But great result nonetheless.
When was the last time Sandy beat Port at Port?
This augurs very well for the club's future.

He didn't play and neither did Curren, whereas the other emergencies for tomorrow both played. I thought Wright was clearly best on today. He showed great pace out of the backline, backed himself in tight spots and his kicking was much better in near perfect conditions. Other highlights for me were:
- the sheer effort Lee put brought for most of the day, I've been a doubter but maybe he can reinvent himself and play a few games down back if needed
- Jason Holmes deserves a game, his tapwork and positioning is first class, he shepherds, he tackles and he gets as high as any ruckman we've ever had
- Markworth on a wing and Sippo on the ball both had their moments and will be better for the hit-out
- mcCartin covered a lot of ground prior to his injury, so assured

Predictably
- the extra work up forward meant Hugh Goddard was walking before half-time, if he plays firsts any time soon he will a) have to play back and b) either be subbed or be the sub
- Lewis Pierce found good position but can't jump and can't find the ball

Saunders, Murdoch, Schneider, hickey, curren, Sinclair and White all didn't play in the seniors. Not sure if any played in the dev squad. Some handy players there, If the saints stay healthy Sandy could really give the premiership a shake

Was at the game today and Paddy definitely looked concussed again as he came off- was very wobbly and bleeding from the head again (might have just opened up the stitches from two weeks ago).

I asked Justin Cooper (who is the VFL Reporter for Saints.com.au) on Twitter about whether Paddy was concussed again and this is what he said;
@justinr_cooper: Just a head knock, don't know severity at this stage. Bye next week so will have sufficient rest.
Before the injury, Paddy looked great. Leading well, working over his opponent and was kicking them from all angles (including one about 40 out in the right pocket). He needs to work on his fitness and bulk up a bit- but he's showing enough at VFL level to suggest he'll be a great player for us in the future. Hugh also looked impressive up forward in the first half, but dropped off considerably in the second. It should be noted his goals both came in the first half.

As for the rest, DMac should not be playing at VFL level. He is all class and I expect he'll be back in the seniors sooner rather than later. Wright was good- but was let down by his disposal. I loved his pace off half-back though, bursting through the pack...if he can hit a few more targets, he'll find a permanent spot in the seniors. Siposs and Markworth both had, it has to be said, a rather quiet return to AFL footy but both appeared to come through unscathed, which is the main thing. Will be interesting to see how they come along in the coming weeks.

Sandy in the Top 4 has to be a good sign for the club. It just has to be. This progress cannot be denied. I know Cockie and some other Sandy guys are very good players (Le Grice, CJ, Brown) but our kids are actually good. I am fairly pumped with that result.

Le Grice is still only 19, second half of last year I seem to remember he looked OK but it's only this year he's really looked good at VFL level. Probably not big enough as a key back at AFL level, I think he's only 192cm, but might be an Alex Silvagni type chance for some team at the end of this year.

It was only the Borough's 12th loss at its home fortress under the reins of Gary Ayres as coach since he took over the mantle in 2008. Certainly for Hudson, a former Hawthorn premiership teammate of Ayres, it was his best win at the helm.

With the Borough leading by five points at the final change, it was goal-for-goal early in the final term as McCartin made his mark with the opener before Toby Pinwill replied. A goal to Clay Johnston gave Port a nine-point buffer before Saad snapped a terrific goal on the run.

Saad loomed as the matchwinner and kicked another goal - his third - to get the Zebras within two points.

On the back of four consecutive Sandringham behinds - remembering that inaccuracy had hurt the Zebras in past losses this season - finally, at the 29 minute mark, the Zebras landed the matchwinning blow through Brown.

The Borough are now precariously placed in sixth spot with a record of 5-3.

Le Grice was close to best on ground today, he said was impassable across the backline. Him, Mitch brown and CJ were the best of the sandy listed players
Mitch Brown will definitely be on an AFL list next year

SANDRINGHAM d PORT MELBOURNE

Margin: 7 points

Telling facts: The Zebras and the Borough played out one for the ages at North Port Oval. There was never more than a couple of goals in it during a high-quality see-sawing battle for most of the day, until Eli Templeton’s second goal in the dying stages sealed Sandringham’s memorable sixth triumph of the season.

Leading goal kickers: McCartin, Saad 3 (Sandringham) / O’Sullivan 4 (Port Melbourne)

AFL's VFL Reporter is right on top of things
State league affiliate: Sandringham (VFL)
This weekend: Port Melbourne v Sandringham - Saturday June 13, 2pm, North Port Oval

St Kilda forward Ahmed Saad was on fire for Sandringham on Saturday, playing the perfect small forward's game in the Dragons' seven-point win over Port Melbourne.

Saad kicked 3.3 and laid 10 tackles, finishing with 18 possessions.

"He had a bit of a sore ankle for a while but he's overcome that and he was on today," coach Paul Hudson told AFL.com.au.

"He was very hard to play on with the way he moved around, and the role he played for us was perfect."

The Saints decided not to play rookies Jack Sinclair and Adam Schneider in the VFL, giving them a rest after they were forced off the senior list under the AFL's rookie rules.

They called Arryn Siposs and Daniel Markworth back into the senior VFL team after serious injuries instead, with both performing well.

Ruckman Jason Holmes continued to impress at VFL level, while midfielder Eli Templeton was strong in an inside role, also pushing forward to kick a crucial late goal.

Paul Hudson (Sandringham)

“We had a heavy focus to come here and have a crack … we stuck to our structures … that was a little bit inconsistent on the day but we managed to get it right at the right time. It was a really good, solid team win, to be honest. I was really pleased at some crunch goals.’’
