Lonie, 18, was taken as a rd3 selection (pick 41 overall) in last year's NAB AFL Draft and has played 12 games so far in his debut season.

ELECTRIFYING Saints forward Jack Lonie has continued his rapid rise, earning the round 14 nomination for the AFL’s Rising Star Award after Sunday’s 110-point win over Essendon.

In his 12th senior game, the 18-year-old collected 18 disposals, registered five inside 50s and booted a miraculous goal from the boundary line which has been nominated for Goal of the Year.

AS IF earning the round 14 NAB AFL Rising Star nomination was not enough, St Kilda's Jack Lonie is a chance to scoop up another major award by the end of the year.

The 18-year-old small forward was nominated for the Coates Hire Goal of the Year for his sensational dribble kick from the boundary on Sunday – one of many highlights from the Saints' 110-point demolition of Essendon.

And his goal was no fluke.

"It's not something I try to master, but it's a bit of fun to kick a couple of dribble kicks before training every now and then," Lonie told AFL.com.au.

"That builds to getting better at it and in a game, when you need it, it's there."

Kicking goals is just one part of Lonie's talents as a small forward.

Coach Alan Richardson has been clear with Lonie about what else he needs to bring to cement his spot in the Saints' lineup.

"Being a small forward, Richo said to me that if I keep applying that forward pressure and getting involved on the scoreboard and bringing that energy, then I'll be getting a game," Lonie said.

"I've tried to own that forward pressure role and be the best I can be at it."

The former Dandenong Stingray generates a mark from 42 per cent of his kicks that go inside 50 — he’s ranked No. 2 at the Saints for those who had more than 19 of these disposals.

The win over the Bombers was Lonie’s fifth as a Saint, but watching 15 goals sail through after half-time made it the most enjoyable.

“All the guys were really getting up and about. We made sure we kept celebrating our goals because we are building something special and we really wanted to savour that feeling of winning,” he said.

“We brought a complete performance. We worked hard and we deserved it.”

When the Seaford local was selected with pick No. 41 in last year’s draft it was Adam Schneider who showed Lonie the way. It was the veteran who announced Lonie’s good news to the playing group on Monday morning.

“He’s been awesome and I couldn’t thank him enough. He’s a similar player with a great footy brain, so I just try and learn as much from him as possible,” Lonie said

Drafted from the Dandenong Stingrays, Lonie was a standout junior and was Vic Country’s Most Valuable player throughout the Under-18 carnival, booting 21 goals from 15 matches during the TAC Cup last season.

He said his rapid development has a lot to do with the tutoring from one of the more experienced small forwards over the last decade, teammate Adam Schneider.

“He’s someone who has got a great footy brain and I’ve sought as much advice from him as I can.

“He’s been great in teaching me the structures and everything that goes along with it. He’s made sure I’ve fitted in really well and I’m enjoying playing with him.”

Lonie is the 22nd St Kilda player to be nominated for the Rising Star since the award’s inception in 1993, with the club registering two winners – Justin Koschitzke in 2001 and Nick Riewoldt in 2002.

Lonie follows teammates Luke Dunstan and Jack Billings as the third Saints player to be nominated in the last two seasons.

As AR says Jack's fwd pressure is critically important to team fortunes and this with his ability to position himself in dangerous positions. Oh, better not forget his ability to goal and set up goals for team-mates.
I've really appreciated Jack's work from the start of the season. I'm getting the impression that AR is training the young guys like Jack to get the very best out of themselves - aiming for well rounded players.

Couple of Jack's highlights from the Bombers game that I haven't seen mentioned, both from the third qtr I think. He ran back with the flight in defence and made the perfect spoil in the left pocket, not sure who on. Was super gutsy but also incredibly precise execution. He also kicked a carbon copy of his goal of the year nomination, from the opposite pocket, only for it to be touched right on the line. Very happy with this young man as a saint. Was it him or Sinclair that on the night of being drafted went down to Seaford and got a photo at the club?
