SEEING EARLY CAREY

Post: # 1509610Post Megamaguire »

Con I remember seeing Carey over the fence @ Moorabbin - could have been 1992, anyway as a a young player he really looked like a serious force charging around the field and keeping in front of his persuers.
He looked very involved and comfortable out there. And the 46 goals well there you are.
Rhys has never struck me as being adequetly switched on enough for the responsibility that goes with being a big guy. Hey he could simply be a late developer and might be only now ready yo exert his utmost on the field of play. He still could become a very good player, 'Could' being the operative word. With my original impression of Carey (around 1992) i was convinced that he would be a seriously good player.

Geewrong could have better success with their famous system than us but i'm now interested in who we might get with that Pick # 21??.
If he stays or goes i could go either way.

Getting pick 21 could possibly give us leverage for another trade in which we could upgrade our picks. I wouldn't like to see Stanley go for just pick 21, though. The only rationale I can see is that it would open up our position to close off other deals that work to our advantage. Could end up being another Matthew Lappin scenario, otherwise.

I'd be dangling his name in front of Adelaide. He's from Adelaide, and no doubt he'd like to return there. Pick 10 would be a win.

Fkn...

This could be an "I told you so thread".

If the price is right... Pick 14 would make it feel better.

Stanley could still develop. And we have several years invested already.

Brad Ottens was a previous pick 2 and had shown a very high level of ability, just needed to get out of the Tigers who couldnt develop him enough.

We have developed a speculative pick into a first rounder in return, and he has arguably reached his ceiling.

Comparing Stanley to Ottens is like comparing Fiora to Fyfe.
Rubbish statement!

Wait till Rhys finishes his career completely, and THEN make the call!

Don't like the trade to Geelong. Pick 21 isn't enough.
Stanley has just arrived IMO and with NRoo nearing the end of his career and big fwds who can take a grab few and far between think this is a bad idea.
Pick 14 would be closer to his value and I'd be a lot happier with that but even then would have some misgivings about trading him. He will be a good player.

Having two successive picks is always a good thing to have, though.

21 and 22 should give us something, at least. The pick 22 allows us to choose the player we want without another club jumping in ahead of us. Hopefully it'll be someone like Lewis Taylor, who got selected at 28 last year

Does that mean Richmond gave up on Taylor for Hampson - or was Hampson the year before?

Huge screw up if true.

My bad. Hampson was actually pick 32!

Carlton used that to get Everitt + Cameron Giles.

So probably Nil -All

how has Stanley finally arrived ?? he looked good in patches in 3 games last year other than that it was same old same old from him ... he may improve signifigantly with better delivery but the fact is he isnt going to get that from us for a fair while yet .. as for sending him to freo over geelong basically whoever offers more and where Rhys wants to go is all that matters

I was really impressed with Rhys' kicking at goal this season. Regularly went back and slotted shots from 50-55m, seemed like his confidence was really building. Another pre-season or two and some decent supply and you could imagine him easily going to next level. With that in mind #21 is a bit of a gamble for mine.

Having said that we don't know what other deals are in the pipeline, it's different looking at a lone trade in isolation compared to seeing it as part of a combination of moves etc

Honestly how good do people think Stanley will become?

Forget the ultra top liners, so as good as Jack Riewoldt/ Taylor Walker??.. No hope.
Josh Kennedy (WCE)? Kurt Tippet? Also no hope, so let's go a tier lower.

Will he be as good as Chris Dawes? I think Dawes has him covered, although it's a toss up.

I'd just like some feedback as to a comparison as to how good he'll become, after 5 full seasons in the system?

Brad Ottens was used before.. As I mentioned, former number 2 draft pick and real natural footballer, is a terrible comparison. Ottens is 4 times the player.

Trade looks pretty even on paper, short term they win , long term could easily be us. However there is no insurance policy for dud picks, could effectively be giving him away for a guy who can't cope in afl. So I would have to lean towards a sweetener in the deal like a player or better pick.

See I think Stanley is about the equivalent sort of footballer to Hampson. They've done about the same in their careers and I don't think Rhys will ever make it to 100 games.

So I reckon this is a good trade, and allows us to fill more of a need than Stanley meets.

Put it another way: Rhys Stanley won't be the difference between us winning or losing a flag in 2018/2019.

Who looked more likely at the same age, Stanley or Jay Schultz?

I think that's the danger. I'd be iffy, but hopeful about pick 21. If we snagged another Luke Dunstan (leadership/ability wise, not necessarily the same type of player) , and Membrey translates his reserve form to the firsts.... Along with Petracca, ignoring pick 22, we'd have capitalised on last years draft in a big way.
