They drafted a whole bunch of talent over 5+ seasons due to pretty crappy performances consistently....
But, those crappy performances didn't result in them getting a whole lot of picks < 5. Quick bit of research on the guts of their side shows this;

Boak - Pick 5 in '06
Gray - 55 in '06
Westoff - 71 in '06
Lobbe - 16 in '07
Hartlett - 4 in '08
Trengove - 22 in '08
Broadbent - 38 in '08
Pittard - 16 in '09
O'Shea - 52 in '10
Wingard - 6 in '11
Wines - 7 in '12

Schulz, Monfries, Ebert, Polec, White from other clubs (don't know what they gave up). Traded for Hombsch to get him home from GWS.

Cornes, Carlile been there since Adam.

Hardly a truckload of high picks. Must be summin else at play....

Maybe they know what they're doing to a) get 'em there and b) get 'em to play?
One thing Port didn't do was trade out Westoff & Lobbe because they hadn't reached their peak by 24.

I'd prefer we kept Stanley as he is definitely a player who would young enough in 4 years time.

I've not seen it, in fact at times last year I thought he shouldn't get another game for the remainder of the season due to his lack of interest in providing a contest. He is a "nice" footballer with advanced athletic ability and some good foot skills. Pick 21 which gives us an opportunity to get a player with the kind of grunt to win us a GF, i'd take at this stage.

Of course when he comes out at Geelong next season after having a preseason on Balmey's angry pills and plays like Don Scott I'll apologise to all
Are you suggesting he does not play desperately enough to win a Norm Smith medal ?

Stanley may get you into a final, he will lose you a grand final.

Maybe they'll bundle 21 and 22 for a top 10?

Don't do it Saints.
Forget about all this leftist "needs help developing confidence".
We only need players who play so desperate that you think their life is on the line.
Because that is how the opposition plays in the grand final

Picks in the 20s may help you in a grand final but they won't win it for you.

As it stands Geelong best draft pick is 14.
It would require a third club to be involved in the deal to get a top 10.

TOT , Con

Easy to pick figures on " clever" drafting and pick numbers. One thing to take into consideration is that it's a lot easier to hide players away from Victoria than it is in it.
I can promise you for example that Chris Grant went to the Bulldogs in the old days after pick 70 (73?) . Doug Hawkins actually worked for my organization at the time ( I was his actual supervisor but we became very, very good friends).
From the best of my memory ( and without googling it) Grant came from Dayslford?
Grant was the most outstanding young player from that district for years. He was withdrawn from playing the local league about round seven and given a cast iron ( and dollar) guarantee that he would be drafted by the Dogs.

History will say he was a fantastic late draft pick
Fact is , he was probably the best junior in the whole state of Victoria

Now I could be naive , but let me suggest for just a moment that away from prying eyes that interestate clubs seem to find a Gem here and there away from prying eyes.
These days, with more and more talent scouts , it's a he'll of a lot harder to hide players , but I bet it still happens.

As a matter of fact one one my old team mates was paid by Carlscum (in the old paper bag days), Not to sign with any other club ( back in those days VFL clubs). Actually got paid more than he was getting playing for the what we called the VFA in those days. He had degenerative knees , never Played in the big league , but was a champion full forward in the then VFA.

Jaxons, do you think the Dogs will trade Griffen to GWS considering GWS are refusing to trade Boyd? Obviously this effects our ability to trade pick 1 for multiple picks with the Giants.

Disappointing.

Will be a very good ruck / forward at Geelong for many years to come. He could even become their #1 ruckman.

We shall regret this one.

Geelong are clever.

We are too desperate to get that third pick inside 22.

Stanley's trade value is closer to a pick in the 30's I would've thought. Pick 21 for Stanley you take it & run.

I'd prefer we kept Stanley as he is definitely a player who would young enough in 4 years time.

Complete apple and oranges here...
- Westoff is a pure forward who kicked 34 goals in his first season as a 19 year old = proven when played
- Lobbe a pure highly rated ruckmen (pick 16) who never got his opportunity until the last 2 seasons where he is now club's no. 1 ruckman.. = proven when played

To me Stanley is an athelete playing football.... not a natural forward or ruck man.. who's had his opportunities after 5 seasons... just my opinion though

The only way I like this trade is if we get 4, 6 or 7 and possibly 19 depending on wether the bulldogs trade Griffen.

Otherwise .... No sir, I don't like it. Can only hope Geelong bail at the last minute.

I wonder what the hold up was? Perhaps he is considering the offers, perhaps we are waiting on Freo or perhaps Rhys just doesnt want to be traded?

Cant get 19 as it will be part of the trade to Carlton for Jaksch.

Possible to get 4,6,and or 7.

We will get Petracca if we dont.

Good luck Rhys, a tough decision, but we are spooners and we need to move forward.

Prefer not to trade but #21 is overs for Rhys.

Hope he goes well at the Cats. No ill will towards Rhys. Dont want him to fail, but I hope our choices mirror last years pick of Billings Dunstan and Acres.

That was a big win for us.

Gees if he does and the deal does fall thru it would be a big wake up for him and might be just the trigger to get him performing!
