this is at odd's to the suggested reason previously given by the media-- ( to keep the fans out for CLOSED sessions)But above all else, the Hawks want to fill in an empty shelf in their Waverley reception.
It is a spot for their 13th premiership cup, with the chase for that next flag helped by keeping up with — or ahead of — their rival contenders.
Says Roughead of the advantages of an elite training centre: “Hopefully we are a destination club and we can attract players and free agents in the future by showing players this (facility). It might make them want to come here.”
Hawthorn’s new Dingley relocation is still five years away, which means 28-year-old Roughead needs to hang on for a while yet.
St Kilda’s footballers never warmed to remote Seaford and its lack of urban charm and the club almost immediately grew out of its new facility.
Hawthorn’s leaders have already ticked off travel times and accessibility issues and the club believes it will never outgrow the 28-hectare site.
The Hawks also want to let their fans in.

Kingston Council as well.
Hawthorn will be putting its hand out so we need to get our promised money first.

I don't think they effect us. 2 reasons. Its 5 years away and we will have all our money by then. Secondly they probably don't even need money. Also what are the Hawks thinking. No public transport. ordinary area. maybe all they care about is having great facilities. Strange. It should be about the coffee. No player will go that far out of town.

They're eating our lunch.
Years of poor decision making at the adminstrative level now coming home to roost where now we are not strong enough to defend our own backyard.

Why? It will have no effect all.
Re: Hawthorn moving training base to dingley
Location of facilities builds support in the local communities. It is a projection of their brand into a muncipality where they haven't had any visiblity, where we will have our home base and where we have traditionally had first crack at building local support. Whether we have been successful or not is another story.plugger66 wrote:stjay wrote:They're eating our lunch.

All of a sudden the local schools get visits from their players, the club gets in the local papers and over time they build their local base.
Question is why are they pushing Sth West from Waverley when they could have chosen many different locations in the South East of Melbourne?
A big investment decision like this is carefully crafted - I have no doubt.

Totally disagree. The days of where clubs train don't matter. No one watches training. Its how the clubs do the school visits and even more importantly than that, its how successful you are. Hawthorn have always been a SE suburb or close to it. It wont matter especially in 5 years time if we are up the top and they are down the bottom.
And more to the point how has incompetence mattered to this? From what you say incompetence has nothing to do with this.

Re: Hawthorn moving training base to dingley
Dingley...grew up in that place when I first moved over from the ditch as a little one. Even though I don't live there anymore, hate to see the Hawks there. There were a few Saints players that lived around there. David Grant...(would drive by his house just to see a glimpse of him...not stalking at all!!), Kane Taylor who I went to school with his brother and I think maybe Trevor Barker lived there...my memory is fading but I think of a couple of others but cant remember their names. It was in the Melbourne district back then as my brother played for them in the little league. Anyway make sure Saints take all the money from the Council so they have to fund their own way if they want to. Worst place for public transport, the buses (when I was at work) will stop at like 7.00pm, would have to get picked up from either Cheltenham or Mentone Station......watching the soccer at the park near the back of my house down the bottom of Howard Road.....ahh the good old days.

Ok so, you don't think that in the days of player academies which will draw on local talent, where a club is located, and by extension their brand, matters?
Well I put to you geographies absolutely matter and that this is a beachhead where they thought they could push as far west as possible and have first crack at as much of the Sth East as possible. Football clubs are everybit about their local community - I am sure you know that. And so from our perspective, a string of poor admin decisions means we are not financially in a position to be the "first mover" with all of its advantages to make a strong investment similar to this and lock down the area.
This can go back and forth and only time will tell but the Hawks have only been a south eastern club since they moved to Waverley and why did they move there?
Because Waverley with the population distribution was considered the middle of Melbourne.
And as I said, you don't make a $50m investment to establish a home base that you're not expected to ever grow out of i.e last forever unless you've done your homework.

Player academies? No such thing in Victorian and I doubt there ever will be unless they change the drafting rules. Emotive though. All that matters is how successful you are and how often you get out in the community. That costs nothing. We are the first mover because we are already in the area. It will depend on how the side is going in 5 years time.

You do realise they are diluting the player academies in NSW and QLG by the new bidding system. Wont happen for a long while. Certainly whilst we have a draft. Wont have any effect on the Hawks moving in to an area 10k from where we will eventually be.
Re: Hawthorn moving training base to dingley
But most of the northern clubs have them, Port have one, the Crows have one and we have what we call a "player academy".saintsRrising wrote:Can't see the AFL allowing any Vic team to have a Player Academy.stjay wrote:

I am sure I read somewhere that this is the big lesson being taken from European football.
Even with the draft points system, if you had a young gun come through your academy you would have first option to pay up with draft points for him.
And let's face it, who wouldn't?
This is the future of how you get access to high-end talent without sacrificing performance.

Not a hope. And I don't think the crows or Port have one. We certainly don't. Only the Northern clubs have them because we need the game to grow in that area.
