Draftees 2014

Draftees 2014
pick 1: Patrick McCartin; 194cm, 94kg; Geelong Falcons
pick 21: Hugh Goddard; 196cm, 94kg; Geelong Falcons
pick 22: Daniel McKenzie; 183cm, 77kg; Oakleigh Chargers
pick 41: Jack Lonie; 174cm, 67kg; Dandenong Stingrays
Personally I thought we should be focusing on midfielders. We ended up with 1 out of 4 so obviously the club disagreed.
McCartin is a key forward who can't play anywhere else, let's hope he turns out to be big enough for AFL.
Goddard is a swingman-type who's apparently best as a defender, so that's a fine pick given our lack of young backs.
McKenzie is athletic and an elite kick, sounds like a back flanker-type, not necessarily a guy who'll run all day in an AFL midfield. Hopefully that develops.
Lonie is a specialist small forward with a tiny frame. I'm not at all convinced by picking a player like that even at 41. I hope I'm wrong.
Overall, looks like a set of picks which are pretty hard to love. Probably none of them will have much impact next year, maybe McKenzie will play some games but the others look like they need to develop. This draft is going to take a long time to pay off.

Re: Draftees 2014
Maybe you are being a little harsh here.
McCartin will be great if he can match it with the big defenders in the AFL, outmark them and kick goals. He doesn't need to play any else but on the forward line.
He was picked as the main replacement for Roo. He is a fine young man with a good attitude. Let's hope he lives up to his billing.
Goddard was a slider and a real steal for us. A big bodied defender who is exactly what we need. Put Darcy Moore out of business in a TAC game. No mean feat.
McKenzie is the midfielder who can run all day. Came into his own at the pointy end of the TAC season. BOG in the Grand Final. Tested elite in everything at the combine. Good mark and kick.
Jack Lonie is a little ripper. Smart, quick, elusive small forward not unlike Caleb Daniel. We were crying out for someone like him and now we have got that kind of player.
All in all we done pretty good. Let's welcome all of them to the Saints and hope they help win us a flag !

Re: Draftees 2014
McCartin looks big enough to play seniors next year, though maybe not all the time, maybe 11-15 games depending on how he goes.
Hopefully next year we'll see Spencer White build on his first two games, more from Dunstan and Billings, plus see what Acres can do.
At best I see 5 wins next year, so we are going to have high draft picks next year as well.
I am happy with who we got, and remember key forwards are hard to find, midfielders are bountiful and sometimes with midfielders you can find a diamond in the rough.

People that follow the draft pretty closely seem rapt…
We took 5 mids last year & will probably stock up again next year, at some stage you need to fill the other spots.
Goddard is a huge bargain at 21.

Re: Draftees 2014
McCartin seems a very nice and level headed kid. At least we don't need to worry about him being a d**khead. His parents were vey pleasant. Goddard for Stanley. That's a pretty fair swap in my view. Lonie's highlights were the best of all four recruits and no doubt we all saw a bit of S. Milne about they way he plays. Did you notice he didn't miss a target with any of his kicks? As for McKenzie, he has speed AND a great leap, a combination I can't find in any current Saints player.
I know some people have some negative opinions, but if our recruiters performed as well as last year, then we'll be in good position in 3 years

Not many big guys play 15 games in their first year! I'd be surprised if he played 5.3rd generation saint wrote:McCartin looks big enough to play seniors next year, though maybe not all the time, maybe 11-15 games depending on how he goes.

At some point we needed to get genuine big guys contributing to the rebuild.
McCartin & Goddard arrive together from the same club. Both have genuine potential and wont we be rapt if they can realise it. I like the look of McKenzie & Lonie and if these 4 can complement the other 'recent arrivals' from 2013 & '14 we'll hopefully start generating some excitement.
Glad Spud is back at the club and keen to help out AR with the development of the young guys. He's an old head who could help our new guys down back.
The St Kilda rebuild is starting to look a lot more solid.
GO SAINTS!

The boy can play and we can build a defence around him that will have respect.

according to SEN, Milney had been down to dandenong stingrays to help out the small forwards, fugazi wrote:Love the Lonie highlights...so much Milney there, very cheeky.

Re: Draftees 2014
I don't mind the selection of Lonie. Bit of class with the left foot in the highlights. Can only hope for him and billings doing some damage across half forward and up the field together. I havent seen any of our draftees play, however from the Highlights, McCartin doesn't seem to get great separation from opponents.. Not necessarily a bad thing and as he has stated he's tried to model some of his game on Hawkins who doesn't get great separation either and and able to use strength in a contest. Just mean kicking to advantage helps a lot (not like we've butchered to Roo over the years)
Goddard looks like he will become a handy player. A slider according to those who know more than me and I think we were a bit surprised he was still there. I can see him mounting numerous counter attacks with intercept marks and quick hand to foot for a big bloke. I still think Bruce will end up a back as well which will leave us strong for bigs defensively.
The one i'm not totally sold on is McKenzie, happy to be eating humble pie by the slices, just think he'll be an ok player. Not the calibre of others in the team when push comes to shove in 4-5 years time.. Would have loved Laverde to slide one more pick too..
Be mindful the big boys - McCartin, White, Goddard, Bruce, Hickey, Longer are probably still 4-5 years away from anything significant, so i'm excited to see them develop over the next few years with a few 'break out' games and moments.. such as the Freo game this seaosn. Remember how much 'Tomahoawk' copped it for 3,4,5 years.
