Far better than watching out team cop floggings week after week and winning the spoon.
It brings hope and a bit of angst, but we support the club not individuals - that's Essendon's domain.

Re: I detest trade period
I was excited by the idea of getting 3 x 1st round draft picks for #1 but that doesn't look like it now. It sort of feels like the anticipation leading up to a birthday and then the present is a pair of thongs...

More like undies. I mean, you'll always need undies, but it's hard to get excited about.WinnersOnly wrote:I was excited by the idea of getting 3 x 1st round draft picks for #1 but that doesn't look like it now. Gehrig emerged from scans yesterday saying he was "as sweet as a bun"
Re: I detest trade period
Ditto. It's like Pelchen gets to treat the club as his own version of money ball and we have to year after year trade players out for random draft picks. Doesn't matter that we've put time into them and look forward to seeing them develop.saintbrat wrote:The worst time of my football year
Thought we might get through this trade period unscathed but no such luck.

Re: I detest trade period
The day we signed Hamill and Gehrig (plus Callaghan, Capuano and Lawrence) was one of the most exciting days in the history of the club.
A month before, we were the absolute laughing stock of the competition. Then we transformed overnight into a club that had clout. The signing of Blight followed. Granted, four of the six didn't have much impact in the long run, but the message of intent was clear.
We added Riewoldt and Koschitzke at the draft, and while 2001 as another shocker on-field, the statement of ambition had been lodged that day in October 2000.
Trade period has since delivered us with a lot of fine players, and a lot of hope that's come with it. Our drafting has been terrible in the past decade and we've had to rely on the trade table to stay competitive.

Clueless and mediocre petty tyrant.

yeah..and got rid of the twins who both went on to have outstanding careers as key backs...a commodity of which we have been sadly lacking ever since......
ps...i would have thought that it would be more accurate to say that the trade period has left many supporters deflated as it has more often than not stripped the club of it's star /better players...

Re: I detest trade period
It's probably going to get worse too. With free agency players can do what they want. It seems that contracts don't mean anything to players or clubs anymore.
David Schwarz was saying the other day that he turned down plenty of offers because the idea of being a one club player meant so much more to him. Burke, Harvey and Loewe would have done the same. Seems like an old fashioned idea now that one year players are asking to move.

Re: I detest trade period
Trade period is awesome.
A big meat market where anything goes.
I love it. 2 weeks is perfect. 1 week was too short and 3 weeks last year to long.
I'm glad we've done a trade, doubt we'll have any further luck or have anyone else we want to move on that yields a good pick

so let me get this straight you would have rather we kept Darryl Wakelin and not picked up Aaron Hamil ??stinger wrote:

also with Shane Wakelin he was the one who wanted out of the saints after only playing 4 games in 2000 ...

Ian Stewart traded out for Billy Barrot.saintbrat wrote:its been happening longer than that, morris, green, lockett,123Saints wrote:Ditto. Barrot flopped for us but Stewart won another Brownlow for Richmond.
I heard rumours about Stewart but nothing concrete and not raised at the royal commission.

I quite like this time of year, all the speculation, all the waiting to see what is true and what is Bulldust, the surprise re who got traded out, the reactions on here.

Glad it's over Tomorrow though, i'm looking forward to the draft, i'm going to a concert on Draft night so i'll have to recap when i get home...

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Most players like and surely most supporters like especially if you are a struggling club.

Sometimes the draft is a good mechanism to avoid further embarrassment.
Such as Mr Christensen and Mrs Lonergan.
