Which of those guys were early picks who developed at one club for years? Hawkins, Franklin, Roughead. That's about it. There's a lot of late picks there.

But also a lot who changed clubs. Gunston, Franklin, Reid (maybe), Podsiadly, Dawes, L Brown, Mooney, N Ablett, Q Lynch, Hansen, Hall... Looks like there's no need to use an early pick on a tall forward and develop them for five years, you can just pick them up down the line.

And that's even more the case with free agency.

Mids, mids and more mids. If we've got a quality midfield then finding a tall forward who can get on the end of a few is going to be the least of our worries. If we haven't got a quality midfield then we just won't win, regardless of our talls.

It's a shame that henney is zoned to Sydney. ( it's bulldust that they get looked after so much). He could be the best mid in the draft.

Who will take the punt on Caleb Daniel 1st

Played very very well against Vic Metro/Vic Country in 2 most recent outings

Is very small........but hardly made a mistake in games I watched......decision/disposal very good and finds it often.

Be interested in comments from any others who watched the games on foxtel.

What pick do others think he may go?

Having watched all of the games for under 18's at the national championships I am of the view that McCartin is slightly underdone at the moment as well as being somewhat too small to be key forward. I believe that our best choice would be to draft a midfield which to build around as we have already begun ie: Dunstan, Armo, Steven and possibly Acres and/or Billings. I believe that it is essential we gain a core midfield group, which is what all great teams are known for, think Geelong when they had Ablett, Bartel, Chapman, Stevie j and gold coast with their building midfield are able to supply forwards who are still maturing with great delivery.

I Think it is therefore essential we draft players like Petracca: whom is a former basketballer, is ranked in the top 1% for agility and is known for his toughness, willingness to work and compete with aggression, much like Dunstan he is ready for AFL with his body shape and I believe he provides both inside and outside run as well as good disposal. Secondly I believe that other players which we should be viewing with our later picks include Peter Bampton: Norwood boy from SA have seen him play in person, he has a willingness to work as well as the body which is ready for AFL, had he not been injured before the national carnival he would have been in the leadership group. Another one is the Vic country boy Webb, very nice skill set and smooth mover with a beautiful kick. I believe that Bampton and Webb will be in that 20-30 range. Out of the 30 range I believe the likes of Caleb Daniel, elite fitness, skills, speed and aggression as well as a guy Bradley Walsh whom is another midfielder also great leadership qualities having been the Western Australian captain, I believe he would be a great pick up with a later pick. The last player is Jake Johansen hasn't received much credit due to his size of which is slightly small although having played against him, he is like lightning,skillful and hard to stop.I believe would give some great zip on the outside, and don not believe he should be overlooked due to size, also another leader (SA capt.) I believe these players will fall in that even bracket ranging from around 30-50.

This obviously leaves us with no key forwards although of the above Petracca, Daniel and Webb have all scored multiple goals in games throughout the national carnival. I think this would be the best use of our picks. If they remain as is.

Thanks Die Hard 7, good thoughts. I completely agree on mids first, especially if McCartin isn't a superstar. Hopefully a bit to happen with our draft picks from here though - would love to end up with three picks inside 21.

ball magnet, who provides lots of run and spread. An old fashioned midfielder who runs the lines. Good skills and decision maker. Some clubs will rule a line through him purely because he is under 170cm. Has played senior SANFL. Ditto for the captain Jake Johansen who is slightly taller at 172 ish.

My guess Daniel will go as early as 3rd round or as late as rookie draft. If i had to punt I'd say 4th round. If he is still there in the 4th round I hope we punt on him because we can use guys who can find the ball and use it well.

I will comment but I have no idea at all who the Teddys are. Lets guess its Brisbane or the Lions as they are known by 99.9% of the population. Firstly the game has changed so much since they played. Its all about big sized mids now. Some are close to the height of KPP. I cant go on with anymore comments because I really have no idea who these clubs are. Dave just a little tip that maybe completely wrong. I reckon people would rather see real names for teams especially as it isnt even slightly funny IMO of course.

Now Pluggs, we all know that you clearly do know which teams are being referred to.

The terms I use are not an attempt at humour (though I did laugh when I first read them on here), but an expression of loathing for non-Saints teams, especially the artificially inseminated interstate entities.

I do agree with you re the importance of mid-fielders, and these days, powerful midfielders. The latter is why I didn't want Hartung, and wouldn't pick some of the very talented, but too small blokes whose names have been mentioned.

But I would add to the mid-fielders, the need for key position players. Look at what sunk us last season... the lack of big defenders to stop opposition power forwards kicking a bag against us... every time.

Look at what is killing us this year... only the one viable marking forward... sooooo predictable. Now if we had a dominant mid-field, and two or three marking options for them to kick to in our forward line...

PADDY McCartin has firmed as St Kilda’s Nick Riewoldt replacement with the power forward in the frame to land at Seaford as this year’s No. 1 draft pick.

Rival clubs believe the bottom-placed Saints — who tried to prise Tom Boyd from GWS last year — are certain to choose a goalkicker with their first selection and McCartin leads an open pack for the prized billing.

Like Riewoldt, the Geelong Falcon stands 193cm and 95kg and booted 2.3 from five marks as Vic Country fell to Western Australia at Etihad Stadium.

I'm VERY unconvinced McCartin is anywhere near as good as J Cameron, Boyd, Tom Lynch or John Patton.

Id also be interested to know what we offered for pick 1 last year....?
