Longer has a long way to go.
His tap work is average but his around the ground work is non existent. I'm not sure what the recruiters saw in him other than the fact he is young and we needed another ruckman after McEvoy was traded.

Re: Longer has a long way to go.
Smashed in the first quarter, but came back well in the second half. I wonder how many times Lenny has been ruckman at the centre bounce.
Re: Longer has a long way to go.
Is a mile away. Just does not know how to get the footy.
Sure, occasionally taps it ok, but that is nigh in irrelevant. Has plenty of time to improve, but he'd want to show some ability to win possession.

Re: Longer has a long way to go.
developing ruck... what did we expect? We've had the same conversation about McEvoy, Stanley, and Hickey too
Re: Longer has a long way to go.
He was going up against probably the best Ruckman in the comp, next to sandilands...
He is very young, and is our second choice at the moment for Ruck... so no real concerns from todays game...

I think it's the negative threads like this that make me think that when we become a force again do I want to share it with certain elements of my own supporter base.

Re: Longer has a long way to go.i
I thought in the main he competed well in the ruck he just needs to start clunking some marks. He seems to get his hand to a lot but cant grab them....?
SAINTS another day older another day closer to the Holy Grail!
Re: Longer has a long way to go.
With his body frame I thought he would be good at Marking, but he is far from it. He competes well, but if he can't learn to clunk marks he will never be a good afl footballer.

Just wondering have you ever posted anything on this forum remotely positive about anything ?citywest wrote:His tap work is average but his around the ground work is non existent. All for having an opinion but you really come across as either a non St Kilda supporter or quite possibly the most negative person of all time on this forum.

Re: Longer has a long way to go.
Thought he battled manfully all day long against a very strong big unit in Minson...he got to plenty of marking contests and brought the ball to ground on occasions, think he'll come good with his marking, it a strength, confidence and experience combo IMO and can't wait to see the big fella do well for us, this year has been great for his development!
Re: Longer has a long way to go.
Unless Longer can learn to mark and get the ball around the ground its a waste just hitting the ball in the ruck as proven by not one centre clearance in the first quarter. Will never play forward based on today. marks as well as Paul Callery.

Visit the Longer/Hickey/any other ruckman in the league debate when they hit 27. 98% of them are dinosaurs until they hit that age. Why we and other clubs waste high picks on them when they are kids baffles me

can anyone remember how big boy was going in his first year? I know he ended up taking top clucks but in his first few seasons how long did it take him to get going?

Probably terribly but by his third year he was playing in a GF.

Re: Longer has a long way to go.
In McEvoy's first few seasons he was a second string ruckman playing 60-70% game time and averaging 3-4 marks.plugger66 wrote:ShanghaiSaint wrote:can anyone remember how big boy was going in his first year? Longer in his third year is playing about 80% game time and averaging 1 mark.

Re: Longer has a long way to go.
Hickey jumps high but seems to have no plan as to where he wants to palm it.
Doesn't get much of it round the ground and seems to panic on the rare occasion he does get it.
Plenty of work required during off season, but young and mobile so there is hope!

Re: Longer has a long way to go.
Not his best game today, but had similar stats as Minson.
Would like to see him take a few marks.
He's been OK the past couple of months, and has provided a big body.
Ruckmen typically take years to develop.

Re: Longer has a long way to go.
Keep in mind that at the start of the he was going to alternate between being a second ruck for the Saints and first ruck for Sandi. He's been forced to take on a role that he's not ready for. He'll possibly benefit from the experience in the future but we have accept that he'll struggle at the moment against more experienced opposition.
Opinions are like arseholes, everybody's got one.

Yep but I dont have a clue what that even means. Doesnt stop him looking like he knows how to mark a footy.

What did Minson do today?
In Springfield, they're eating the dogs. The people that came in, they're eating the cats. They’re eating – they are eating the pets of the people that live there.
