Indeed, he just needs to keep learning the game at present.saintspremiers wrote:That's excellent for him. Maybe, just maybe, he could play a game or few next season.saintsRrising wrote:10 disposals today...so getting more possessions....
Give the boy time. I wouldn't play him this season unless we get Longer and Stanley both injured at the same time and Hickey is still out.

Don't forget that Pierce is also tracking along very nicely post injury. Hard to see how the future will pan out in the ruck department.

Re: Holmes.
With Holmes too the other BIG point to remember that he is still being transformed into the endurance athlete that AFL requires.
Once he gets a bigger tank, he will get into useful spots more often and that should see his possession count rise.

Where will he play this weekend with Pierce and Hickey now back. Send him forward.

So he never touches it? lets face it the chances of playing for the Saints are nearly zero unles one or two of our ruckmen can learn to play as a KPP.

Re: Holmes.
They should take the opportunity to play him as a KPD or forward. He has freakish ability because of his athleticism and height. Watching him at training he looks ready to go. Tommy Walsh got played as a defender because you learn a lot watching a KPF running around. Imagine a 7' tall rover in the forward line.
This guy was freaking out that three of his kicks at training didn't go where he wanted and was beating himself up and saying he was going to go and kick a heap of kicks to improve. He is really focussed on improvement and I think on attitude alone he should make it as a player.

Re: Holmes.
I agree. I know it's only Pluggs' pet hate (ie; a highlights tape) but the fact that he was diving into packs, rather than his previous just spectating and waiting for the next ball up, is huge IMHO...lewdogs wrote:Really promising signs from that video footage. Looks like he can really tackle too.
And certainly his attitude sounds like it can't be faulted... someone who is not willing to 'die wondering'.

Re: Holmes.
Was good but shouldn't have been named amongst the best. Hickey was the dominant ruckman. Schneider also was BOG but not named.... But they've done it before and probably what they doing now, naming players in best to use as motivation and encouragementsaint6709 wrote:Named in the best for Sandy yesterday - it has been entertaining following his progress this year

Re: Holmes.
Am watching the game against Port.
Some very good signs that Holmes that he is starting to be a "footballer" in general play. Has red the ball well, positioned well and dished the ball of well. Good stuff.

Re: Holmes.
I really want this guy to succeed for the saints - so a question to those who get to see him live is he running out games yet?
On a side note and those that understand NFL will appreciate
I reckon the saints should start scouting & grooming a class running back & wide receiver
My plan goes like this
After an opposition point the running back brings the ball in from the square and takes off - runs 30-40mt busting through tackles, the only skill he has to manage is bouncing the ball and a short hand pass - to one of our "highly" skilled draftee kids
the kid whacks the ball 30-40mt into the path of our new speedy...
Wide receiver - who either marks or sprints into the open forward 50mt - the only skill he has to master is mark(already skilled at that) bounce & dinky little 20mt kick to our ...
Monster forwards in the goalsquare
Then back to the center bounce where Holmes feeds our "highly" skilled draftee mids all day.
it will be too easy

Seriously, have a look at the shots posted by Dave (the other other Dave) on the Sandy game thread. Worth the effort if you've not seen Holmes play yet.
