Bailey Rice?
Anyone here rate the kid? Can either choose us or Carlton..
If he chooses us, what would we have to give up for him?

Re: Bailey Rice?
He had a very good game at the weekend. If he keeps up that form he may need more than a 3rd round pick.

I'm thinking Steven Lawrence, but I think he started at Brisbane.
Chad Davis was the best and he was only an ordinary player!
What a difference to Geelomg with champion players delivered on a plate!

I don't think he was because I think he played less than 100 games as he went west at the peak of his career.plugger66 wrote:longtimesaint wrote:We have had a couple but they have not been very good.Toy Saint wrote:Have we ever had a father/son?

Brian played 75 games, so no David wasn't a father son selection.

David was a father son as the rule used to be 50 games.

Why wasn't he a father Son. he may not have been but he played enough games so I don't get the 75 games means he wasn't. Can you explain why the 75 games is important.

Rice spent one morning a week for a stretch this year at the Saints, and also played two games for Carlton's VFL affiliate the Northern Blues. He met recently with new Blues coach Brendon Bolton.
He has until October 30 to make a decision, but he suggested it could happen after the combine, which ends on Sunday.
"St Kilda's come to my house, went to Carlton, met the new coach.
"The decision will probably be after the combine. [I'll] speak to dad, speak to Maxy [manager Mark Kleiman], and I'll come to something after the combine.
"[I'm] not leaning one way or another. Either of them I'm fine with."
Rice said he had spoken to clubs other than the Saints and the Blues, knowing that he could yet end up somewhere else.
"[It's] live on draft night, so you won't know until draft night. I guess it puts you in the same spot as the other kids.
"It's not a bad thing I guess.

Re: Bailey Rice?
Starting to wonder wether Dean was at Carlton too long, and may be influenced by their "ways" . Dean was banned as a coach from basketball for six months because he played his son ( i think it was Bailey) in a grand final under a false name in 2013... Very Carlton like.
That being said hope Bailey chooses the Saints if he is half as courageous as his old man he will be more than worthy. I sometimes sat with his fiancé in the stand every time Dean got crunched she used to get upset and put her arms around me... She was a living doll ... it made loosing by ten goals almost bearable.

Bailey would've been pissed off to find his dad was a cheat then.supersaints wrote:Starting to wonder wether Dean was at Carlton too long, and may be influenced by their "ways" . FWIW his manager is SOS's best mate whose old man was a long time employee of Carlton.saintspremiers wrote:Bailey would've been pissed off to find his dad was a cheat then.supersaints wrote:Starting to wonder wether Dean was at Carlton too long, and may be influenced by their "ways" . But he's friends with saints
But he's friends with saints
and of CarltonRice spent eight Tuesdays at Seaford this year receiving medical treatment on an injured groin, joining skills sessions and watching players go through their match footage.
Coach Alan Richardson, recruiter Tony Elshaug and list chief Ameet Bains paid Rice a house visit recently, the Saints quizzed him on Thursday at the draft combine and he played TAC Cup with goalsneak Jack Lonie last year.
Rice goes to school with Tom Siposs — brother of delisted Saint Arryn — and struck up friendships with Hugh Goddard and Tom Lee this year.
Choose the Saints and Rice can likely stay at home next year. Join the Blues and he’ll have to relocate.
Rice, 18, doesn’t watch much footy yet found himself parked in front of the TV when the Saints played this year, drawn to their exciting brand and bright future.
“But then there’s Carlton, who I’ve been following all my life, so if I chose St Kilda … it’s tough, I really don’t know what I’ll do,” Rice said.
The Saints have been far more hands-on this year, but Rice — flanked by Dean and manager Mark Kleiman — sat down with Bolton after he was named coach.
“(Bolton) was good. He likes to speak …. he speaks quite a bit,” Rice said.
“The club is starting its rebuild, which is not a bad thing to be a part of because you grow with everyone and they’re the same age.”

Re: Bailey Rice?
17 going on 18, not sure what to do.
The father will have a big influence.
Big enough to think Bailey will go where his father advises.
So what do you say Dean.
I would think that advice will be both clubs are rebuilding.
Both clubs have a recent history of administrative turmoil.
Both clubs have the same salary cap but Carlton has the bigger sponsor base.
Carlton are a more financially stable club.
My bet is Carlton 75%, St Kilda 25%

Re: Bailey Rice?
Dean Rice would consider himself a Carlton man especially since he played in a premiership there.

Re: Bailey Rice?
If my memory is still functioning accurately Dean Rice had an extremely serious injury that many thought would prevent him playing again.magnifisaint wrote:Dean Rice would consider himself a Carlton man especially since he played in a premiership there.
After a couple of years St Kilda did not believe he would make it but Carlton had more faith.
He worked his way back into the game but never as good as he was on the wing for the saints.
When a player goes to play at another club he may well feel uncomfortable when visiting his former club.
But there is no such awkwardness at the new club.
The player may never receive the same love as a one club player but he is appreciated by all.
I don't know Dean Rice or anything about his social life but I am going to guess he spends more time socialising at Carlton than St Kilda.
So I have to agree with you I suspect Dean Rice sees himself in Navy Blue.
However it is well known that when a son ends up at a different club than the parents have supported all their lives, the parents support goes wherever the son is.
Even if that is Collingwood or Carlton.
It is a parent thing.

Re: Bailey Rice?
As a parent, you want what is best for your kid and where they will get the most opportunity and most looked after. The medical treatment provided by the Saints this year would have been major brownie points. Dean's advice will be based on where he thinks the long term opportunity is - and given we are both in rebuild mode , it will be line ball. Bailey's perception of Richo will be huge influencing factor. - which is about the only thing we haven't heard about. I'm optimistic.
