Saint wagga wrote:Dissapoiinting for Webster and you never like to see a player have an extended spell on the sideline. I guess one thing to come out of it has been his ability to get through 2/3 of the season and chalk up a decent games tally. Depending on the type of fracture, if it was traumatic, ie lisfranc injury, i'd be surprised if he could jog off the ground as he did, which could point ot more of a pre exsisting stress reaction turning into a stress fracture during the game...either way, it doesn't sound massively structural, and so shouldn't have long term consequences such as an ACL...so fingers crossed he does a bucket load of weights in the offseason and gets his upper body stronger, and then has a good long running pres season to attack next year well!

It also gives guys like Wright, Acres, Bruce, Murdoch more potential game time.
Thanks saint wagga, that gives some cause for optimism.

But oh my sainted aunt (pun dubious). Did we stand under a ladder/cross a black cat's path/smash a mirror/open an umbrella inside/step on a crack etc etc etc? I can't remember so many broken bones in one season. Ever.

Poor Jimmy, that's really crappy news.

I meant to mention in the Sandringham thread- it was good to see Nathan Wright back and running out the game last week

and Murdoch was servicable.

Acres is obviously available
and Sipposs and Spencer not as bad as expeected-

What is going on with the number of foot injuries this year I don't remember feet ever being a common problem for footballers in the past, half our team have been struck down this year. I know some have been labeled contact injuries but it is becoming a plauge at St Kilda. Is there some link to our training or the oval at Seaford or is it just pure bad luck. Time for a club podiatrist to be appointed

Don't think there's been that many that you'd call it a direct causal relationship to the type of training, but I'm sure it's possible that our young list and higher workload could be attributable to hickeys. Without knowing details of each injury and the mechanism, it's just speculation...even if it was workload related, it's probably not such a bad thing in the long run, as the guys who have held up (the majority) especially younger ones chalk up a big volume year and prove their body can cope with the rigours...build on it and go again next year...the analogy is the tree trunk getting through another year and laying down more wood, stronger the next year!!

The other thing is, once healed they don't have the residual issues of serious knee/ankle or shoulder injuries...of course, what we don't want to see is the same guys getting the same injury soon after, ala Gilbert...then it's a long slow recovery!

If geary misses 4 there is no way he should play the last game. That will be about 14 weeks out.

Agree. Virtually none of those should play.

Will be much better getting an extra game into the newbies, or one more game to help decide on the future of players like Shenton.......or either older players like Fisher.

Jack should play if available in 2 weeks. It would be unfair for him not to play. You are right on the others though.

Yup. Let's hold off on any more "too many ruckmen" threads for a mo'.

Agree if we wanted to get rid of one next season. That would be plainly stupid.

Yes, hopefully it's just growing pains. It will be a real shame if he can't get on the park consistently because the talent is there imo

Hickey is young, tall and lean...i'm not surprised he has struggled a bit with injury...as i've previously mentioned...if there was ever a season to be injury prone it was this one. The goal for him needs to be good pre seasons. Build his upper body strength and further slidify his core and training tolerance. If he's 25-26 and still missing lotsa lotsa games, then more of a concern but I still think he's got another 2 seasons before he's really got a mature ruck frame to completment his talents. The positive his Longer has rucked 2/3 or this season, got his games tally up quicker than expected, to the point where at the start of next season, there wont be a whole lot seperating the two with regards to games played...This gives us a good conundrum IMO...Don't get me wrong, i'm dissapointed he's not played much this year because I really like his work at stoppages and around the ground, think he can be an A grader...but if he really gets it all together and has some stability from his body, we are really going to want in the seaons to come when we are climbing the ladder with a more balanced list

Here's a piece from the Age on the Hickey injury.

I sincerely hope the black cat finds another club to wander past next year.

That's good news about Gilbo, Beno88.

Interesting to read that Tom Hickey said he'd had knee pain for most of the year...funny...thought he'd been out for most of the year...me thinks perhaps overcooked the rate of return from long layoff...probably did a lot of cycling (guarded weight bearing) in his early rehab phase...pure speculation, but there is a little ambiguity with the explanation...

Certainly explains why Luke was off his tucker on the weekend.
Was clearly pre-occupied and carrying that injury.

Just wondering if the shoulder has overtaken the knee as the worst injury across the AFL. I think the way they tackle nowadays where they tie up the hand and drive the shoulder into the turf is bloody tough. I really notice it a lot and while some lament the loss of the bump - the game certainly aint going soft with the way they tackle these days. I reckon the shoulder injuries overall in the AFL are way way up.

Look at the Ablett injury - but that kind of tackle and fall forward happens several times per game.
