DYLAN Roberton is emerging as the player to watch at St Kilda in 2015 after stacking on five kilos and dramatically improving his running ability.

The change in the 23-year-old backman's size and fitness after an injury-affected 2014 has prompted coach Alan Richardson to dub him as being "like a new player".

And, fellow defender Jarryn Geary has predicted the former Docker will take on more of a key role next season with his increased versatility.

"Robbo is like a new player in many ways. His running has improved significantly," Richardson told AFL.com.au.

"He had a pretty frustrating year last year. He had an ankle that was giving him a fair bit of grief and he lost a fair degree of movement.

"He needed to be able to cope with the fact he was different because of that injury and needed to adjust.

"He's probably one of the most impressive trainers we've had, and he actually hasn't really joined in with our group yet.

"He's in really good shape and it's quite exciting to think he's almost a new player for us."

It is something I'm interested in, [being in the leadership group]," Ross told AFL.com.au.

"It would be something I would really need to work on.

"I'm not one to really get up in front of the group and make a big speech but I think I try and show leadership with my actions and how hard I work but it's definitely something I want to aspire to."

Shortly before the Saints broke for the festive season, coach Alan Richardson challenged the likes of Ross, Jack Newnes and Tom Curren to be the difference in the team's performance next season

All are performing well this pre-season and have been recording solid results in the time trials and at the pre-season camps.

Along with increasing his leadership, Ross wants to make sure he capitalises on the inroads he made as an inside midfielder in 2014.

PADDY McCartin knows he could not find a better role model than Nick Riewoldt.

St Kilda snared McCartin with pick No.1 in last year's NAB AFL Draft, ultimately preferring the Geelong Falcons key forward to Eastern Ranges midfield bull Christian Petracca.

The Saints' decision was influenced, in part, by the need to groom a forward-line successor to Riewoldt.

Riewoldt, 32, has been one of his generation's best key forwards and, despite battle-scared knees and the Saints' poor 2014 season, was named All Australian last year for the fifth time.

No tall forward has ever worked harder than the Saints skipper, whose trademark up-and-back leads have run opponents into the ground for more than a decade.

ST KILDA wingman Jack Newnes is on a mission to add size to his frame between now and round one to help him compete as an inside midfielder.

Newnes, who was one of only four Saints to play every game last year, has been earmarked for a greater midfield role in 2015 after developing at half-back and on a wing.

The 21-year-old has grown from 76kg in 2012 to 82kg this summer, and he is hopeful a meticulous gym program will help him play at close to his ideal weight in his fourth season.

"The aim is to get right in the guts, and ideally I'd be at 84kg to play an inside role," Newnes told AFL.com.au.

"I'm hoping as the intra-clubs and NAB Cup games start coming on it'll be a bit easier to put weight on because you're not just sweating and running it all off.

"I've put on about 1kg (this pre-season) and hopefully I can get to the 83kg mark before round one."

After the departure of champion Saint Lenny Hayes last year, Newnes said new midfield leaders were emerging and he was looking to Armitage and Steven for guidance.

Viewed by Hayes as a future captain of the club, Newnes has also grown as a leader this pre-season, with 20 players on the list younger than him.

"I'm trying to be a bit more vocal and lead with my actions this pre-season," he said.

"I'm only in my fourth year, but there's a lot of young blokes below me, so it's time to step up a little bit," he said.

Leg infections, specifically cellulitis, are a common thing amongst diabetics. They are usually fairly harmless, but they must be captured and treated early to prevent a spread into the lymphatic system. I'm sure Paddy's dealt with them before. No great cause for alarm by the sound of things.
