Re: Recruit the best players, or recruit specific players??
[quote="Unforgiven"]I'm going to contradict myself here, but pick the best talent available, though smalls > talls. E.g. If the best 2 available players are a midfielder and a key back, pick the mid every day of the week.
We are playing in a new era, the introduction of free agency is the key tool in filling needs (e.g. We picked up Delaney, Hawks secured Brian Lake, both for a specific role in their respective teams).
At the draft, I'd like to see us generally just pick the best available talent, and hopefully the 3-4 kids we pick has at least a few mids and a tall between them.
8-)really hope that being the case
Then Petracca ( the best player by a mile in the competition) then either Webb Ellis Urban Ahern Wigg subject to who is available then pick up Orourke & Jaksch from Gws .
Then steal a key position player who has developed in system offer a big deal$$. The next year
No one will replace Nick Reiwoldt or J Brown from TAC in a season .

In our current situation, I would be "leaning" towards players in positions that we need. If there is a "stand-out" at pick 1, then clearly, take him.
I am not sure that we can take any player, based solely on "he can play," when we don't really need his position filled.

I get the feeling the pelican has plans to use that No. 1 pick in a creative way.
I started with nothing and I've got most of it left!

Best available player. Trade for special needs
Re: Recruit the best players, or recruit specific players??
If the best available player is Wright I'd say no. We do not need another ruck man.
Best available player other than a ruck.
Best available player other than a ruck.
I've never seen a bad St.Kilda player - that's just how they are.

Best available - trade later.
If a player is genuinely equal then go for needs but I guess that is a rare event.
I also believe if I was running the club I would have a recruitment panel from EACH STATE to get an objective decision/ranking/rating. I seriously and honestly believe recruiters are tainted/biased/compromised by their home state.
The fact is WA just beat Vic Country and SA just beat Vic Metro and won the champs two years running. History also shows that NSW and Tassie produce good players yet all the talk in the HS and on here is about only Vic players. Ill remind you all - the draft is NATIONAL as is the talent.
Here is the tip - Wright, Goddard, McCartin, Brayshaw and Petracca will NOT be top 5!!!!
Lets look at some facts:
O'mera- WA
Koladashnij - Tas
Riewoldt - Tassie/Qld
Hayes - NSW
Breust - NSW (rookie)
Frankilin - WA
Wingard - SA
Hill brothers - WA
Fyfe - WA
Walker - NSW
Vic Metro heroes like Kreuzer = GROSSLY over-rated by Herald Sun.
On the Vic side:
Pendles - Gippsland
Danger- Great Ocean Road
Cameron - Vic/SA Border

Lee was a Roo replacement. Fail! So we still need a FF/CHF. Free agency may be the best bet in 2016 for that.
Best available for picks inside 25.

There you go - taken from the Saints website :
Sometimes it's nice to be somewhere around the mark. This week Alan Richardson flagged the need for a tall forward in November’s draft following the 2013 selections of midfielders Jack Billings, Luke Dunstan and Blake Acres.
