Re: Jarryn Geary ... Cats target?
Geary is a tough small defender. Geelong have no decent lock down back pockets, small fwds have done very well against the cats so I'm not surprised they're after one..

Re: Jarryn Geary ... Cats target?
If he gets a heaps of possessions when involved in uncontested switches then his disposal efficiency will cloud what is fairly poor kicking when there is minute pressure on him as a ball-carrier.terry smith rules wrote:It never ceases to amaze me how Geary so polarises people. The haters remember the bad kicks etc and the lover recall the leadership, toughness and enthusiasm.
FYI his disposal efficiency this year is 71.4 (just under the AFL average but still better than many elite players) he averages 16.4 possessions and 2.7 tackles..
For mine he is absolutely a required player and if the club trades either him or Armitage I will be wanting words. We cannot afford to trade out players in the 100 game bracket
I see last week someone posting that we need a killer image, well step up 14 and 20, the roles they are made for. I believe Geary is exceptionally respected within the club and does not have to be captain to be an exceptional leader of our young team.
It is the same argument when some either crap on or defend CJ. Disposal efficiency however the issue of pressure brings out the worst in both players.

Armo is too loose at the hairdressers to be captain.FQF wrote:Armo will be our next captain, not Geary.

Re: Jarryn Geary ... Cats target?
I'm pretty sure I heard someone at the club say that we want to spend 100% of our cap. So I hope we're front-ending a lot of the young guys contracts.saintsRrising wrote:Moneywise, Geary is at a great time to renegotiate as the club will have spades of salary cap room, and will still need to pay 95%. Paying overs for Roo and back- ending the best young talent will only get you so far. So if he stays he may gain more than he is worth due the current circumstances. There are 2 more years before the Saints will most likely be looking to lure very talented players with FA deals.
I'm not sure how it works, but hopefully the large front-ended contracts will buy us some 'loyalty' when we have to tighten it up.

I'm hoping he resigns.
He is rated highly by the coach.
I'm more leaning towards him staying.
Aiming to return this year, even if its only 1-2 games.

I'll back The Pelican, he'll make the RIGHT decision for the club.
The rumour has to be true first, otherwise it's all Bunk.

How many defenders will The Saints pick in the 2024 draft ?

Re: Jarryn Geary ... Cats target?
He is our Nick Maxwell, and I've always been impressed by the way he carries himself. You can tell he has the respect of all his teammates as a leader. If not future captain, then 'spriritual' captain and leader, in the mould of Hayes and Burke in the years when they weren't actually captains.
"He probably won't be part of the next premiership side", true but he will play with and lead younger players who will go on to form that side. They have already learnt the skills, but they will learn the leadership and guts side from players like Gears.
"Pelican favours technicians" also true but a side needs balance and every team needs at least one Geary.
If we do let him go, I will understand but be disappointed and he will have a positive impact on whichever team he plays in. Frankly, as the last remnants of our 'golden genaration' retire, it will be left to players like Gears, Armo and Steven to lead the side and build the heart, guts and self-respect of the squad in the years before we rise again. The more leaders to take us through those hard years, the better.

Re: Jarryn Geary ... Cats target?
I think that Geary should be kept for the following reason. He was drafted during the Ross Lyon era which did not really develop younger players therefore was a bit player then we had SW who really was not exactly respected by the players so i'd suggest let Richo have a crack at trying to get him right. I know he's not all that skilled but for intensity and being competitive he's worth it.People talking about capataincy should just take a look at one "Danny Frawley" not the greatest footballer but gave the club everything he had. Hate to mention it but have a look at Collingwood with Maxwell, you could'nt say he was a great footballer but obviously turned out to be a respected captain by his peers.

If he left would we pick up anything? 3rd rounder at best? I hope he stays. Need hard trainers like him to push other players.

If the rumour is correct (and personally I think it is just his manger at work pumping up his tyres) it will be more tat Geary is walking rater than us pushing.
On his contract any FA compo pick would be bugger all.

I dont think he is qualified yet. He was elevated to the Senior List during 2007, but never made his debut to 2008. That is seven years ago.

I'd still be wondering who is manager is and if he has put the ' word' out there--
but latest AFL info would seem that he is safe for staying
