I reckon if you drill down into the numbers other clubs would have quite high numbers of players who played in other team's premierships. Doubt we are leaders in this stat.
what ..only 20 players from the club to have played in a premiership side with the club...and an equal number who won flags with other clubs.......????i very much doubt it....
It would be interesting to know exactly. It is disgrace of course that only 20 players have been in a Premiership for the Saints, but who do you blame for the other? Who mucked it up?
We left the Junction to get away from the cricket club, and to have financial independence. Most of those players have played in other team's Premierships since. What went wrong, and who us to blame?
i think it really sad when i look at the numbers of saints champions who have left the club for one reason or another to play with other clubs..
there were plenty before my time...roy cazaly for example..he left because of club infighting....
but i hated seeing ian stewart, carl ditterich..twice...stuart trott, russell greene, val perovic, rod owen russell jeffrey, glen elliott, david grant, gilbert mcadam, tony lockett, nicky winmar, barry hall, luke ball, brendon goodard, nick dal santo and big boy mcevoy(not so much)...play in the colours of teams i despised.....most of them , we could have kept and i believe our history would not be so dessolute if we had........

I agree with all of that. Ian Stewart was let go by Jeans who couldn't abide his off-field stuff. You probably know that story better than me. Suppose Carl did it for the money. But when we were broke and just let them go...Greene, Perovic, Elliott...well that was shocking. That period of course nearly sent us into never never land. Would love to really know what happened through those years. The big teams just bought players, and Hawthorn got the zoning deal that set them on their path. We languished for years.

That's an interesting point.
I'm not sure we had anyone?
Can anyone confirm if any of the 66 boys came to us from other VFL clubs?
The rest of Australia can wander mask-free, socialise, eat out, no curfews, no zoning, no police rings of steel, no illogical inconsistent rules.
They can even WATCH LIVE FOOTY!

None came from other VFL clubs. Stewart and Davis left later for other clubs, as did Big Carl who was suspended. Players did move much in those days. Clubs just wouldn't clear them. Was quite rare. Not like now!

Reckon that is a real myth. Plenty left their club if they got paid enough but bugger all got paid any money. Percentage wise a lot more left who got above the minimum wages.

What was a myth? Players swapping clubs in the 60's? Hardly ever happened. Barassi left Melb to be Capt/Coach of Carlton, can't think of any other big ones. That's why the 10 year rule came in which helped North to their 1st flag. That was '73 I think.

I agree a lot didn't leave because most where on the same wage so what was the point? However the percentage of players leaving who did earn more than the rest was pretty high.

Just for the exercise, name a few. In the 60's I can only remember the Saints getting Bruce McMaster Smith from Carlton, and the Pascoes from North. There might be others, but I can't think of any. The 70's were different. The 10 year rule moved a few around, and we started to lose a few as we've previously mentioned because we had no money.

max pitt came to us after playing for the filth in their losing grandfinal side.....if my memory is correct....
we lost carl the first time under the ten year rule....that rule didn't help us but got the roos their first premiership cup...
alan davis became a bit of a wanderer.....played for the dees, the cheatersand the filth after leaving us....
kicked over 300 goals for us in about 170 games.....he was only 17 when he played in the 66 grand final side.......later coached the side when the doc had a stroke.....

So maybe there is more than 20 or one of the others didn't play in the GF.
Unbelievable effort there John. I wonder what the figures are for other clubs? Some were suggesting our figure was high, but I find it hard to believe that the same didn't occur for players leaving other clubs.

There may be others but they would have played less than 10 games for the Saints, and I may have missed someone.
That is more than 20 - so obviously some of them didn't play.
I think it was couched as St Kilda players who swapped clubs to play in a premiership, rather that StKilda players who at some time won a premiership????? so not sure if Harding counts or not.
Galt was not in 79 Premiership Team...though Jezza, Sheldon and McConville all were, and who later played at the Saints.
