will need to take some calculated risks.
But yeah - look we didnt need much to win that flag. Cousins may have been enough to get us there.

Re: HARLEY BENNELL
Cousins did play some good footy at Tiges and still racked up good possessions per game and used it well..... but others probably know best I mean he was no "Mqualter or Eddy"....Con Gorozidis wrote:Cousins was old, slow and injured at that stage and also probably a drug addict.Teflon wrote:I too think we should've taken cousins but let's not go there again for gods sake

Re: HARLEY BENNELL
He was ok at the Tiges but that is because he was a frickin good footballer and good enough to go around at 50% of his power. His hamstrings started going in 2007 and he got gradually slower and a shorter kick from thereon.Teflon wrote:Cousins did play some good footy at Tiges and still racked up good possessions per game and used it well..... but others probably know best I mean he was no "Mqualter or Eddy"....Con Gorozidis wrote:Cousins was old, slow and injured at that stage and also probably a drug addict.Teflon wrote:I too think we should've taken cousins but let's not go there again for gods sake

I think maybe we are forgetting just how good Cousins was when he was young. He was absolutely dynamic.

Re: HARLEY BENNELL
I dont want to exaggerate it - but id say there are a few AFL players who have had the odd line here and there. It is a shame HB got photographed doing it, and he is by no means an angel, but lets also not exaggerate and make out hes the worst bloke in the world either.

Don't even joke about trading Webster!!FQF wrote:In terms of a trade? I reckon at minimum a second rounder and a top 18 player. Someone like Webster, Dunstan, Sinclair, Ross - basically, not cheap.No77778 wrote:What would he cost does anyone know?
A 2nd and Ross I would do in a heartbeat but surely the suns wouldn't.

What are people's thoughts on a trade involving our pick 5/6? You'd think that would almost get it done.

Re: HARLEY BENNELL
Tough question. To me it depends on the two top NSW boys. If they are removed from the draft (highly likely) then our pick may not be that flash anyway - in which case - Id take Bennell in a heartbeat.FQF wrote:What are people's thoughts on a trade involving our pick 5/6? If both Hopper and Mills are still in the draft (very unlikely) - then maybe stick to the draft.

Did not want
Lovett
Fevola
Dustin Martin
and definitely don't want this bloke.
Our own idiots are one thing, probably didn't know their vices when we got them.
You would probably use a slightly cracked egg from your fridge, you certainly wouldn't KNOWINGLY purchase same!

5/6 for bennell is a good deal IMO, if he is a decent bloke.. i.e. if he going to be working hardCon Gorozidis wrote:Tough question. To me it depends on the two top NSW boys. The guy is a gun, only 22 years old.... has not yet played his best footy
Not the only young AFL player to ever have a line of coke...
I dont know of his reputation outside that..

Re: HARLEY BENNELL
Yep. And if he has already played 79 games at 22 years of age he must be fairly disciplined. You dont get to 79 AFL games being a yobbo, thats for sure. Quite a lot of good games in those 79 too.SuperDuper wrote:5/6 for bennell is a good deal IMO, if he is a decent bloke.. i.e. if he going to be working hardCon Gorozidis wrote:Tough question. Weird comparisons. Not sure what they have got in common really apart from you thinking they are dickheads?whiskers3614 wrote:Did not want

And is Martin that bad? He seems fairly consistent if you ask me. I am not sure the Tiges are complaining about him. He is very reliable and almost never injured.

If we managed to snag Bennell and Parish I will come over to your house on draft night with a bottle of expensive champagne or whisky. Your choice.SaintWodonga wrote:Gilbo's a gold coast boy... why not Gilbo & our 2nd round? Still leaves our 1st round for Parish (I hope)
