Or gives us some bargaining power to trade instead of relying on compensation.

Would still like to see what we could get from them if the Cats are really interested. Be nice to prize Murdoch away from them to come play with his brother. Straight swap, take it and run.

Sorry dont get that. A club could get him for nothing but now they have to pay so he is staying.

He's a tough player to figure out Jarryn

His work rate and preparation are seemingly beyond question... I think he was the fittest player ino ur team from way back when he was on the rookie list.

Also very hard worker on the field, great at the 1%ers, tough, accountable, reasonable pace... maybe lost some attacking flair over the years.

It feels like he's pidgeon holed into a medium running back type of role... doing more shut down roles rather than quarter back ones. The thing is that over the years, his disposal seems to have gotten a bit worse too.

When I look at him in the team... I actually struggle to see where to play him.

The backline in a pinch

Gwilt, Delaney, Dempster
Savage, Fisher, Newnes

Add Bruce, Roberton, Acres, Gilbert, Wright as well as Geary

That's a lot of backs and I feel like I would play a few of them ahead of Gears... Ultimately, players in that type of role need to be able to be a quater back too and his disposal isn't up to it IMO

Where do poeple see him playing?

Indeed. Quarterbacks can hit deep targets well under pressure. That is not an ability that Geary posses. Look to players like Webster, Savage as our next-gen players who can kick well out of defence.

Geary is competing with Newnes as the small defender.

Geary is a hard worker and a great trainer...and will make the young kids work very hard to get passed him. They will have to work hard for his spot.

Newnes, Wright, Webster.......

Savages' boot last game will have the coaches salivating that he can do that regularly.

So there will be a lot of competition for the small defender roles in 2015.

I very much there was anything more than a manager's ruse to it.

Newnes has been talked about as a future mid so I imagine that they see him and Savage being small backs. Dempster and Gwilt have both lost their clean kicking under more pressure. We will be losing all of Fisher, Gwilt and Dempster in the next few seasons so guys like Geary will be the over lapping generation like Peckett and Thompson were in the early days of the Riewoldt generation.

So can we trade him please?

He is a terrible kick, not much of a mark either.

So he is an elite runner...but what does he really bring to the club?

Leadership?

Big Mac had leadership and he wasn't much chop either

2 years is an interesting length of contract for Geary IMO...he's in his prime physically and also from a lesdership perspective. This deal will leave him at around 29 yrs of age, about when players start losing a bit of there physical peak. I'm a bit surprised they didn't lock him away for 3 yrs, but i'm sure there's a reason for it.

Good to see this tied down. Two years sounds about right to me. Gears is a very handy player, but not a star. See how things go and give him another two if he plays well. Others will not be jumping at him at 29.

great news....seems to have been undervalued here...

"The courageous defender finished sixth in the Saints' best and fairest in 2012, and improved that effort last year, when he finished fourth, turning himself into a valuable run-with midfielder.

Geary is a member of St Kilda's leadership group, with his influence sorely missed during his injury lay-off.

Geary cannot play any of those players role.

They are medium to talls.

So players like Roberton and Bruce are their replacements. Gilbert will be around a bit yet, though they may use him more on the wing.

I guess I've answered it purely from the clubs best option (contract the player for his best potential years - if he's cooked, superseded by younger players after that 2 years, either ditch him or offer him less coin for his next contract)...the two things that struck me a bit odd were I would have thought Geary was in a position of slightly better bargaining given the list profile and his improvement trajectory, therefore he surely would have been keener on a longer deal 3-4 yrs even just at reasonable coin...lock him in as a one club man...I didn't think the club was in a super strong position to play hardball ala BJ (not implying Geary is as classy a player as BJ)...either he's a real loyal club man and did absolute best by the club, or there wasn't that much genuine interest from elsewhere ... I'm certainly happy he's staying, like him as a player, fit gutsy and will be a great depth player going forward!!

Fwiw as a player he isn't up there with my current favourites. However a 2 year deal sounds to me like this was very much the clubs opening and preferred position in the negotiations and he strikes me as being a bit of WYSIWYG kind of guy - and was happy to accept whatever the club deemed as fair and reasonable without any real negotiations . if that was the case then kudos to him and I hope he does enough to earn himself a contract extension when its up for renewal.

You make a good point. Two consecutive top six finishes in the B&F should tell us that his coaches like what he does. He's not the smoothest guy on the block but they can't all be Dal. Shaun Hart won three flags, Max Rooke won a couple, plenty of room for guys whose main attribute is that they give 110%.

With him in it.

I'm going to make a follow up statement: for us to compete again we need better quality players than Geary forcing him out of the team.

I'm happy with him re-signing. Well done to Gears.
