Just maybe our brains trust saw enough from Pierce by the end of the season to decide he would go past Stanley within the next one to two seasons, which makes Stanley dispensable, particularly if he has currency. Make no mistake, we need to get young talent into our list, and plenty of it. The only way to do that at an accelerated rate is to gain extra picks, and there are limited means to gain extra picks. One of the main ones is to trade existing players for picks and in that department we have very little currency that we can afford to part with, and I would guess that Stanley is unfortunately considered the currency we can most afford to lose, particularly if the brains trust thinks that Peirce can replace soon enough and the pick we get for Stanley can be tuned into a desperately needed midfielder or key backman....
I agree. Our trading strategy last year (and this year) is with an eye on four years down the track, not next season. At the moment we have four players on our list that can play ruck, plus the club still has high hopes for Holmes.
It might be viewed that one of them is surplus to requirements and if we get a good deal we'll take it.
While pick 21 might be an unknown to us, the club would know which one of four or five players would be available with that pick. Same as last year with picks 17 & 18. The recruiters would have had probably five or six player who they thought would be there. It's not entirely guesswork.

Can someone confirm that Hampson was a pick 28?

Wiki says 32 but Afl.com.au says 28

I suspect it was traded as 28 and knocked back a few places after Daisy/Buddy compensation.

Plugger are you honestly half a quid? He lives 30mins from Seaford cos thats where is current workplace is. Not the other way around. Its not permanent and he will now MOVE to be closer to his new work.
It just proves the point. Seaford is in Melb and players still have a 30-60 min commute. Clearly players like all workers would prefer a 15 min commute. If they could live anywhere between Brighton and Port Melbourne and only have a 15min max commute to JO theyd be stoked.

If you think otherwise then u arent their 'mate' - you are a 'fan' because they are telling you porkies.

I agree with this and have been posting as such for months ( one thread I created - I think was called 'ruck farm') - my point of difference is and has been that I think Longer is the guy on the list who has value - (young - rucked all year was an early pick) who I think is surplus - ie has value + is surplus = tradeable - I think Stanley has more upside and I would like to keep him

Just announced (12.18) on SEN - Rhys and 60 to Geelong for Pick 21.

I just hope that our Recruiters know what they are doing. There is not much that I can see in this for us - hopefully, the Recruiters have someone good in mind!

Rightly or wrongly - Pelchen must have looked ahead and decided Rhys wasnt going to deliver enough for us in the future.

I doubt he would have considered how much we invested in Rhys in the past - that is now a sunk cost.

AMEN BROTHER. Never a truer 3 words spoken.
CRITICAL WE NAIL 21! (and/or 22). We can afford no recruitment mistakes from here.

Our future all sits on Elshaugh and his team now.

Yep.

Stanley was pick # 47 so it is a good win.

I think that's a win for us. Stanley has shown bits and pieces but it's good to see Pelchen trying to build a culture where not good enough is pegged as not good enough and shown the door.

Maybe we'll even make a play for Boyd after next year.

Snippet of inside info is telling me that Richo was on board with this trade as well - it's as much of a footy judgement as a list management one...

Also keep in mind that we are getting Membrey for nothing in the PSD, and we rate him as a top 30 pick.

Why is it critical that we nail pick 21 and not the other picks.

Probability is that we will nail only 2/3 picks.

A assume the recruiters make the best decsion with the information they have at the time. Sometines luck can play a big part as well.

Not happy with this -- if a Mcdonalds store has a KPI of selling 1000 Big Macs a day for the year and they drop the price to 10c a burger they might make the KPI but they still have a loss..... I don't think Pelchen should be setting goals such as 3 picks below 22 if he then goes and achieves that by making deals which are a loss.
