I don't think Lenny would want to be portrayed as a martyr either.

These guys images are marketing tools in an entertainment industry, players that want to and can leverage their image while they are playing should do so, Lenny doesn't strike me as someone who has wanted to do this a great deal. He's still made millions of dollars playing football and has well and truly shown true value.

If he wanted a cut of this retirement merchandise I am sure he could have, but he's probably more interested in helping the club again which is in financial ruins.

Agree with all that but really the OP is a hypothetical. He isnt going to ask for money for a start. His contract may mean he gets a cut anyway, who knows. I suppose my real point is Rooy, and this isnt a knock on him, has been getting a money for this for nearly his whole career where as other players dont seem to. I hope Lenny has a portion built into his contract. I also hope the club make a huge amount of money on this. We need every cent we can get.
what do you mean exactly when you say Roo has been getting money for these types of things his whole career?

Generating extra money for the club.

The "x" factor - charismatic players (helps if there bloody good too) will generate more interest/sponsorship potential than less charismatic players. I'll go even further. Better looking players are more useful to a club from a sponsoship/promotions perpective. You only have to look at the club website to see that the 'pretty boys' are the ones modelling the merchandise, not Beau Maister (no offence Beau ;-) I thinksomeone said it before in this thread, a players contract negs must take into account a players overall value to a club and his agreed salary would be reflective of this. the 3 retiring amigos last year probably generated more interest/gate takings/everythign St Kilda for an otherwise dead rubber against a WAFL side, sure, less interest and revenue, but still along the same lines...Like probably everyone on this website, I love Lenny and will be pretty down in the dumps when the reality sinks in that he wont be lining up for us anymore :-(

I reckon Mr Magic nailed it. Lenny is probably already entitled to money from this weeks game like a lot of players would be because of contractual agreements. Silly discussion.

Damn that must have been a good holiday. I find myself agreeing with Cairnsman for once!! Not on his turn of phrase mind you, but that profits could not be 'shared' with Lenny purely for salary cap reasons. He has a contract and it has been agreed and designated into the salary cap. Same reason they don't have 'testimonial dinners' like they used to. Salary cap. It's all football generated income. Maybe Lenny will get a high paying assistant coaching job post career as his testimonial?

EDIT: And that would be fully deserved, by the way. I think Lenny would make an excellent coach.

Players are entitled to a percentage of the product sold that uses their image. Memorabilia , t-shirts , football cards etc. I don't think it would be a large amount but lenny will receive something.
