Matt Maguire
After 99 games for us, he deserves to be mentioned in the fan forum.
He has been forced to retire due to concussion issues after 170 games with us and the Lions.
I would like to thank him for his services to us, and commend him for his bravery is coming back from a horrific leg injury, and the complications from that injury. Many players would have never played again after that. The only reason we let him go was the uncertainty of his future.
Thanks Goose, and good luck to you in the future.

Re: Matt Maguire
I'm sorry to hear of his retirement.
I always loved his work as a defender.
Ditto re the broken leg-you could the crack from the other side of the ground and the whole crowd went silent.
Good luck Goose in your retirement.

Re: Matt Maguire
This bloke would still be our CHB were it not for that broken leg and probably would have picked up a couple of AA selections.
Like too many others from that era he was ruined by injury.

Was a big fan of goose
That injury was devastating it got infected and he dropped 13kgs and looked skinny on the footy show if i recall correctly
At the time was in great form and just shows how footy is a tough business
Wish him all the best for the future

Goose is king
Goose was king
Might need to change my name.
I think Billings18 sounds good
I'm predicting an early premiership
Congratulations Goose on your career

Re: Matt Maguire
Was going on to become a very, very good defender - and a bit of a character. Real pity he didn't get that 100th game, in just about any other season he would've. best of luck to him.

Re: Matt Maguire
Yep. With Matty (now 31) at CHB and Luke Penny (now 34) at FB, we had real class and real strength on the backline. It would have been a backline to rival Geelong's. In fact, it did in 2004. Luke's career came to an end in 2005 due to a PCL and Matty's (effectively) the following year with the broken leg. Both could have been 300 game players.Armoooo wrote:This bloke would still be our CHB were it not for that broken leg and probably would have picked up a couple of AA selections.

Loved the Goose. Terrific courage. A lot of people are calling this a premature retirement but is it? Seems more a of a miracle he lasted this long with all his injuries. Arguably could have retired a few years back.

Sorry to hear that The Goose is cooked.
He was shaping up as an A grader for us.
Then was just a shadow of his former self after that horrendous injury.
Pretty sure I read that his grandfather played for us?
Goodluck Matt.

Goose was an A grader before he got injured. Absolute gun. As good as Gilbo easily.Enrico_Misso wrote:Sorry to hear that The Goose is cooked.

I'm just pleased he eeked out 71 games for the Lions and got an income stream for a few years post us.
Could've easily given the game away but he's all class and dedication. Reminds me a bit of Jason Cripps.

Re: Matt Maguire
Totally agree, Saintspremiers. He was just pure class - was very sad when he broke his leg - he was one of my favourite players at the time. He was to us, what Tony Hall was to Hawthorn. Both had an unlimited future, had luck gone the other way.saintspremiers wrote:Goose was an A grader before he got injured. Absolute gun. What might have been, hey. He was a gun pre-broken leg, fearless and unpassable at chb.
Don't mention the Barry Hall preliminary final hit on Goose. Makes my blood boil to this day.

Re: Matt Maguire
good on him for putting family first
I loved his work at the saints and so saddened he couldn't get that last game..
I believe he and his partner are expecting.

memory coming back- if the Lions hadn't taken him the saints were going to - shame- he would have gotten the 100th maybe-- the old sliding doors.

“Being able to finish off and play good footy, it does give you a bit of hope for the new season,” he said.
“After going through what I have you become an eternal optimist, you find good in every situation and try and work it to your advantage.”
That’s why despite one too many hard knocks forcing him to hang up his boots after 170 games, you won’t hear the Barwon Heads product moan about his predicament.
“I remember Rob Harvey always saying it’s a privilege to pull on a jumper and go out and play for the team, it’s not a right,” Maguire said.
“I have felt very privileged to play as many years as I have and to be able to enjoy the game for as long as I have.”

Re: Matt Maguire
A great Saints player and a shame about the badly broken leg. I was there when it happened.
Very disappointing that the Club did not keep him on.
It sounds like he has made a very wise decision to go while his health is still ok.

I remember a game against the Magpies at the Dome when Goose had to replace that pea hearted clown we got from the Roos in the ruck. He did remarkably well for such a young man.bigcarl wrote:What might have been, hey. He was a gun pre-broken leg, fearless and unpassable at chb.

That pea heart never played for the saints again. It was also remembered as Steve Lawrence's last game.

When he was picked up by the Lions he was injected straight into the side and played out the season - & Yes i realise that the clubs were at different ends of the spectrum - but 1 more game ...
& he averaged as many games per season with the Lions (post injury) that he did with the Saints

From what I remember yes he was in the 2's and some of the RL affect but they were trying to get that one extra game and he did hamstring or similiar and missed when he would have played

As a Saints supporter I remember being disgusted at the way Ross Lyon abandoned Matt Maguire
He was an absolute champion at the Saints and a major reason why they were climbing the ladder.
Good luck with the future Goose and enjoy the arrival of hopefully a baby saint "
Actually the saints have a terrible record when it comes to looking after its injured players.
Goose, Joel Smith, luke Penny and Jarryd Allen , to name just 4.

Yep. We may miss out on a father son selection down the track because of that omission. Maquire plus Ball bloodlines won't necessarily produce an AFL grade footballer but the coupling has a better chance than most.sunsaint wrote:can you elaborate? as I reckon he was a RL victim - who played Raph & Zac ahead of himsaintbrat wrote:http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/m ... 7411463151

Do you actually understand what sunsaint wants SB to elaborate on? Obviously not.
