As good as Dal is ...
In our struggling team Dal gets tagged and is ineffective except for picking up cheap possessions in defence
At North he is one of many mids - totally different scenario

Give it up mate

Different teams, different lists and different requirements.

I did notice that pre-game Andrew Swallow addressed the team...

Once in battle...it was Dal

Surprise surprise

Dal is 31. Longer is 21. we didn't bother recruiting properly for five years under Lyon Nd the young players we did have weren't developed, just culled from the list.
We then recruited three pathetic forwards from Perth under Watters. It's a long way back. 7 years without talent/ new blood. Gotta speed up the process somehow. Reckon Joey might go too for a pick under 21.

Yeah, I hear what you're saying - it definitely hurts to see one of our own playing for someone else, particularly when he didn't want to go.

But the way to look at it given where we're at as a team is:

- Dal would have made no difference to our win/loss this year
- Longer made no difference to our win/loss this year
- Dal would have made no difference to our win/loss in 5 years
- Longer might make a huge difference to our win/loss in 5 years

Rebuilding requires massive patience and taking a few risks.

If we only received pick 25 for Dal how on earth is Frawley worth pick 3 as compensation.
Even considering that dal was older he still is a better player than Frawley who in my opinion is a fairly ordinary player.

Its a formula that is based on age, length of contract and the amount paid. If Frawley was to get 5 years on 700K then it will be pick 3. If he got 3 years and 500K it would be band 2 which is the same as Dals I think. Others on here would have a better idea.

Why are we whinging about what we got for Dal Santo?

Exactly.

As I wrote in another thread. The Pelchen Strategy to rebuild the playing list has as one of its tactics letting go good players (or in Ben's case perceived good players!!!) in order to gain more young players who can be part of hopefully our next "good" team.

Now whether he is ultimately successful or not will be revealed in the fullness of time. But that is the clear tactic. The tactic too may be a sound one, but could be undone if the young players we choose are the wrong ones. ie Jury is out on Hickey. Lee, whire, Wright etc.... But then again we have been in a death-spiral for a while as we were choosing the wrong picks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dal and BJ may have helped us win a few more games, but that would have been it. We may have finished 15th rather than 18th!!! Our prognosis for the next several years would have been worse.

OK so if we kept Dal, and even throw in BJ....we finish what 13th?
Get worse draft picks
Cost development of two kids,
cost about ! million a season
Even further away from the rebuild we need to be competitive

Good luck to Dal...was a great player for the Saints and will always be rememberted as a Saints player....right move to trade him for all concerned

Gee whizz - are we still going over this?

Obviously Dal and BJ were huge losses and wed be better with them in the short term. Wed probably get up to 15th or 14th so with them in our side.

But the reality is our list was left in such a horrendous state after the Lyon years we simply had no choice but to take drastic measures or face a certain decade anchored to the bottom.

As it is we might have to spend 5 years at the bottom - and two have already gone - so only 3 to go.

Better than having 7 to go - because the hole left if we kept BJ and Dal would be even harder to fill when they finally left and we may never have recovered. Losing them was harsh but necessary medicine.

NDS is one of a bunch of players who couldn't get us over the line in three GF attempts, and really if we think it's best to move a couple of them on, so be it.. as we need inside ball getters not icing on the cake players.

Great user of the football, awful at defending. Don't see it as being a huge loss. Either way we were going to have some tough years ahead.

FFS Longer is a 21 year old ruckman and former first round draft pick.

Give him some time!

Dal and Goddard were great but there is no point in having them when we are in full rebuild. Our list construction is starting to take some real shape finally. Watters bipolar direction probably meant we went after partially ready made players that didn't impact as much as we would have liked but the gloves are off now and we are in a full ground up remodel.

Goddard especially lifts for big games but looked disinterested in his last year with us. Dal looked tired from the tags he got. We might already have his equal at the club already in one of Billings, Acres or Dunstan. Wright, Saunders, Lee, White etc might be the next gun. You need to let go of what was and look forward. I'm enjoying watching finals again with out angst or regret.

We also got the number 1 draft pick this year too.

Explicit drafting of longer and Delaney...

Implicit of low draft picks this year and prob next.

It was the right move in terms of the future but it will be extremely hard to watch when he plays his 300th game with North. I miss him :(

I have almost as much affection toward Dal now as I did when he played for us. He reluctantly went to North because he knew it was in St Kilda's best interests (and it was!). He isn't on a huge contract there, he didn't shop himself around to jump onto an easy flag favourite. And most importantly, from all the years of watching him play, he seems like a truly great guy — no arrogance, no hangups, just quality.

christ not this again
if north hadnt played in a final last night we wouldnt be talking about him

its not like he dragged them over the line and stood up in the clinch last few mins with silky smooth skills and cut the bombers apart thru the middle hitting petrie lace out in front

good lordy

Because dal was ripping up the league last year earning his total of 1 brownlow vote. A move was made while he still had currency because another season like that and we would get nothing and ultimately we are in the same place regardless. Except now we have future prospects.
