Of course it's a win. Not a big one, but certainly not a fail. Maybe could've done better, who knows?

Fail.
It was odd to trade our one ruckman who can go forward, and draft another mid-size forward.
We failed to get Boyd and failed to convert pick 1 into multiple picks.
I can't see a win anywhere. The only consolation we have is that we kept the first pick.

Didn't Finnis say we would be "VERY ACTIVE" in this trade period.
Hate to see it when we are taking it easy...
Compared to most other bottom clubs.. id have to say FAIL!!

Traded a fringe player for an end of first round pick. Win
Go to the draft with Pick 1. Win
Along with 21 and 22. Win
Didn't trade away any of our best 15 players. Win.
Missed out on Jacksh and O'Rourke. Loss.
Couldn't generate further top ten picks. Loss.

Re: Saints- Pass or Fail for Trade Period?
Dirty big arse fail!
Bluff and bluster about pick 1.
Traded Stanley, after trading McEvoy. Yeah that will work out well...
Actually, maybe its actually a win!
At least we dont have multiple picks in the top ten to f*** up.
With the idiots running the assylum at Seaford with its past history of trading we probably would have ended up with a couple of Roden's and half a slab of Crownies.

Re: Saints- Pass or Fail for Trade Period?
Fail, probably but the Boyd/Griffen deal may have stuffed things up for us.
Holder of unacceptable views and other thought crimes.
Re: Saints- Pass or Fail for Trade Period?
Neither.
Stanley for pick 21 was a win, but I'm disappointed that we held pick 1. I did get excited about the rumoured Tomlinson deal, I thought he'd be a great fit.

Re: Saints- Pass or Fail for Trade Period?
Break even to Slight pass.
21 is overs for Stanley.
So on that alone we are marginally ahead.
Thats about all there is to evaluate. What we gave up for what return.

Pass - Hard to know what was actually offered as opposed to all our theories.
Hold No. 1 pick best junior player in the country as well as 21,22 and 41. Ability to add Petracca, and 2 of the likes of Goddard, smith, Duggan, Blakely, Garlett and Daniel seems pretty good.

Re: Saints- Pass or Fail for Trade Period?
Pelchan said all along that the aim was 3 picks inside the first round. Given compensation picks etc, having 1, 21 and 22 is pretty close to meeting that goal. You can't evaluate potential business deals purely from the results without knowing how the to and fro was handled - if the other mobs weren't being realistic with what they put on the table then we've probably done the right thing. We've certainly shown a willingness to be proactive and inventive in our trading of late (last year especially) so this suggests that either we rate Petracca incredibly highly (assuming that's who we call) or that no one would offer anything decent to pry it from us. Can't wait to see who we call out on the Gold Coast in a week or two...
The future's so bright I've got to wear shades...

Re: Saints- Pass or Fail for Trade Period?
I'm of a different view. Initially I was disappointed.
I'm extremely keen on Petracca despite the little footage I've seen of him. We need midfielders and plenty of them. I don't have an issue trading Stanley, an athlete more than a natural footballer. He could be a useful player for Geelong, pick 21 is about right. With us most likely only getting 40 or so inside 50s per game next season and the bulk going to Riewoldt I couldn't see Stanley having a massive impact.
We bring in Tim Membrey who from all accounts is more of a Gunston type forward. He reads ok on paper, we effectively get him for nothing.
So this year we will gain: Membrey, pick 21. We lose: Stanley and pick 60
We have 3 picks within 20 or so and that was a stated goal.
Next season we develop Hickey and Longer in the ruck, I see Holmes getting an opportunity at some stage and we have Pierce as the back up ruck.
I'm comfortable with what we have done

Re: Saints- Pass or Fail for Trade Period?
Fail sadly. really wanted those multiple first round picks as I truly believe it would have fast tracked our rebuild big time. Imagine having picks 4,6 & 7.
Have no issue in getting pick 21 for Stanley as I believe its overs for him.
Still love my Saints though always have, always will.

Re: Saints- Pass or Fail for Trade Period?
Hang on.....we got pick 21 for a player most people think won't make it, get membry for SFA in psd and still get the best avl player that suits our needs in late Nov come draft time
And that's a fail???
PMSL
Why, because we didn't dish off the top pick for two low picks, seeing as that's the most that got offered to us ( thru the grapevine).???
Yeah I can see that as a fail
Not

Re: Saints- Pass or Fail for Trade Period?
They set out to get 3 picks in top 22 or whatever so its spun as a win.
I don't feel as though we have won though.
We are getting the best U18 in the country, so I can't be shattered but I'm not doing cartwheels. I just hope they didn't get greedy and knock back something like 4, 6 & 7 for 1, 21 & 22. I have a top 17 or so, after that you hope for a few sliders but I am concerned that two players in the top 15 will drop to 21 & 22 for us.

Re: Saints- Pass or Fail for Trade Period?
Didn't panic and cough up pick one for less than we wanted. Gave the sales pitch and no-one wanted to pay the price. Adios Stanley. I think he'll do ok or maybe do well at Geelong, but tough calls have to be made. Needs a nasty streak...too nice.
Held our nerve. Pass.

Re: Saints- Pass or Fail for Trade Period?
Supporters got caught up in the moment. Fuelled by Footy Forums and other social media. We thought all our Christmases were coming at once.
But as many pointed out yesterday, GWS would've had to be stark raving mad to do any of the deals that were being floated.
At 2:00 today reality has returned.
In the end we have pick 1.
And I for one am looking forward to welcoming our next champion in about 6 weeks time

Re: Saints- Pass or Fail for Trade Period?
If Petracca is #1 and wins 2 Brownlows and kicks 300 goals over his career, is our trade period a win?
If we unearth the next Dunstan at 21 and Stanley gets delisted in 2 years, is it a win?
The point is that you can't judge whether our trade period is a pass or fail until you see what our recruiting is like. For instance, last year many on here wrote that we lost out big time in the McEvoy trade, but having seen Dunstan and Savage, all of a sudden we are the big winners....
The other point to remember is that GWS have to reduce the size of their list, and there is no way they can hold on to all the players drafted with #4, #6 and #7, in addition to the guys currently on their list. We are essentially allowing them to do the hard work for us over the next couple of years, find out who is any good, and then we can entice more GWS players to come to the Saints...
