Do we start worrying about Paddy McCartin?
I know it is only 6 weeks into the season but we haven't seen anything of Paddy to suggest he is No. 1 pick. Will he be the next Jack Watts??
Should we have gone for a mid-fielder like Billings or Stevens .
Don't get me wrong, I want him to be a Gun but the drums will start beating soon if he does not start delivering. Even in VFL he has not performed yet.
Cheers,

Slow developer. Wait until next year before judging. It was a silly mistake playing him in the ones. Blind freddy could see that

I think you need to face reality -the kid is 18 and tall forwards take longer.mohannair wrote:I know it is only 6 weeks into the season but we haven't seen anything of Paddy to suggest he is No. 1 pick. Will he be the next Jack Watts??

Cheers,
If you watched the VFL match he played up the ground and played quite well -14 disposals and delivered the ball well.
Look for 2016 or 2017 and he will repay the faith.
One year will be our year
Re: Do we start worrying about Paddy McCartin?
Seriously? He is a tall forward. I would think he is progressing how everyone at the club would expect. A mid would have preformed better earlier but as good as the club is going we aren't playing finals until at least 2018 so there is no hurry. The other player would have taken is Petracca and we don't know how he would have gone with us this year because he hasn't played.

Tom Boyd had such an impact in his first season the Dogs paid him $1 mill a season for 7 years.

Oh give him a break.. Crikey. Talk about a culture of instant gratification. He's barely stepped into the system. Phew.

I'm positive he'll kick a goal by round 10.

Re: Do we start worrying about Paddy McCartin?
With all of the due diligence conducted by our recruiting team (who by the way saw fit to select Lonie, McKenzie and Sinclair), you would think that they would know the relative value of McCartin and also Goddard.
Also with the bigger recruits, lets not forget that up until this year they have been playing against kids their own age who by definition have not fully matured. It's a huge step up to play in a key position against fully grown men who have been in the system for a number of years. When Paddy has got stronger in a few years to be on a par with his opponents then you can judge him. Stay calm and be patient I say.

Waiting for anything worthwhile, that's so yesterday.
Just think instant gratification, it's the new black.

Re: Do we start worrying about Paddy McCartin?
I love how you've included Billings in your example when, up until this week, a lot of Saints supporters (and other team supporters) were thinking we'd made a big mistake taking him, especially in light of Bontempelli's success at Pick 4. This week he's a superstar...see how quickly things can change?!
Paddy showed enough on the weekend to suggest that he has what it takes. Start worrying in another year or two if he still hasn't come on.
If you want to feel better about Paddy, take a look at Jonathon Brown's first year of football (a year in which the Lions made a Semi-Final).
1st Game (R5 2000): 0 disposals, 0 marks, 0 goals
2nd Game (R6 2000): 13 disposals, 7 marks, 0 goals
3rd Game (R7 2000): 1 disposal, 0 marks, 0 goals
4th Game (R8 2000): 12 disposals, 4 marks, 0 goals
5th Game (R11 2000): 1 disposal, 0 marks, 0 goals
6th Game (R17 2000): 6 disposals, 1 mark, 0 goals
7th Game (R18 2000): 8 disposals, 3 marks, 1 goal
8th Game (R19 2000): 7 disposals, 2 marks, 0 goals
9th Game (R20 2000): 13 disposals, 9 marks, 1 goal
10th Game (R21 2000): 20 disposals, 8 marks, 1 goals *vs 16th on the ladder*
11th Game (R22 2000): 23 disposals, 5 marks, 2 goals *vs 12th on the ladder*
12th Game (EF 2000): 11 disposals, 5 marks, 0 goals
13th Game (SF 2000): 8 disposals, 3 marks, 0 goals
Chin up, he'll get there!

Re: Do we start worrying about Paddy McCartin?
Great call 4everSaint, this is what I was looking for a, a comparative figure for another great player. How did Roey go in his first year or Pav?
Billings does show some class last year but he has improved a lot this year.

Not worried in the slightest.
We can just enjoy watching the team develop while Paddy gently percolates away at Sandy.
Nothing at all to worry about

4ever Saint, do you have any figures for Barry Hall? I remember after about a month or more of watching him run around like he was lost, I was totally convinced he was a spud.

Re: Do we start worrying about Paddy McCartin?
I think Paddy kicked 4 goals against Frankston in the VFL practise match and looked excellent.
I watched Billings do exactly the same last year (although I think he may have kicked 5) and I could tell straight away that both are full of class.

He'll be just fine. Played really well for Sandy yesterday. Needs to build his tank.
