At least midfielders esp pretrecca are ready to play straight away so would be a lot less risky than a big forward.
Would have preferred 4 and 7 if Mc cartin was avail at 4 but the saints must have got info that melb was taking him.

Under absolutely no situation should a coach influence a decision like that!

the 4 and 7 for 1 is a s*** trade...
If 1 is no sure thing, surely the risk gets higher and higher with 4 and 7.
We can select who we want with 1. No hoping, no guessing who will fall. Not many chances to do that each year. Will probably get one next year too but might not...

this is the crucial point.
So far as I know, Richo is not the top dog during recruiting...
He would be consulted, and if he gave his opinion, the Pelican and trout would know that he also knows Petracca. They made the call with this knowledge.... it is not Richo's call.
They must rate Petracca very highly... 4+7 for 1+21 is a decent offer... (I still believe we had to give back 21... right?? That is what Jaxons indicated)
let's hope we made the right call

I get what you're saying but that works both ways...Con Gorozidis wrote:Who would you preferskeptic wrote:I would prefer pick 1 to 4 & 7 by a long way
Tom Boyd or both Bontempelli & Aish?
I am satisfied we made a good decision but I dont think its absolutely utterly clear cut. There is a fair bit of uncertainty in this years draft meaning taking pick 1 seemed prudent. Time will tell.
there are plenty of misses in the top 7 over the years and most pick 1s whilst not necessarily being the best player are usually at least AFL caliber picks
there is a clear stand out this year
personally, I feel like people are so fixated on the number of picks to build the list vthat the overall point is being missed which is to get the best players
in this case I don't think the gain of that trade outweighs the loss
the best pick for 2 not as good propositions
if it was three picks sure but at 2 I just don't think it's worth it

You all keep forgetting they offered us picks 4 & 7 but wanted pick 21 back.
They never offered 4 & 7 only.
Alan knows the Petracca family, not well, I assure you it has nothing to do with him getting selected, if anything it has Petracca having to impress more to get it over the line.
It is not Alan Richardson's decision either who gets picked.
He coaches the team that the recruiting department put together.
Some of the garbage on this site is insane.

I think even if they had traded 1 for 4 and 7 some fans would have cracked it anyway. To exchange pick one the offer would have to be unmissable just to sell back to the members.

if Wright plays like Tippett I don't want him. Goes missing against good sides, does Kurt. I want Petracca anyway.

Hi CW, if it's true that your current speculation successfully shirt-fronted your previous rumour, then Richo has just gone up a couple more notches in my estimation...citywest wrote:My rumour would have been right if it wasn't for Richo. You can take that to the bank.
And if Paige's 'plays like' assessments are correct, then Richo goes up yet a few more notches again.citywest wrote:Paige Cardona's Phantom Draft.... This is what we could have had but obviously Petracca is better than both of them combined.
Pick 4: Greater Western Sydney – Peter Wright - Plays like: Kurt Tippett
Pick 7: Greater Western Sydney – Paul Ahern - Plays like: Dale Thomas
Despite off-loading Rhys, we don't need another player like Wright. Also, word has it that he already has back issues. If true, and given his height, that would be bad news for both Peter and his longevity in the game. (Hopefully Ahern's ankles are better than Daisy's.)
CW. I reckon that you'll end up very happy with our having kept the number one pick. I'm very confident that our Christian will be comfortably better than both those two... combined.
Also, don't forget that the Wogans were only offering 4&7, not 4,6&7, and that those clowns also wanted our Pick 21 as well... so your rumour would have been off the money by a small (but significant) bit anyway.
CW, I reckon you'll see a flag (at least one) before you chalk-up your 50 year anniversary. Keep the faith.
Edit: I've just noticed that whilst I was tapping-out this post, jaxons has posted mentioning that actual offer from the Wogans.

I am happy we didn't do the deal but….
Wasn't Jaxons saying 4,6 & 7 for 1 & 21 the eve of the final day of trading and that we were trying to keep 21? Or was that more how the deal would have to be?

And in the future no one can say we made a mistake if draft picks 4 & 7 end up being the best players in the comp simply because our picks MAY have been different from their picks. So no future comparisons are valid. It would just be hearsay or gossip.
As ex-president Peter Summers said:
“If we are going to be a contender, we may as well plan to win the bloody thing.”

Exactly. Always laugh when people say this club got a certain player for the pick traded. The only way we will know if its a bad move is if Petracca isn't up to it or is just an average 100 game player in the Scully mould.

My brother in law knows both Richardson and the Petracca family does that mean he has been involved also.
It is just as strong an argument.
The reality is that Richardson may well know the Petracca family and that may have influence on the decision but only as far as him stating that he has a really good solid background, which is important.
