Player raid warchest for 2016
Posted this on another forum when discussing the money will will have to entice uncontracted or FA players in the coming trade period.
Going from this article
http://www.afl.com.au/news/2014-06-05/s ... -confirmed
Saints currently pay 95% of 2015 SC limit.
This means we currently pay $9,567,450 on a cap limit of $10,071,000
In 2016 because we are @95% of the SC in 2015 we can spend up to 105% next season
2016 the SC rises to $10,360,000. 105% is $10,878,000 or $518k more than the total cap allowance
This means we have the potential to pay more than $1.3 million in player payments next season compared to this season.
That is a s*** load of cash we have to raid with.
We are box seating this for the raid.

One of the elite GWS mids.
Treloar, Shiel, WHE would be first cabs off the rank and in the perfect age group.

I've never seen a bad St.Kilda player - that's just how they are.

Would like Hosking Elliot. Wont cost as much as the others.
In Springfield, they're eating the dogs. The people that came in, they're eating the cats. They’re eating – they are eating the pets of the people that live there.

One concerning sentence from his article:
St Kilda will play 95 per cent of the cap this year, but given its cashflow issues has not put a huge amount of money into prepaying contracts.

yes, it is not taking into account how many back ended contracts were put in place during the futurefest.
Considering this system was in place before the re-signings, some of the space may already been used up next year.
So it is not cut and dried. My figures are purely based on what we paid this year and because of it what we can pay next year.
Still I think we have a quid or two to throw at a Sheil a Treloar, or a Hoskins-Elliot.
matrix, I think all three (not sure on H-E though) are all out of contract this season.
Sheil and a second round dp, if GWS want anything, or else DFA, or worst case scenario which hasn't happened for seasons but still an option PSD.
Can dream cant I?

Re: Player raid warchest for 2016
Can we do 95% next year and then 110% instead in 2017 and go ballstic?
I'd rather wait a year if we can do as I'm suggesting

I think we would even have a lot more than that. There is also promotional money which I doubt we are using because we would have struggled to get to 95% anyway so I reckon if we wanted to we would have close to 2 million to play with. I still say its to early for FA but trading isn't out of the question. We need to look promsing though to get young players interested. A season like last year wont do it.

Don't know about promotional money and as I said the figure are just raw figures extrapolated out from the figures in the article and our % spend for this season.
Could be increased spending in back ended contacts, or as you point out, other expenditure items that falls under SC.
And I think trading would probably be the priority more than FA at year end, but who knows.
And you last point is valid I would have thought. Apparently from early reports the first 6 players in this years draft will be pretty good, so we don't necessarily have to finish right down the bottom.
Theoretically finishing say 13th would give us #6 and would mean we won, say 6 games for the year. Means we would have some leverage in trade talks for a Sheil for example, would have the cash, and also pick up a high dp in the draft.
Dear me, me dreams are getting a bit deluded I think

Re: Player raid warchest for 2016
And what happens the year after, going from 105% to 100%? Some retirements/delistings me thinks.
Gehrig emerged from scans yesterday saying he was "as sweet as a bun"
Re: Player raid warchest for 2016
Riewoldt fisher dempster montagna would all be on decent coin. Some of our future fest would have had their contracts front ended. The club would have planned for this scenario. I'm confident there is a signing in the works

Re: Player raid warchest for 2016
plugger66 is correct
I understand we comfortably have $1.5m p.a. to spend on FA's from 2016 onwards (i.e. to start targeting end of this year if we want)
Clubs will always pay what they need to on players and cut back elsewhere - J Ralph doesn't make sense.

Re: Player raid warchest for 2016
I believe you're correct Plugs. We are only paying 95% due to the fact that we HAVE to pay 95% of the salary cap. I think that this is a big reason why a lot of the saints player (those 19 that got signed late last year) got contracts between 1-2 years.plugger66 wrote:I think we would even have a lot more than that. I have a feeling the club had talked with these players and said that they will pay them overs, due to the new rules, and once their contracts are up they will provide longer contracts, at a slightly lower wage. Either that or perhaps the club has the foresight that some of them will no longer be at St. Kilda when their contract is up.

Re: Player raid warchest for 2016
Why are we limited to only one out of contract target???
Assume some of the youngsters are front loaded (to get us to 95% for last year and this year) so we have $1.5M+ free in 2016, plus a couple of high profile retirements in coming seasons....
Let's go get Shiel and Treloar.....

Because unlike FA you have to swap players or picks to get them. it would be impossible for us to get both.

They're still uncontracted, meaning we have bargaining power if these guys genuinely want to come to us. Nothing's impossible....plugger66 wrote:St Chris wrote:Why are we limited to only one out of contract target???

Its impossible to get both, well obviously not impossible but about 99.9% no hope of getting both. Better to try for one but it would cost our first pick and probably a later pick. A great player is worth it if young enough.

Re: Player raid warchest for 2016
yeah agreed. Would be lovely to get one of Sheil or Treloar. Still don't know if it would cost a 1st rounder though. Both are out of contract at year end, and if either wanted to come to the Saints, well we have the upperhand in deal with GWS.plugger66 wrote:St Chris wrote:They're still uncontracted, meaning we have bargaining power if these guys genuinely want to come to us. They could be DFA's, or while it hasn't happened for a while PSD (assuming of course we have the #1 pick).
Anyway look at the potential gold we have picked up with Longer and Bruce down the draft.

Would prefer to keep recruiting young talent out of the draft and maybe sneak an uncontracted youngster from GWS at season's end

Aish looks certain of leaving and Victorian clubs are in the race. He'd be a nice addition but somewhat unproven.
