He doesn't look ready to me. Show glimpses and you can see he will be good given time.
I don't understand why he has jumped Buddy White and Tommy Lee in the pecking order so soon. I'm sure he will eventually be a better player than both, but right now why can't White get a turn? He may have kicked a goal or two.

I'm just amazed and impressed with the comprehensive data that Bergholt has collected. Where do you get all of this data? and how long does it take to collate?

He needs to spend time in the VFL. The problem is we do not have a replacement for Roo.saint-stu wrote:He doesn't look ready to me. Show glimpses and you can see he will be good given time.

White is frequently injured and Lee not up to it.
It may have been better to have played Hickey and maybe create some crumbs.

Re: Forwards on Debut
Don't think the conditions would have suited Spencer and I'd say they thought McCartin might provide more of a contest physically than Lee. Then there's also the chance that Roo will only miss one game so maybe they thought it was a good opportunity to give him a small taste before he goes back to the VFL.saint-stu wrote:He doesn't look ready to me. I think White was probably a bit underdone but I think he debuted against Richmond last year in the rain and kicked 3 goals..remboy wrote:Don't think the conditions would have suited Spencer and I'd say they thought McCartin might provide more of a contest physically than Lee. For his first game I just think playing Paddy in the wet with no roo to help him out and without previously playing a proper vfl/reserves game was setting him up to fail.

Re: Forwards on Debut
Just pointing out that Boyd had 4 disposals, 1 mark, 0 goals last week in a winning team (and perfect conditions at the MCG). That's 11 games in.
Tall forwards are a work in progress. I remember back in 2005 when St Kilda played Hawthorn in Round 12 and it was Lance Franklin's first year (he was 12 games into his career). Franklin played on Matt Maguire that day and Maguire kicked 3 goals on him, collected 25 disposals and was BOG. He also recieved the 3 Brownlow votes for the game.
Put it into perspective. You can't all debut like Stephen Milne

Re: Forwards on Debut
Pretty tough start finding out 1 hour before the game. I would give him half the season in the VFL. No point him being bashed around and starved of opportunities when he could develop his game in the VFL. I would have liked to see White (unfortunate about the injury). Otherwise why not bring in Hickey?

Re: Forwards on Debut
Funny people saying he isn't ready. No one is a ready made footballer when they start. Look at those stats, he's better than Brown, Tredrea, Franklin and Carey. Did they go back and play in the twos until they were ready? It's an overrated term. Just manage the bodies. As far as the mind goes, you've either got it (Bangers) or you aint (Watts).
Gehrig emerged from scans yesterday saying he was "as sweet as a bun"

Re: Forwards on Debut
On the plus side, he got one game to havea taste of AFL Levevel Pressure so that he knows what is required.
He was quite possibly told that was just filling in for this week and so may not play next week, unless they dropa small.
Membrey had some postive signs last night, and so that will keep him in the team.
And BruceAlmighty was steady with 2 goals.
Club will be keen to go well in NZ against the blues and so I see Roo and Joey both back in.
Reserves are playing Sunday, making it hard to pick anyone for next Saturday. So watch for who does not play tomorrow.

I thought they said they would play the guys in form so they did exactly what they said they would do.

Re: Forwards on Debut
I saw Lockett play his first game for us, and thought then that he could be useful player- I saw similar in Paddy..big bloke with sharp skills, and although still raw could get one more game.

Re: Forwards on Debut
Well if Roo doesn't come up, and neither White or Lee do anything special today, I'd say it's almost certain that Paddy gets to cross the ditch.spert wrote:I saw Lockett play his first game for us, and thought then that he could be useful player- I saw similar in Paddy..big bloke with sharp skills, and although still raw could get one more game.
And I'd have no problem with that.
Re: Forwards on Debut
The pecking order for the spot next week:
Riewoldt
Daylight
Spencer (with a 3+ goal good performance today)
Paddy
Spencer (with an average performance today)
It doesn't say much about Lee's chances that when he's fit and healthy he is not even in calculations.

With Paddy now out of today's game it allows greater opportunities for others to shine.

Re: Forwards on Debut
We have a good one on our hands.
The fact that he couldn't take a grab on a wet day was almost a blessing. His follow up work and his work at ground level was fantastic. He has a brain.
What is fantastic is that despite botching a few marks, he quickly recovered and impacts the next passages of play or was able to regather and dish off.

Re: Forwards on Debut
Call me crazy but I was actually impressed. I was at the ground and he kept running to the right spots and getting by himself.
Ok he dropped some marks - but being in the right spots is half the game. God knows Stanley took 7 years and could never learn where and when to run.
Those marks stay in and suddenly he has 10+ marks to his name. He also seems tough.

Re: Forwards on Debut
Strikes me as the sort of kid that would be seriously annoyed at the marks he dropped - and will work his butt off to improve.
With Roo out for a few weeks I hope they give him a couple more games. I think he will improve quite a bit once he gets his first 25 games out the way, and again once he gets to 60'odd games.
