Draft Notes...from the Redeemers' Eyes and Ears...
1. We wanted Goddard from the get-go. Richo made this abundantly clear pre-draft. Goddard can both ends of the ground and is seen as someone who can become a swingman but actually do both jobs well.
2. Richo also stated that we are/were going to choose the best available tall (which gave it away). He also stated that we were drafting for 'needs' compared to 'best available'
2. Tom Lamb's best and worst are too great in a gap. This is probably why he slipped.
3. Gillion was direct in stating that the Giants always wanted to get rid of Tom Boyd. He has an attitude problem and if all the Giants key talls are fit, Boyd is last in the pecking order. Furthermore, the Giants rate Cameron McCarthy as the best of them all which really says something!
4. Gillion also stated that the consensus was that the best tall should be selected over the best small. To quote Clarkson via text "pick up mids with latter picks but draft the best tall if possible"
5. The Eagles wanted to move Worsfold on after the 2010 season.

6. The market for talls re Free Agency is light (Gillion). Hence why we probably drafted talls with the benefit of hindsight.

Good work Redeemer.
If we take a step back. 9 months ago we were weighing up Goddard OR McCartin.
9 months on to have them both (without trading out a big name or receiving a priority pick) has to be a bloody good result.
Who knows we might end up with 2 top tenners next year.

I chatted with both Richardson and Gillon prior to the Draft beginning last night.

Richo also said the next draft is light on for talls and will get mids next year .
Really liked both Mccartin and petracca, we won't be disappointed and thinks will be the best fwd in 5 years.
Also stated that mckernan hasn't don't enough yet but very happy with Petrenko
Mcglachlan did show us a text from Alistair clarkson cause we were saints men..
Richo still thought Goddard was top 10 and they were hoping Tom lamb was going to slide a bit more as he has huge positives but he has massive negatives. They would have picked Lamb if we didn't get Goddard but had to take Goddard and thought there was a chance he may slide but if he didn't Tom lamb was it. Perhaps didn't take Lamb as we had 2 talls already so got Mckenzie, obviously Lamb wasn't available at pick 41
Not sure who tey would get as FA in 2 years as there isn't many good young talks worthwhile so want to develop our own.
Gws were happy to clear Boyd
Off their list and get compensation in the meantime
This was all pre draft info, not sure what their thoughts were after but they got who they wanted pre draft so I assume their ecstatic

They weren't so keen when we offered pick one. I think they are saving face.

McKenzie (22) v Lamb (32) will be one we might discuss over the years.
Lets hope we have a win on that choice!

Re: Draft Notes...from the Redeemers' Eyes and Ears...
That may be so....but until the Blues surprising wasted their pick 19 taking a player that they could have easily gained later in the draft, and who was the ONLY mature age player in the draft, we were never going to get Goddard. The Redeemer wrote:1. I am delighted that of the 3 tall defenders that he was the last man standing. I would have been less happy with the shorter Machbank.
PS: all the Blues fans I know are mortified over their first pick. The Blues are all about results next year and have added a lot of younish players with question marks over their game with their only advantage being that they are all ready to play next year. Drafting and trading in mainly smokies is a very high risk strategy.

Hear me out. If we were never going to get Goddard, why did Richo talk at length without being pushed or pressured into who we wanted? Or at least have any idea of our chances re. getting him?saintsRrising wrote:That may be so....but until the Blues surprising wasted their pick 19 taking a player that they could have easily gained later in the draft, and who was the ONLY mature age player in the draft, we were never going to get Goddard. The Redeemer wrote:1.
