Where was Billings?

I've never seen a bad St.Kilda player - that's just how they are.

Most positive was Bruce up forward. A negative was Bruce up forward decision making. Lonie looks skilled. The forwards are going to get a cold if we get that little possession. Joey looks slower and less skilled by the game. Fisher looks good. Not sure if that's a negative or a positive.

I thought that was a pretty good game for our first hit outs. Plenty of positives and excitement to come out of it:

POSITIVES

McCartin - just...looked...good. Leading hard, hitting packs, pushing up to the centre and half back to open up space. He looks the real deal and a real competitor. On the scoreboard already
Lonie - shows real skills and creativity. A really nice crumbing goals and combines well with other forwards who will love having him out there
Acres - showed he knows how to read the game but was a bit slow with it. I'm not panicking because when he catches up to the speed of AFL I think he'll rip it up with his vision
Ross - could be the new diesel William with his handballing.
Newnes - his fitness is letting to get around the ground in a lot in damaging positions
Bruce - was a great target forward and a physical presence so the defenders don't get cocky
Backline - Dempster, Fisher, Geary, Delaney, Shenton worked really well together. Even though they are not the future they should keep us competitive this year
Membrey- two goals I think which is a damn solid start. He doesn't seem tall enough for a leading forward but seems to find space.
Saad - it felt good to see him back out there and he played well with a nice goal and hard chasing. Can't rest on his laurels though - needs to be a fierce competitor all year.

NEGATIVES

Savage - lacked poise and good decision making. In a couple of marking situations he saw shadows coming and took his eye off it which is a real worry.
Lee - just not sure where he fits in - doesn't really seem a leading forward but doesn't pull in contested pack marks. Worked hard but not real impact
Billings - injury a worry
Newnes and Ross' kicking - both their kicking is not at the level needed to be really damaging mids. No point winning it if you give it away. Need to work really hard on it.
Clearances - our lack of ability to get first hands on it is a real worry. It worries me we rely too much on Armo who gets guys hanging off him. Although with Dunny back, Steven a full game and Billings maybe coming back might tilt it a bit.

Anyway very early doors yet but that's filled me with some real hope and excitement. Well done lads. I'm really looking forward to seeing McCartin, Lonie, Acres, Templeton, Dunny, Billings (hopefully!) develop this year. And if Goddard and McKenzie can get a Guernsey it will be really exciting times.

If he was actually limping im going more than that. Tightness wouldn't really mean a limp especially that early in the game.

Or according to the commentators, not there at all. Might have had a tummy upset before the game.

Only NAB Cup and all but I hate it when we lose close games, especially when we have the ascendency.

When was the last time we won a game by a goal or less because I can't remember winning too many close games since the 2009 Preliminary Final.

Off topic, but who was the genius who decided to shorten the bank's name to NAB, which means to steal.

The Saints were outplayed for portions of the match but never went away, and were running over the Lions in the final quarter, with midfielders David Armitage (28 touches), Jarryn Geary (25) and Leigh Montagna (23) getting plenty of ball.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

St Kilda: While they might lack a little polish, you'll get plenty of pluck from the Saints this season. The midfield has the makings of a solid combination, with David Armitage, Leigh Montagna and Jack Newnes performing strongly to go alongside the classy Jack Steven. They have terrific endeavour, and even with the Lions trying to move the ball quickly, were rarely able to with the Saints' pressure. Paddy McCartin and Tim Membrey showed enough up forward.

I was impressed by McCartin. Looked at home.
Membrey was good. I know Saints supporters, well footy fans in general, don't sing but when we play Sydney "Thanks for Tim Membrey" would go well.
Bruce was good up forward in the last quarter especially but just used it really poorly.
Newnes was impressive again.
Saad had a lot of energy but didn't get a lot of it. Starved of opportunity?
Lonie impressed when he got the ball in his hands.

I was looking forward to seeing Acres but he barely touched it.
Longer still doesn't get the ball. Holmes showed him how to take a mark in the last quarter.
Savage just fumbled a lot and made poor decisions.

Think you just about summed it up perfectly. What do we do with Longer. he can ruck but that's where his game ends. He needs to work harder to get into some space. I didn't even know Acres played.
