The lore of Lockett was clear for all to see years after his retirement at a St Kilda Hall of Fame function in 2010 when he was named a legend of the club.

Panicked club officials paced the room shortly before he was due to be presented as no one was sure if he had made the drive from Bowral. When he finally arrived, his close friend and former teammate Danny Frawley was unable to finish his speech as he was moved to tears.

The spirit of those heady Moorabbin days was in the room that night as fans queued up just to shake hands and get a photo with the man who had not worn red, white and black for 16 years but was still their hero above all who came before and after him. Among the queue were modern-day stars Leigh Montagna and Justin Koschitzke who were so nervous to approach Lockett that they asked long-time trainer Ken Whiffin to introduce them

Yeah was great to see Plugger and Neil Roberts both get their awards. Neil had the crowd in stitches he hasnt lost any of his sense of humour! Really enjoyed the teleacast apart from Akermanis that guy is still a complete tool even at the age he is now!

Tony Lockett’s status as an AFL legend is now merely official. “Plugger’’ had been a legend in the minds of St Kilda and Sydney Swans supporters long before he vanished into reclusive retirement.

By any significant measure Lockett sits at the peak of the game. His trophy cabinet groans under the weight of achievement.

Brilliant player. Carl Ditterich drew me to the Saints but Plugger was the best I have seen (albeit from countless TV matches!).

Tony reckoned he was now a socialite as he had been to two functions within 8 or 9 months!

Maybe they can do one of those Toyota ads with Winmar passing to Lockett and Lockett kicking the goal and hopefully they could film that at Moorabbin. And maybe they can let us know about it to get the crowd atmosphere. You can only dream.

Greatest player I will ever see and yes im biased but I don't care. Because we have never won a flag in my time he has given me the best moments in footy. The Carlton game at Moorabbin was one of the best ive ever seen. The Swans game at the SCG was the silliest win ever in footy. Made our WB win this year look easy. We were 48 points down with only 9.50 left on the clock. He won that game off his own boot. There were many others as well. I think he way have kicked 15 or so against the Swans. Even the 8 against the Footscray to get 100 goals in 1987 sticks in my mind. And who can forget his first 3 games in 1991. Coming back from injury and totally unfit he started the year with 12, 10 and 12 goals. Even in the forth game Sheedy played about 3 guys on him and he kicked 4 goals and one of the Essendon backman got BOG that day. If you kick 4 now you are the best. He was a freak. I know it shouldn't be said but even his 16 against Ftizroy when playing for the swans was another great moment for me in footy as was that point against Essendon to get into the GF.

Plugger you are a legend. You were a legend before last night. You are my hero.

I saw the second half of the 16 straight he kicked for Sydney v the Lions from the Mount Mistake hill at the Western Oval.

never seen anything like it before or since. Even for Lockett it was amazing.
