Re: St Kilda Players Contracts 2015 and beyond
Jack Steven!
If we are looking at using the PSD in 2015 (say on the likes of a Cameron), then Jack must not be allowed to come out of contract!
His contract must be extended now..., or he is put up for trade this draft/trading period!
We must not risk losing a gun like Jack for nothing!!! (That would only appease one fellow Saintsationalist. )
On the other hand, if we are planning on staying out of the 2015 PSD, then no need to extend Jack's contract. Should we lose him to the Dark Side (aka, any club that isn't our's ), then given our predicted lowly finish/high first draft pick, should Jack leave us, we'd (hopefully) be in line for a compensatory pick behind said our first pick.
Personally, I want Jack, not the extra top 10 (maybe top 5) draft pick. But, IMHO what happens re Jack's contract extension (or lack thereof) is going to be very telling re our plans for the 2015 drafts and trading period.

I want him to stay but I could understand both Jack and the club waiting until half way through next year to see if he plays like last season or this season. If he plays like last season there are 2 options, one we re sign him for a few years thus ensuring he finishes his career with us or two we let him go via FA for big money and a long contract and due to a likely last finish get compensation of pick two which is probably better value than his true worth. If he struggles like this season then there is probably only one option and that's to keep him because via FA it wont be worth losing. Still rather keep him but if we really have a bad year as I expect it may quicken up the rebuild by losing him.

Mav Weller has no contract at all? Something strange.
Is he to be left on the rookie list?

We must not risk losing a gun like Jack for nothing!!! (That would only appease one fellow Saintsationalist. )
On the other hand, if we are planning on staying out of the 2015 PSD, then no need to extend Jack's contract. Should we lose him to the Dark Side (aka, any club that isn't our's ), then given our predicted lowly finish/high first draft pick, should Jack leave us, we'd (hopefully) be in line for a compensatory pick behind said our first pick.
Personally, I want Jack, not the extra top 10 (maybe top 5) draft pick. But, IMHO what happens re Jack's contract extension (or lack thereof) is going to be very telling re our plans for the 2015 drafts and trading period.

then losing Steven to FA, but gaining a Cameron in the PSD...
wouldn't that downgrade the compensation pick we'd receive for Steven?
Or would that only be the case if we took an elite player via FA, ie; PSD uncontracted players picked-up don't affect a club's FA compensation pick's value...?

No they wouldn't because unless they are mind readers the PSD is after trading. No elite players get taken in the PSD anyway. It said in the paper the other day that the AFL basically tell you the pick you will get if you lose a player. If we got an elite player through FA and lost an elite player we would get nothing. Still to early for FA next year anyway IMO. We will finish last so we have no appeal. Must be on the rise to get players interested in coming to your club so hopefully by the end of 2016 we have maybe won 4-6 games and rising.

Re: St Kilda Players Contracts 2015 and beyond
If you lose a top player to free agency and big bucks when holding the wooden spoon you effectively get given pick No2 immediately after your pick first round pick No1.
If you lose the same player while on top of the ladder you only get pick No 19.
That is why there is alarm that James Frawley may be deemed a mid first round compensation delivering Melbourne pick No 3.
Thus providing excess compensation.
The one thing you don't want to do is bring in a free agent who could nullify that compensation pick.
Free agency needs to be in one direction each year.

Re: St Kilda Players Contracts 2015 and beyond
Thanks for clearing that up for me Pluggs and Ace.ace wrote:If you lose a top player to free agency and big bucks when holding the wooden spoon you effectively get given pick No2 immediately after your pick first round pick No1.
Ok, no need to lock Jack. (Sigh of relief.) If we are to loose the likes of him through FA, then compensation-wise, bottom of the ladder finishes are the time to do so.
Of course, once compensation (or 'decent' compensation) for lost FA players is (inevitably?) removed...
then IMHO my original proposition will become the norm...
as per what happens in comps' like the EPL, I can't see any club then allowing a required top-line player to ever come out of contract.
Taking Jack as an example, with only one year of contract left (2015), it'll be extend now, or you're on the table in this year's trading period (2014).

There's a discussion awaiting on the other thread re how we can (or can't) get those extra four or five top line midfielders by 2018. (Not here, but over in that thread, could you start with why you think Dunstan may or may not make it into that category? )

Thanks Hawkes. Way too kind.
And yes, I'd happily take the shot... providing I could have access to that SS 'Preview' button that I often make much use of before actually posting.

Contracts don't mean anything anymore.
In Springfield, they're eating the dogs. The people that came in, they're eating the cats. They’re eating – they are eating the pets of the people that live there.

Richardson said the re-signing of skipper Riewoldt until the end of 2016 was a win for the club’s medical team.
“We’ve been able to have people around him medically who have a real understanding of his body. Obviously his performances suggest they’ve got it right, he’s got it right and we’re really confident that he’s going to see out the term, absolutely,” he said.
