The lost years

Post: # 1478976Post SemperFidelis »

Another depressing summary of our 2008-2010 drafting epic fails. Pretty much a recycle of the Sheahan piece on the couch last week.

I guess after Sunday these were the articles we had to have.

Quote from article The Cats sat at the draft two months after that Grand Final armed with five picks in the top 56 selections. St Kilda had one - .
The above factual stat I think is one of the reasons St Kilda did not draft well in that year. They did not give their recruiters a chance. Also wasn't Mark Hutchings at the saints?

Well lets look at him then. He was delisted and wasnt picked up in the draft and spent all year at a WAFL club. He may have spent all year at Sandy and then would have been delisted anyway if he had stayed with us. Anyway the last thing we need is another slow inside mid. We need pace outside. Why do you think our contested ball is ok but our uncontested is disgusting?

Lets be fair 2009 & 2010 were compromised drafts
If the AFL had been honest enough to include all picks taken ahead of the draft our first draft pick would have been in the mid 20s and mid 30s in those years.

BUT these years were not compromised and the selections were near perfect.

Andrew McQualter (Gone)

Cain Ackland (Gone)

Mark McGough (Gone)

Aaron Fiora (Gone)

These years were NOT compromised drafts.

Face it 2000 and 2001 were excellent because we had numerous picks in the top 10 and 20 including 3 from No1 or No2.
2002 was another disaster except we had the pick No1 and stole Carlton's homework.
2003 was OK but then the rot really set in.
2007 was the only aberration to this rot.
We lucked in with Jack Steven at pick 42 and Ross Lyon grabbed Schneider and Dempster from Sydney for our pick 26

Between 2005 and 2010 inclusive there were people taking money from the club under false pretences.
They even make Julia Gillard seem half competent by comparison.

Lets not forget the "inspired" recruitment of Lovett! I didn't think Birrs was that bad a player personally.

We wasted pick 16 trading in Andrew Lovett and pick 48 trading in Brett Peake
We only ever had three picks in the top 56 and wasted that on Nick Winmar.

But what is not said is that due to a change in the age of eligibility only two thirds the normal number of players were available.
That effectively made our picks 24, 48 and 72.
Using a pick 72 on Peake was not that bad.
It was our desire to load up on indigenous pace in Lovett and Winmar that backfired.

Someone trusted James Hird.
Can't be too critical of that.
34 Essendon players trusted James Hird and were dumped in it by him too.

Mark Hutchings is a side issue.

The Big issue was the one where the Cats had 5 top 56 draft picks in 09 and we had only 1.
Utter disgrace.

If the Saints had half a brain we could have traded some over rated players from 09 10 and 11 for draft picks while their stocks and reputations were higher than their actual ability.

The reality was our top 10 in those years made the other 12 look much better than they were.
we could have got overs without losing anything.

Oh well. We are paying the piper for that folly now.

Did the cats trade overated players back then? Serious question and who would you have traded?

In 2009 and 2010 the answer is no one of our top 10 players. That's easy to answer, even with hindsight.

The BIG question is 2011. That's when we stuffed up. Lyon thought we could compete for a flag still before the season began. Probably shouldve traded out a couple at the end of 2010 and began the rebuild a year earlier than we did.

Had we done that, we'd still be bottom 4 this season, but with 2 or 3 extra top draft pick players in our team.

SP lets be honest here. We had just come off a drawn GF. Most on here thought we could do it again. I actually said there is no way and was shot down. There is no way we were going to trade after a losing GF. Who would you have traded and remember back to then, not in hindsight. That is far to easy.

Its easy to answer.
you guys simply wont accept any fault from the club no matter how obvious.
'Bevo' is not a club legend and the worlds best bloke.
he was well past it and out of his league and s*** at his job.
we were under resourced and our draft strike rate was a dead set disgrace.
how did geelong end up with 5 top 50 picks if they didnt trade? Did god slip them 3 extras?
Also hard for me say who id trade because that entirely depends on what was offered.
Its not just bad luck we are on the bottom. Its is s*** management.
you cant pretend otherwise. If people want the glory for success surely they are also accountable for failure?
Everyone in a mgt position at the club from 08 to 2011 should be held accountable for where we are today.
and its not hindsight. Many warned of this years ago.

ffs.

Con why didnt you answer the two simple questions I asked instead of going on some rant that was obvious for everyone to see. by the way just for your info the worst years were when Peake was in charge. Yes geelong did trade Con. They traded Mumford and kept Blake. Probably cost themselves another premiership. And your last 2 lines proves how silly your first comment was. As you said you have no idea what was offerred for our players. And how do you know anything about Bevo. You really do make up a lot Con but dont say much of any substance.

Don't forget that Geelong had about 5 "cheap" draft picks under the father-son rule (before they changed it about 2 years ago). That got them some gun players and left their early/fisrt round picks to get the best available.

I really think that gave them a huge advantage.

Ur a fool. U bought up hindsight trading. Same goes for you.
a trade has two sides to it. But logic tells we had players with higher than actual currency at that stage.

And as I said bevo and that ******** peake were a disgrace for those 4-6 years.
I dont care if u think 'bevo' is ur 'mate'. Hes s*** at his job. Its a fact.

Forget geelong. We are bottom with a percentage of 50 right now.

U can compare us to every single club in the comp and our recruting from 08 to 11 is easily the worst.

Lyon aside, everyone at the club at that time and all those involved in recruitment were dismal failures and should be held accountable for their disgraceful performance.

Im pretty sure we all know that. You were the one that mentioned geelong and then said if the saints had half a brain they would have traded players in that period. You said both Con and now you are changing your arguement to say what everyone knows.
