Give it ago but might need some help

B: Dawson, S Wakelin, Shanahan
HB: Carr, D Wakelin Guerra
C: McAdam, Simpson, Black
HF: J Smith Hall, Lappin
F:O'Brien, Lockett, T Lynch
Foll: Everitt, Ball, Fletcher

Int: D Grant, Sierokowski, Winmar, Gwilt

Tried to do it based on what they did elsewhere hence Winmar on the bench

Couple stand outs to me that didn't really get a go and went to to do well were Sean Simpson ( Geelong) and Matthew Carr ( Freo)
Dean Rice? I am eternally bemused by Carr. Was a spud with us IMO. Then he goes back to Freo and all of a sudden he's in the midfield?! Some sort of magical thing transformed him. Never liked him for some reason.

I'll have a go at this one as well, but I reckon the right way to do it is by how good they were overall not just what they did elsewhere, so my team might be a bit different to yours.

FB: Grant, Shanahan, D Wakelin
HB: Goddard, Maguire, Lappin
C: Winmar, Ball, Clarke
HF: McAdam, Hall, J Smith
FF: Owen, Lockett, O'Brien
R: Everitt, Dal Santo, Fletcher
IC: McEvoy, Guerra, Black, Dwyer/Rice/Begley

Others: Dawson, McLaren, Devonport, McQualter, Sziller, Daniels, S Wakelin, Sierakowski, Jeffrey, Lamb, Craven, Manning, Carr, Evans, Wittey, Allen, Cripps, Dargie, Cranage, Simpson, Hilton, Lynch, Heppell, Dipetta, Atkinson, Doyle

Pretty solid side. Would definitely beat the first side by a lot, mainly because of the top-end guys: Plugger, Nicky, Dal, BJ, Spider. Pretty volatile forward line with Owen and O'Brien next to Plugger - not to mention BBBH at CHF!

Just leave Dwyer and Begley off and it's an incredible looking side.
If it can't fit Dawson, Sziller, Dwyer in it has to be a pretty good team.

If you're going to include blokes like David Grant, Nicky Winmar and Xavier Clarke who did bugger all after leaving us you have to consider in the other team, Brian Wilson, Damien Monkhorst, Tony Francis etc who didn't do much at St Kilda but had decent careers before that.

Stevie it was something to do with an eye issue. There was once an in-depth interview done with him here in Perth on ABC radio.

He supposedly always had some difficulties with his eyes throughout his life, even as a child. Can't exactly recall too much now about the interview went, but was something along these lines:

It related to balance, out of focus, unable to concentrate. There was no pattern to his problem, would re-occur randomly. At times for a few minutes in a game, then go away. Other times it lasted for days. Some times it would be 3 or 4 months before he had problems. It appears Saints medico's were more focussed on neurological testing for him........ that turned up nought.

It was a Freo eye specialist that diagnosed the actual problem after Carr was referred to him by some optician who detected some abnormality with his sight. This eye specialist had recently returned from years doing further studies in the USA in 'cutting edge' eye diseases. It seems Carr was the first person to have this radical surgery on his eyes (whatever the problem was) in Aus and bingo - rectified his problems.

It appears Carr was an enigma in his school years. At times being labelled slow with his learning, due to comprehension problems and lack of interest; however, there were times when he was a top rate very motivated student. Then you guess what happened.....school teachers gave up on him..... put it down as an attitude problem.

Likewise he said he was very up and down with his sporting endeavours. Top participant, across all sports, but then could be the weakest member of the team for no apparent reason............... again coaches had him down as talented, but attitude not right.

Also he said he wasn't a confident out-going type of kid, like his younger brother so he just accepted that was the way he was. Case of label a person enough and after a time they will adopt that persona.

He reckoned these series of eye operations changed his whole life around.... his football became consistent, his social skills improved & he had returned to studying with success at the time of that interview.

It's a bit like some young children being labelled as slow learners or dumb.... then eventually parents listen to advice and get the child's hearing or sight comprehensively tested and find that is where the problem often lies, not their child's intelligence. Luckily this doesn't happen as much these days as primary school teachers are more trained to pick up these issues and get children referred on quickly before it becomes a major learning or behavioural problem.

For awhile in Perth, Carr was the poster boy for lazar eye treatment, always jumping out at you in ads. Though he did say in this interview, it wasn't simple lazar surgery he had to correct near or far sightedness he had done................... it's just that he was approached to do ads for lazar treatment.

So Stevie, by all accounts that's why Carr stopped being a spud after he left the Saints.

Cheers loris. Interesting story! By the way, did Dr Vidovic do the 'lazar' surgery on him?

This thread is a pretty good example of why we're dreaming if we think we're in with a shot of landing a big fish thru either free agency of a trade. This 25 years of history proves we struggle to entice great players to our club, while losing great players at fairly regular intervals.

I would argue that only 2 players in the list of players coming to St Kilda were starting 18 players at their previous clubs, Gehrig and Hamill. Maybe Hickey at a stretch...

While half of the list of deserters were starting 18 at St Kilda when they left (Goddard, Dal Santo, Gwilt, The Wakelins, Lockett, Hall, Dawson, Lappin, .....etc.) and plenty of them would have been in the Top 10 at the time.

If we're employing specialised staff to identify and aquire talent from other clubs, they should know they are working against history to have any success!!!

Shane Wakelin was delisted I think but you are right about the past. No idea what that has to do with the future though. We will get a good FA if we do it at the right time. Unless we improve at the end of this year is still to early. By the way think Powell and Schneider were pretty regular players.

A bit harsh on a few there. Without doing any research I would say that Schneider, Dempster, Ray, Fletcher, Black, Guerra, Powell and Fiora were all pretty close to or in the best 18.
