Hear me out hypothetical Riewoldt trade
Ok, so I'll stat by saying I'm against trading Riewoldt, absolutely need his leadership and experience whilst we are transitioning our list.
BUT I've been thinking what we would actually get for him at the trade table and more importantly - how much footy he's actually got left in him?
What if he's only got ONE MORE SEASON left in him? It is rare that a key forward is still playing the game in their mid 30's.. If we knew he'd only be physically able to play one more season - would we be comfortable in trading him?
Riewoldt was recruited from Southport and Im pretty sure he still has family there.
Gold Coast are killing it at the moment and will only improve.
Gold Coast also happen to have 2 first round picks in the upcoming draft.
Imagine what Roo would do for Gold Coast's forward line next season?
Would it be a fair trade Riewoldt to GC for say picks 10 and 16, given he is 32 at the end of the season?
I think throwing in a GC player on top would be too much to ask for a 32yo key forward..
Unfortunately I dont think the trade would happen as we are taking a fairly measured and conservative recruiting approach at the moment, but its a great hypothetical. BUT if we did decide to trade him and Gold Coast accepted, it would MAKE OR BREAK our next flag tilt. Would be a fair draft coming up with 1, 10, 16, 21, 39. Practically 4 inside 20 and 5 inside 40.
Don't forget, the Pelican did warn us about some unpopular trade/list decisions coming up!
Just a thought! :)

Re: Hear me out hypothetical Riewoldt trade
I dont discount that 'loyalty'..but that 'loyalty' as you call it has cost the saints the best part of $1m pa. Rightly so b/c he's a legend, but if we decided to discount his pay check a bit earlier than expected, I think you might have found that loyalty diminishing.. after all it is his livelihood and career's are limited.saintbrat wrote:pity some supporters aren't as loyal as Nick is....
Anyhow, suppose you didnt read the thread title and the HYPOTHETICAL part..

Would you give up two first round draft picks for a 32 year old with dodgy knees who was likely to play one more season?

Re: Hear me out hypothetical Riewoldt trade
An opposition team would be crazy to offload 2 first rounders on a guy who potentially has one season left, has intensive treatment every week on dodgy knees, and who's heart probably wasnt into moving on at this stage of his career.
The difference between Roo and Dal & Gooddard is, his value to us is much higher than it would be to other clubs, therefore getting any sort of trade completed would be difficult because we would ask for too much in return.

Re: Hear me out hypothetical Riewoldt trade
Gold Coastt have 3 gun tall forwards, Dixon, day, and Lynch. All of whom are currently great footy and have miles more upside than Roo. Why the hell would they give us 2 first round draft picks for a guy that has barely one good season left in him?

Sadly Rooy isnt worth anything now. certainly not 2 picks of that order. secondly I dont think he would have any interest in going back to the GC. Isnt all his immediate family now in melbourne. Thirdly we need him so we get to the 95% of the SC especially with lenny going at the end of the year.

Re: Hear me out hypothetical Riewoldt trade
Agree with Mad Dog Muir.
The time for trading Nick has now past.
If I was a hindsight hero you would have done it with the GC for Tom Lynch and Dion Prestia 3 years ago.
Lynch is from the MP and is going to be a superstar of the game.

Too late now - you should never trade Legends of the club. It destroys the backbone that holds things together in the tough times. It also destroys the history that Clubs rely on to build "team" ethos/focus over the years.

Was thinking the same. No way would we receive two picks inside 20 for A 32 year old with dodgy knee/skosifantutti wrote:Would you give up two first round draft picks for a 32 year old with dodgy knees who was likely to play one more season?

Re: Hear me out hypothetical Riewoldt trade
Nick isn't going anywhere. His chance came and went at the end of last year, when he decided not to go for an offer from Eddie. I'm pleased he passed on it. Knowing Collingwood, they would give us peanuts in exchange. Also it'll be fantastic to see a one club champion player finish their career with us, especially considering that we live in the age where big money has won over player loyalty.
Curb your enthusiasm - you’re a St.Kilda supporter!!

Spot on. He's much more than just another player. He's our fabric.Junction Oval wrote:Too late now - you should never trade Legends of the club. Re: Hear me out hypothetical Riewoldt trade
I thought his family moved to melb years ago, even started a business too I think.
GC wont want him unless they think with him they will the premiership next year.
Like Coll last year (who maybe got closer than we realise) only a team that thinks he is the difference between winning the cup or missing out.

Re: Hear me out hypothetical Riewoldt trade
Nick is worth more to the fabric of our club than to get a draft pick.
With that in mind, if GC was to offer up Lynch, pick 10 & 15 for pick 1 & Roo, I think I'd know what id do...

N.Riewoldt is the absolute heart and soul of the St.Kilda Football Club.
He's sticking around as long as he can to get up competitive again.
