Saints who have left to win flags
Benny McEvoy has become the 20th saint to leave the club and play in a premiership elsewhere. So now there are 20 St.Kilda premiership players and an equal number who have left and tasted the ultimate success. Sickening, really.
I started with nothing and I've got most of it left!

Wakelin, Hall, Ball, Guerra, Stewart... That's all I can think of at the moment.

I don't think Kevin Billings took the field, so there are only 19 Saints premiership players.White Winmar wrote:Benny McEvoy has become the 20th saint to leave the club and play in a premiership elsewhere. Don't forget Ian Stewart is in both groups!

Re: Saints who have left to win flags
When u have won only one flag in 120 years and over a thousand people have played for the saints its probably a fairly bog standard statisti if you drill down into it.

Me too, it turned me to wip the cork out of the bottle when Bruce McAverny came up with that stat on the telecast today. And remember we are 2 hours behind in WA.

Re: Saints who have left to win flags
As I posted in another thread, good onya Ben, and best of luck.
But he only just scraped into a side with no ruckmen of any note. The result would have been the same today if Ceglar had rucked instead. Beyond doing his job by not being dominated by the Swine's ruckman, Ben had zero influence on today's Dawk's win.
Or put another way... no way Ben would be commanding a draft pick anywhere near number 19 this year.

I thought him too. Then looked it up. He only played in the 75 GF loss for Haw, so no.winmaaah wrote:Stuart Trott
I reckon if you drill down into the numbers other clubs would have quite high numbers of players who played in other team's premierships. Doubt we are leaders in this stat.

Re: Saints who have left to win flags
I'm sure Bruce Macaveny has that stat in his notebook....... as he was the one that trotted the figures out about the Saints in his commentary on Saturday when Ben got a touch of the forty.matrix wrote:actually that would be an interesting stat to know
i wonder if anyone's has figured out the number for each side?
I can remember Sprigg (can't recall his first name) an ABC radio sports journo in Perth told me that Bruce had all these handwritten notebooks, full of sports statistics. Footy, athletics, horse racing etc etc. Sprigg said Bruce carts them with him everywhere and in a flash can pick out a statistic from one of his many school exercise books. He said they were all colour coded, cross referenced and spot on!!
I don't know if Brucey Boy has transferred to computers as yet.
Sprigg (who is now deceased) told me this about 5 or 6 years ago, I was sitting next to him at a cricket function, with Glen Mitchell (ex-ABC sports commentator). I was congratulating Glenn on his statistical knowledge of sport, Sprigg then mentioned Bruce's books and Mitchell agreed that Bruce Macaveny was amazing, as he not only indelible memory as far as stats went, but he kept is stats in the old fashion method......pen into an exercise book.
Mitchell said of Macaveny, if he had been an accountant, he would have used an abacus and would have arrived at the correct answers before those using a calculator!!!

Re: Saints who have left to win flags
It would be interesting to know exactly. It is disgrace of course that only 20 players have been in a Premiership for the Saints, but who do you blame for the other? Who mucked it up?stinger wrote:what ..only 20 players from the club to have played in a premiership side with the club...and an equal number who won flags with other clubs.......????i very much doubt it....Verdun66 wrote:

We left the Junction to get away from the cricket club, and to have financial independence. Most of those players have played in other team's Premierships since. What went wrong, and who us to blame?

Well if we'd won more premierships we'd have more players from other clubs as well.
