No More Tears and Wooden Spoons!
It was good that we were able to avoid getting a wooden spoon for fourteen years. A much higher standard at the club was established and was reasonably sustained. What is the longest period in the club's history to not finish dead last, anyway?
In saying this, I'd like the club to do its utmost to see that this doesn't happen for a long, long time. A lot of people seem to think it'll be back-to-back, but it'd be pleasing if we could at least exceed people's expectations next year and improve.
Before the next spoon, there'd better be a flag.

Re: No More Tears and Wooden Spoons!
whilst we may improve in 2015 (and we should) i can't see any team in the league that will be worse than us..? perhaps only melbourne if the wheels well and truly fall off but that is clutching at straws.
i think it is another spoon at the minimun.

Im not sure we should. We have lost our second best player and 2 guys that played most games in CJ and Jimmy. Rooy is older again and Joey is past his best. We may or may not have less injuries so I never take that into account. Yep the younger guys will be a year older but im unsure any of them will get close to replacing Lenny even as a group and as you pointed out if others improve who do we actually beat?

Re: No More Tears and Wooden Spoons!
What's this issue people have with receiving wooden spoons? They don't mean anything in modern footy.
Would you prefer to give up the 2000 wooden spoon and be without Nick Riewoldt for the last 14 seasons?
Wooden spoons mean nothing. Yes we finished last, yes we are the worst performed side for the season, but so what. Upside of a last place finish massively outweighs the disappointment of finishing last.
Do you think Gold Coast and GWS care that they began with wooden spoons? Did Brisbane care when they won it 1998? Did Collingwood care in 1999? No, they played each other in two Grand Finals less than 5 years later.
If you don't like finishing last, get over it, it's part of the modern footy rebuild, and our club is bloody good at a rebuild. (See '88 to '91, '94 to '97, '00 to '04)

Not sure you have to finish last to rebuild. Yep we got Rooy for finishing last but Melbourne got Jack Watts. I would take 17th over 18th every year.

Some may prefer 17th over 18th, but I know what Alan Richardson and Chris Pelchen would prefer.

Thats fine. They can prefer it, I dont. You and many others do as many others dont want to finish last.

Re: No More Tears and Wooden Spoons!
But so many clubs avoided finishing last and still rebuilt e.g. Geelong prior to 2007. North Melbourne never finish last and it means a HELL OF A LOT. If a club like North finishes last it could be a nail in their coffin in this 21st century corporate-cutthroat era of the game.Beno88 wrote:If you don't like finishing last, get over it, it's part of the modern footy rebuild, and our club is bloody good at a rebuild. You never see the Bummers finish last.
Our club has been trying to shed the "losing culture" image since 2000. More wooden spoons aren't going to help that cause.
It's a shame fans think it's a foregone conclusion that we'll collect another for our (already full) kitchen drawers in 2015.

Unfortunately we follow a club who have accepted mediocrity for much of its history, and look for every excuse to justify failure. I just hope the current president and board set the bar high and demand the best from everyone and then hopefully we climb back up the ladder, as basically this season was unacceptable rubbish.

Re: No More Tears and Wooden Spoons!
If you have a quick squiz at the lists, we clearly have the worst... & when the worst list is smashed with injuries, they become uncompetitive. It's got nothing to do with accepting mediocrity, it's accepting reality... Embrace it spert, you will have a lot less angst.spert wrote:Unfortunately we follow a club who have accepted mediocrity for much of its history, and look for every excuse to justify failure. The team has been trying, they are not as good as the other teams.
Hawthorn & collingwood have had recent success off the back of bottom 3 finishes... Geelong & Sydney have had success under some very favourable rules.
We butchered multiple drafts & will now pay the price, stamping your foot & whining isn't going to change it.
I certainly don't want to follow a North Melbourne path... They define mediocre, how many years have they been hovering around the middle now?

Re: No More Tears and Wooden Spoons!
And don't get me started on f****** Essendon... Irrelevant for nearly 15 years with a drug cheating program the most interesting thing to happen to them in that period.
I couldn't give a s*** what anyone thinks or says about us getting another spoon, we'll be back up the top before those other mediocre sides that some on here seem to pine for.

Agree with everything you say. Poor clubs like ours are locked into the socialistic cycle the AFL has created and we are the only poor club that has not only benefited from it but we proved that it almost works.Beno88 wrote:What's this issue people have with receiving wooden spoons? People forget that if we had of won a flag then we would have been the first of the poor clubs to do so from the draft system since it was introduced. We have experience and expertise with building a flag from low draft picks and have established a reputation and culture capable of doing it in the past and so can't see why we won't do again in this next cycle. We aren't a rich club that can develop players like the Cats and Hawks so we have to go to the bottom of the well. It wouldn't bother me if we won the next two wooden spoons. It would mean we would become a top four side much quicker than any other way.

Well if the poor clubs are North, WB, Melb and Us then you statement is wrong because North won after the draft and the other 3 havent won for nearlt 50 years anyway so that statement is wrong. I would suggest poor clubs as you call them have done much better under the draft than before the draft. Not sure you have to be on the bottom for 3 years to do well. matter of fact i doubt any side has done that under the current system.

We have done much better since the introduction of the draft. We are more likely to have a better future for short term pain now. 5 years of finishing 7 to 15 won't make us happy for long. Rebuild hard come back strong.plugger66 wrote:Cairnsman wrote:Agree with everything you say. Re: No More Tears and Wooden Spoons!
Just a few serious questions:
Do we actually "win" a wooden spoon?
If so, do we have them on display with year won, etc?
Is there some sort of presentation on grand final day?

Re: No More Tears and Wooden Spoons!
One of our clubs strongest periods started off with a few bottom 4s and a wooden spoon, would not have happened otherwise. We recruited very well, I say we are very good at rebuilding a list using the draft system, our recent history proves that. We need more wooden spoons or bottom 4 finishes. We are a snowflakes chance in hell of becoming a top 3 side again without a few more bottom 4 finishes and another wooden spoon or two won't hurt for good measure.plugger66 wrote:Cairnsman wrote:Agree with everything you say. I'd much rather be the wooden spooner than 9th. The rewards is significantly better in the modern game.
