Brilliant news. Love the way Jack playes and love that we have finally kept something worth keeping.

The temptation to go somewhere else and start playing finals would have been strong. Its going to be really tough for the next few years and great to see him willing to be in the trenches. It's a reflection that there is a good vibe at the club and players know the club is going in the right direction and want to be a part of building something special.
After Rooey, Jack is the the face of the club - young, fresh faced, energetic - so I think they would have thrown a lot at him. I'm guessing they front loaded his contract to tempt him with a big lump of money early. That then frees up some of our salary cap in a couple of years if/when we go after a free agent or two. That would also explain risking a 5 year contact on a guy who has struggled with serious foot problems stopping him getting out on the ground for extended periods the last couple of seasons.
Unfortunately due to his less than stellar kicking I'm not sure Jack will every truly be elite but he'll still be a damn good player with his pace and energy and ball getting ability.
Greg Denham whose mail IMO is sometimes poor said it was a 700K a year contract. Surely if that's the case its front loaded but its still an unbelievable amount. And I reckon his kicking is good when he can steady before he kicks it. Its improving every year.
I agree he can kick well it's just he's usually broken away before kicking and is at full pace. His value in FA is probably around that but he's been a low paid player in the last few years so he deserves it. Hopefully mostly front loaded. The old commodore and op shop clothes might get an upgrade now.
My daughter said the same thing about the op shop clothes.

I don't think we will make a guy with under 50 games skipper.

To me Newnes looks more like a Captain, he is very professional. Dunstan is a nice guy but doesn't have the same front as Newnes.

Write up ( 3 columns) on Jack's signing by Greg Denham in today's OZ................. also mentions that Ameet Bains said the Saints would deal with their other free agents - Sam Gilbert, Sean Dempster, Sam Fisher and Adam Schneider - later in the year.magnifisaint wrote:hasnt rated a mention in the papers except the herald scum under the saints page

I doubt we'll have much trouble hanging onto the others. I doubt there will be any interest. We're looking good from a list management perspective. We don't have to spend to retain. Let's get on the front foot, join the modern trend of list building, and get some experienced and FA talent in at the end of this year.
I started with nothing and I've got most of it left!

Do you think it maybe a year to early for a FA. The youngest you can normally get them at is 26 years of age and that means they will probably be about 29 when we are even a slight chance for the finals. We need FA and if the offer is to good to refuse we have to take it but I would probably wait another year.

He's worth keeping long term. Its a good deal.
Newnes will be next captain IMO....after this season it will be a no brainer.

A fantastic deal. He's in for the long haul. He's obviously happy with being at the club. Now he can focus on his footy.bigred wrote:He's worth keeping long term. Its a good deal.

The rise and rise of Newnes will be great to watch.

Crazy given the song and dance made over James Brayshaw 'extending'. The bloke has never played a game and was contracted for 2016 anyway. Which makes it a non-story.
Jack is a B&F winner and was un-contracted for 2016 - making it genuine news.
Re: Jack Steven recommits
I think people have simply forgot about him, how good he was...
May he remind them all this year.

I reckon it should be huge news if james Brayshaw extends his contract at Melbourne.

Greg Denham said 700K first year. I reckon just under 3 million for 5 years. Reasonable pay if you can get it.
