Rubbish. I take you are pretty young. making the 8 or very close to it is a successful side. We were always a chance for the finals for 8 years in a row. That should have got more people on board.

Pelchen has produced a plan to develop our list, however I'm not sure success of that plan lies squarely in his corner.

We have a recruiting department now - don't we?

I've never seen a bad St.Kilda player - that's just how they are.

No I'm not young. We didn't even make the finals one of those years. And the coach was sacked another year.

Yep and so. We had 8 good years. Longest period in 140 years.

Pelican has stated we are in for some short term pain. I suspect we are travelling as expected.

And you wonder why we don't have 40k members. We are currently the worst team in the league sharing a supporter base with 9 other clubs.

SaintRrising said in part :
We need more I agree, a lot more..but to say not any "likely" is an overkill.
Yes, I see some "good" potential, but not any potential "stars," which we need to take us back near the top.

We haven't had father son advantages like Geelong so those comparisons are irrelevant.
If we had Hawkins, Scarlett and Ablett , maybe we could have won a couple.
Makes me pewk really. The rules will probably change when Roo has his boy quad birth.

We can start to judge Pelchen and Elshaug in 2016, when the current group of youngsters are a bit more mature.

A wise man. Well said.

Billings - big tick
Dunstan - big tick
Acres - tick
Savage - tick
Delany - tick
Longer - tick
Bruce- tick
Templeton - tick
Weller- tick

that is a pretty significant haul in one year of drafting and I am happy to back Pelcan in.

Be patient - we haven't hit bottom yet and reality is we need 2-3 good years at draft table before we amass a new core to rise

We did have 8 years of being very competitive to unbeatable for a year (almost.... 09) that don't last forever

I think like many have said we don't see the match winners yet but they will shine (give Acres and co time) and we'll bring more in. What I hope (and think he will) Pelican does is ensure we get a far greater even spread of skill level across the group.... that takes time but I hope in 2 years time Farren Ray etc are in reserves and a new group of improved skilled players emerges.
Could not believe the amount of times today that basic passes to a Riewoldt lead went 2m over his head. Amazed

Keep turning them over Chris

By the way put a fork in Gwilt he's cooked.

Agreed. Rome certainly wasn't built in a day and nor will St Kilda's rebuild.

We just don't have that big a supporter base. We are competing with 9 other Victorian teams.

I agree now its impossible. My point really was how the hell didnt we get to 40k back then. Should have been nudging 50 and we could be 40 now.
The success gets you members in 15 years not straight away. My kids footy club is about 10 out of 24 saints. Fairly good amount in other year levels too. My hawks mates all jumped from their family teams in the 1980s. I think our risk is the drop off from our low period.

Whats Melbournes reason? Myth. You get the kids straight away. And dont you live around the south east suburbs. Alwways been a Saints area. At my school you followed the Saints or hated them because most people followed the saints.

Pelchen is the head of football. Not the head of recruiting (Elshaug) or list management (Bains).

I think you will find at nearly all clubs, the head of football/head of football department/coaching director sits in the coaches box. He would not have input into match ups etc.

Pelchen has developed our overall list strategy and football department strategy. Basically what it recognises is that:
- Our drafting/trading between 2006 and 2010 was abysmal, clearly the worst in the comp
- We have a huge hole in age/experience of players in their "finals prime" (23-28 years old)
- We need a critical mass of players in their "finals prime" to be in the top 4 and challenge for a flag
- We need to replenish our stock of talented youth as fast as possible, and this requires more than our "natural" draft picks (i.e. one from each round each year)
- We need to add some players who will be in their "finals prime" during our transition period between 2013-2017

Essentially he can't be judged on the success of this strategy until 2017 IMO.

Look @ the Bulldogs. They have followed the same strategy but started 2 years ahead of us...

Can anyone explain in simple terms the roles of Pelchen, Elshau and Bains? What each has to do with our recruiting?
