Re: Geary needs to have a big year
Agree with these posts about Geary probably need him for now but wont be around at his prime as others will take over as we improve. But drove 100 ks to go to the game today and loved the effort of the young guys.Sinclair came on late and had a couple of really good involvements.

Looking at Geary. The bloke cannot kick for peanuts. He misses uncontested targets consistently.
Did you see his embarrassing attempt from 40 today? That kicking is not of an AFL-standard player.
Re: Geary needs to have a big year
Highly rated within the 4 walls of the footy club.
Can argue to the cows come home.
Has to please his coach and teammates, not the fans.
First game back, I think it was a pass mark.
Cheers.

I agree. Too many mistakes.SainterK wrote:Delusional..The Redeemer wrote:Geary cannot kick at all and his 'set shot' from 40 illustrates this.
If he knows he is such a bad kick, why was he surprised he could not slot it through from 40?
Delist at the end of the year, awful kicking and somehow worse than Jones

He sprayed it, at a pivotal time, so did they.
He wanted to kick it, for Roo, made up for it moments later when he set up a goal with his inside 50.
Remember threads about "dumpster" back in the day.

Geary should be shot. He just keeps playing footy. I don't understand what the government is doing about it. Hird was chased away to France for less than he's done. Inexcusable all that crap stuff he did that I didn't see but heard about. He is obviously an umpire in his spare time too.

Have not said he is our worst.
Have said he has many strengths.....but like many have observed today that he again used the ball bady and that this is his achilles heel.
At his age he is more than ripe to step up...but will he? The area he basically has to improve is his ball use. The other aspects of his game are good.
The Saints have so many poor users of the ball that Geary is not all unusual. But our poor ball use is a key reason why we are cellar dwellers at the moment.
That Geary is rated amongst our better players at present is not that Geary is good, but that our list is bad. He would only be bottom 6 at any good club, and not in the 22 at the best clubs.
If I was a going to war, I would want him in my platoon! However I am looking forward to getting some better ball users into our team like Billings and and Webster. Geary'sgood qualaties will keep him in the 22 for a good while yet. But please, pretty please can our recruiters please start recruiting more players that can use the ball well.

Re: Geary needs to have a big year
Geary just strikes me as a kind of neutralising player, bit like Delaney. God knows we need them at the moment. But Delaney is playing on the gorilla power forwards so neutralising them is a big win. We need the qualities Geary's got at the moment - tough, leadership, defensive cover, brave, work rate, experience, run out of the back - I've heard he sets a great example at the club.
We're like a boxer in the corner being pounded on and Geary is that tough pair of gloves held up to our face to stop us being knocked out. But later down the track we are going to want to start throwing punches back and that's where I worry that Geary will find he's like that stage 1 rocket that did an important job to get us launched in the right direction but being discarded so we can get to the next level (apologies for the mixed metaphors). He needs to start lowering his eyes and start taking some chances with his kicking. He's too skinny to play key defender roles so he's going to find more and more competition for that rebounding backman role as the likes of Webster, Wright, McKenzie, Acres and the next few years draftees come through who have good kicking skills and vision.

I would say it's not ball use it's general list profile that lets us down. The age gaps and inexperience are too hard to cover.
Re: Geary needs to have a big year
Spot on SR. GWS only played about 3/4 of the intensity we played with but their class got them across the line. They put together much better possession chains with their kicking and quick hands.saintsRrising wrote:Not saying to drop him.matrix wrote:so had less clangers and a better disposal eff

Re: Geary needs to have a big year
Was at the game thought he did some nice things defensively but like others have pointed out his disposal was plain awful. It's his first game back in a while so maybe confidence is a factor but he's never been a great user of the ball and in today's game its paramount you can dispose of the footy cleanly. in time he will be replaced by Wright or Webster in that role anyways. Maybe he will get more of a midfield role but he's never going to be a star as he's an elite athlete first and a average footy player second. You cant carry too many of these guys anymore in the modern game.

Re: Geary needs to have a big year
Jarryn played loose man in defence all day, hence the number of his possessions. His job was to mop up and run the lines. He did both. Alas, his deficiencies have been around for years. Like so many of our players, he is really too small for the task set him. He needs to be the size of Brendon Goddard (who early on played the same role) and with the same set of skills. But he is not. We don't have any other alternative at the moment, so we just have to hope that his kicks go a little more to teammates and a little less to opponents, especially his opposite number in their backline.

Geary is so slow. I know he runs a good 3km but his 30m is treacle.
