Re: Hamstrings - What's Going On
Kosi said his time ended early because they expect the players to run at above 35 kms ph while they are on the ground for more than half the time. Something like that anyway. It seems ridiculous that all players are expected to constantly gut run with no compromise, it destroys bodies- especially young ones and makes it impossible for some to ever make it who could otherwise contribute. The players are bulking ridiculously quickly too which happened at Essendon when they had a raft of STIs too. Maybe don't try to get an 18 yo to have an AFL ready body in 3 months. We should let them develop in the 2nds for a year before playing unless they are so obviously ready you can't leave them out.

The problem with that though is players is players weigh less than they did 5 years ago. I think it is just bad luck to be honest. In previous seasons it has been some older players get injured and this year its both young and old. And it seems injury numbers haven't increased anyway according to the AFL. Just more and more media so every injury gets reported. And there is no doubt there are better fitness advisors at some clubs. We had a beauty a few years ago.

Hamstrings and woe for Saints
Lyall Johnson | April 22, 2007
The Age
ST KILDA coach Ross Lyon last night lamented a 31-point loss to Essendon and yet another hamstring injury, this time to defender Sam Fisher, as he said the club's fitness regime could be to blame.
Lyon was also baffled by the decision to leave the Telstra Dome roof open during a rainstorm, ensuring a wet and slippery surface.
"It's interesting, isn't it? It's interesting to walk in at 12 o'clock and see the rain coming down and the roof's not shut. I suppose you have to look at the aim and the agenda of clubs and the stadium and the AFL, what you want to produce, I suppose what sort of spectacle."
It is believed that ground officials notified the AFL, which decides on the closure of the roof, of approaching rain more than two hours before the 2.10pm start. A decision to close it was made at about 1pm.
AFL spokesman Patrick Keane was unaware of the issue, but said the incident would likely be brought up in the AFL's weekly review.
Fisher left the field in the second quarter and the extent of his injury is not known. In recent years, the club has had plenty of hamstring injuries.
Lyon said their new fitness expert, Peter Mulkearns, had gone over previous fitness regimes and found an important component was missing. When pressed, Lyon said the actual thing missing was the humble squat exercise.
"The meat and potatoes is there hasn't been much squatting in the program. Meat and potatoes, that's what's missing ? it's a basic. You can laugh, but if you're not doing it under the extreme forces of AFL footy, something's going to give and it seems to be the hamstring."
Essendon's Jason Winderlich was a late withdrawal with a hamstring injury, while Leroy Jetta will miss Wednesday's Anzac Day clash due to a groin injury. David Hille, who took a knock to the chest, is in doubt.
Lyon played down the hard spoil on Luke Ball by Dustin Fletcher that left Ball prone. "It wasn't a great kick to him, was it? ? he was cleared to play; he wasn't concussed. He'll be better for the run."
I started with nothing and I've got most of it left!

Re: Hamstrings - What's Going On
Its still yet another hammy twang before the main season proper has even started. I think we've pushed really hard with preseason training pushing the boundaries to try and get an edge. The big worry is that we need to be getting games into Saunders, Ross, Savage etc to see 1) if they have the goods to stay on the list and 2) get the necessary experience and hardness to start to take over the reigns to cover the huge amount of experience leaving in the next few years. A review of preseason is in order before next preseason. Maybe a little bit of rust is better than burning out before the main season has even started.Dr Spaceman wrote:Saunders.Bunk_Moreland wrote:Who?8856brother wrote:Bump

Suggestion on BF, by someone with reasonable form, that Armo may have also done his hammy. Waiting on scans as it may be tendon related. WTF.

I was speaking to a Saints person on Sunday, not a player, and he said any tendon related hamstring is totally unlucky. It has nothing to do with the amount of training you do. I think I posted something like that previously so before you again knock the club maybe you should get some facts. First fact it could be again a made up conspiracy and secondly if its tendon related it isn't training procedures. Better to lay the boots in though than using actual facts.

P66 is correct re tendon related hammy's. If Armo's has a tendon related hammy wouldn't that make three (with two hammy tears)/
Unfortunately that is just really bad luck. Without the tendon issues it would mean only two hammy's done which is pretty standard.
Anyways, we have Saunders available for R1 apparently and Armo is only a rumour, o lets just calm down a bit.

Saunders belongs at Sandringham anyway, he plays like a headless chook - similar to Shenton.

Re: Hamstrings - What's Going On
Agree with Saunders - Shenton not so much. What strikes me with these marginal players is they seem to get confused between what is there natural movement or style to what are the team rules. Saunders often looks confused and in two minds when he has the ball, which leads to him making disposal errors. Im surprised his coaches havent identified this and tried to clear his thinking...#gosaintas wrote:Saunders belongs at Sandringham anyway, he plays like a headless chook - similar to Shenton.

Btw Brian speaking is the bloke who said armo was injured. But I think a) he was winding up fellow posters and b) he isn't very credible anymore

Re: Hamstrings - What's Going On
Unfortunately, when it comes to good spatial awareness and attention-paying strategies, the science tends to show you've either got it or you haven't, and that it's hard to improve either, if you can at all. Pendlebury, Dal Santo, Robert Harvey etc. have it in spades, but their like are exceptions, of course. Young Joshy and the Panther don't. They will always struggle under pressure, as most do. From what I've seen, Billings, Dunstan and Acres look pretty good in the traffic, as does Newnes. Josh needs to work hard on his strengths and using them for the team. He brings outside run and much needed pace, but his disposal is less than acceptable ATM. He's still got time, but with the likes of Lonie, the surprising Sinclair (like the look of him), Dunstan, Billings and Templeton, he has serious competition for his spot. At this stage, he's at the rear of that queue. IMHO, of course.WinnersOnly wrote:Agree with Saunders - Shenton not so much.
