Re: Hate blaming Umpires but ........
Just watching the first quarter. Nice double effort by the umpires.
GWS player goes for a diving chest mark which obviously touches the ground. Mark is paid. He gets up and kicks to Ward who gets his legs tangled with Roberton. 50m and an easy goal for the Giants.

Re: Hate blaming Umpires but ........
It does not matter why the umpiring went against us today, the fact is that it did...
A 10 free kick turnaround.. i.e. take 5 from GWS and give them to us so that we won the freekciks 25-20 instead of the other way around.. then we win
The Lonie/Dempster turnaround was crucial...
Decent effort by the saints and not good enough by the AFL if games rely on umpiring rather than effort and skill

Re: Hate blaming Umpires but ........
They might not be corrupt but that's almost worse. How many free kicks directly in front can they give? The Mc Carthy one when there didn't seem to be an incident at all compared to one where Rooey was punch in the head for no free was mystifying. The fact that no one noticed Rooey go down with the play on it was bizarre. So terrible.
Re: Hate blaming Umpires but ........
Im unsure what the AFL can do. They would pick the best 27 umpires to do games. Like footballers, some are very good and some aren't.SuperDuper wrote:It does not matter why the umpiring went against us today, the fact is that it did...

Re: Hate blaming Umpires but ........
There is big money on these games which should make the umpires more accountable for their performance EG Glaringly poor performance investigations (please forgo the gags about player investigations) and publish the results.

I thought they made errors. I think all umpires do. What I don't think is it is corruption and bias. That is plain illogical.
Then I remember you said that about performance enhancing drugs in the AFL once. Crims pay officials off in other sports. It will happen in the AFL maybe already does maybe they are s***.
I took some friends who are not footy followers just to show them our game. They couldn't understand why they were so biased. They didn't even know the rules. The amount of iffy ones in front of goal for them and the amount where our guys were driven into the ground after disposing of the ball was bizarre.

God knows how anyone who doesn't understand the game would know if they were biased or not. Maybe it was because the person next to them said it all the time. No idea what your first point even means.

well if they can't do better, then it is just a terrible sport then.... who wants to watch a sport where the rules are ambiguous and the umpires determine the winner?plugger66 wrote:Im unsure what the AFL can do. the buck stops with the AFL. They have a rules of the game committee that they appoint. They train the umpires.

Why cant we teach our players to be skilled like other sides? Because some just aren't up to it.

Re: Hate blaming Umpires but ........
Blaming umpires is loser talk.
We played like absolute s*** for three quarters.
In no way did we deserve to win. No way at all. If the Giants had of kicked even slightly better, then the game was over at the half.
Umpires were frustratingly poor, but what is new?
Threads like this one just scream LOSER.....

If it smells like $hit then it most likely is...being critical of any performance Umpire or Player is not "Loser talk" It is being subjective.bigred wrote:Blaming umpires is loser talk.

Taking into account the poor performance by the Umpires you may not have said we didn't deserve to win. I honestly believe we could have snatched that game but for the Umpiring. Bad kicking for goal is a separate issue which the players have control over.
No..not loser talk.

I suppose we are all delusional that Head and his other umpires favoured Fremantle during Whispers in the Sky?
It has happened before, but we are all delusional?
I dont know the two posters at bigfooty, and of course it could be BS, but it just part of the counter argument tothose who categorically defend umpire integrity.
However instead of arguing the point, you attempt to shut the argument down with a piss poor one liner.
As I said, cheap, but not unexpected shot from you.
Oh BTW, I dont believe the umpires were purposely biased today, but horribly inconsistent and terribly incompetent.
That No.25 is not up to AFL football, have said so for the past two seasons. Proved it again today.

For a start drop that No.25. He is out of his depth and not up to AFL standard. He has cost us in more than one game and I hate it when I see his number umpiring us as I know there will be controversy over the umpiring.plugger66 wrote:Im unsure what the AFL can do. So you honestly think that two umpires enjoy paying frees against the Saints for some incident that occurred in 2009. And they told two Saints supporters all about it.Bunk_Moreland wrote:Pretty poor cheap shot.kosifantutti wrote:Well it's nice to know that there are delusional posters at Bigfooty as well.Bunk_Moreland wrote:Over at bigfooty, two posters have reported that they have been told by both umpires Meredith and Ryan that they like to let frees against the Saints slide due to what Scneider did in 2009.bergholt wrote:Did anyone claim that? Well Saad played the whole game for 3 possessions. Im sure he is in the best 27 this week. Maybe we just cant get enough good umpires. Our club cant get enough good players. There are less and less umpires doing local comps so that means less and less better umpires for the AFL. They have tried to do something about it by getting ex players to umpire. They cant force umpires to be better. Im sure they train them as best as they can.

Re: Hate blaming Umpires but ........
Quite simply, the Lonie, Dempster issue had a huge bearing in the result. A 2 goal turn around in aprox 30 seconds. It cant be argued against. Whether the decisions were correct or not is a different story, but the IMPACT of those 2 decisions was massive.
My personal view is both were frees. The second one wouldn't have happened if the more obvious free was paid to Lonie 10 yards from goal to bring the margin back to 2 points, and the momentum heading all one way.

That's the thing...we can drop a player for having a an adverse effect on our game to a small degree but one umpire can have a much larger impact. Good or bad the thing that worries the most is lopsided mistakes by the Ump. Glaringly obvious frees paid when there is no infringement along with glaringly ridiculous ignored frees when there is an infringement to the one side. The booing of the crowd for a large part of the game gives some credence to that. Pay the Umps more to entice better talent ? .As I said earlier big money is wagered on these games so the AFL needs to address this asap.plugger66 wrote:

Paying umpires more wont get better umpires because it starts with junior footy and they cant afford to pay them more.

Re: Hate blaming Umpires but ........
I disagree Plugger - If the incentive is there to make a profession from Umpiring, more kids will see it as a viable choice instead of sitting out the sport. If you have a greater pool to choose from you have more chance of getting better umpires (I know that when I was umpiring (in the 80's) it was for fun and there was no thought as to making a serious living from it), or do you believe that the paying of players now results in more inferior players now than say 30 years ago. True the superstars of 30 years ago may be as good as todays superstars, but the average player now is better than that of the 80's.plugger66 wrote:The Fireman wrote:That's the thing...we can drop a player for having a an adverse effect on our game to a small degree but one umpire can have a much larger impact.
